    Here we are Florida!

    February 23, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Landed in Fort Lauderdale to a very busy and chaotic airport and a cluster *** at the car rental. But on our way to Miami Beach and looking forward to our Little Havana Food Tour later.

  • Sea plane down!

    February 23, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 75 °F

On our way to Little Havana, 4 or 5 fire trucks and 6 or 7 police and an ambulance came flying by. Turns out a sea plane had crashed. Hard to see in the photo.

  • Little Havana Food Tour

    February 23, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 72 °F

We’ve been to Little Havana before but chose to do a tour this time to get more history. Ariel was a great guide and wove the stories of Cuba, America, Little Havana, politics, and people and food together really well.

We had a mojito with agostino bitters on top that cut the sweetness, a Cubano sandwich, cuban coffee, an empanada that was really good, pastries and churros. We learned about the guayabera shirts, cigar rolling, dominoes, the roosters in the area and the loss of life at the bay of pigs. Great day.

  • Michael Symond Whisky and Steak

    February 23, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

Great SOBEWFF party with Michael Symond who was very engaging and fun. And thinner and shorter in person than I imagined. Lol.

We had some amazing bites of some very well cooked beef. It was more beef than we have eaten in a long time. The whisky scene was lacking but the rye we had was nice. The lines got too long to really wait for more.Read more

  • Grand Tasting Village

    February 24, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

This is our third time to SOBEWFF’s Grand Tasting Village. Still very much enjoyed it but there was way more alcohol and less food. Which isn’t so good on a hot day.

The national brands aren’t so present anymore and a lot of the food is just Miami restaurants…which is great if you love here.

The cooking demos are always great and it’s fun to see our food network hero’s. Enjoyed Jeff Mauro, Jet Tila, Guy and Hunter Fieri, were fun and we cruised by some others. Met Jet and got his Thai cookbook.

  • Lincoln Road

    February 25, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

The Lincoln Road area is a lovely pedestrian mall with mostly higher end shopping, but also a lot of closed and re-modeling shops. The center is full of restaurants and beautiful foliage. We went for the Farmers Market.... there were a few fruit stands, but not really a farmers market. Lots of other vendors and slightly flea-market like stuff, but still nice.

We had a little brunch/lunch of amazing pizza - one slice of truffle and one slice of sopresta which we shared. Light, fluffy crusts and amazing toppings. We shared a pistachio canoli which was lovely.

It was just a nice area to walk around, people watch and be outside. The poem on the wall about watching people was appreciated.

  • Wynwood district

    February 25, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

What a find! This is an artsy, funky, quirky neighborhood with art everywhere and a whole museum dedicated to street art.

The Wynwood Walls is a museum/garden. There were indoor and outdoor installations. The artist with the simple stick figures in bronze was a favorite - very simple figures, very pointed messages.

The outside murals were fun and colorful. Curious how often they change it out... if you lived near by, I could imagine having an annual pass and coming often to admire and be inspired.

Outside of the museum, there is still art everywhere. The area has a funky, edgy, slightly grimy area, but also just real. Some art that might offend some people.... those aren't our people. LOL.

There is also a huge food truck court - Smorgasbord Miami - that had such a great vibe. So many different types of food - there must have been 25 stalls. There was a big area with dozens of picnic tables. We weren't hungry or we would have indulged.

The sad part about the area was seeing the signs of gentrification... the new mixed use buildings going up... and fearing all of that uniqueness being lost.

  • Cerveceria La Tropical

    February 25, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Our second brewery was a little nicer and had a long history tied to Cuba. The original was started by the family in 1888 in Havana. A long history in Cuba before closing in 1960 and the family exiling in Miami. In 2016, they partnered for a pop up and in 2021 they were re-established and re-opened in the US.

It is a beautiful garden and they have a partnership with a non-profit for education on tropical plants. Bill had beer. Dawn had plants. Life was great!
