  • The Murals of Derry

    August 13, 2023 in Northern Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

A memorial for a bloody history, bloody not only on that famous Bloody Sunday. A very recent history. We all know probably someone personally who was affected by The Troubles.
A bitter sweet walk along the houses with the murals, all masterly painted and every one of them with a deep symbolic meaning.Read more

  • Hands across the divide

    August 13, 2023 in Northern Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This bronze sculpture of two men reaching out to each other symbolises the spirit of reconciliation and hope. The sculpture was unveiled in 1992, 20 years after Bloody Sunday.

The two men represent the two communities (unionist and republican), with outstretched hands across a deep dividing trench. Some Irish journalist wrote that the sad feature of the sculpture is that they are not in fact holding hands but rather, just almost touching. It is said that once local people are happy that the “troubles” are fully over the sculpture can be rearranged so that the hands finally touch.Read more

  • Last NI charge

    August 15, 2023 in Northern Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

In Derry we try to get as much E-Juice as possible before driving into the Wild West of Donegal with hardly any charging points.
Although... The next weeks will be even harder, less and less civilisation...
Interesting: this is a former petrol station, now only used for EV charging, cash machine, and washing. It's the future of the majority of petrol stations I suppose.

  • The Last Jedi

    August 15, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Star Wars Fans will recognise this scenery: our first Ireland stop was one of the film locations of the episode The Last Jedi.
It's Malin Head, the most Northerly point of mainland Ireland.
The breathtaking cliffs and views made it easy to understand why this was scouted for the film.Read more

  • Tidal Fortress

    August 16, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Doe Castle is a waterside citadel with a lot of history, located in Sheephaven Bay.
It was the medieval stronghold of the MacSweeneys and was built in the 1420s.
But it seems to be not as safe as it should be - during low tide as seen on the photos it can be easily accessed?!?Read more

  • Access made easy (ier)

    August 16, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Once it was quite a slippery and steep hike down. Now still steep, but a well made path and a huge tourist car park made the once hidden gem a tourist attraction.
But still relatively quiet and very impressive!Read more

  • The Irish Taj Mahal

    August 17, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

The stunning ruin of the Old Church of Dunlewey is a lasting memorial to a great love affair between James Russell, the landlord of the Dunlewey estate, and his wife Jane, just like the Taj Mahal.

James Russell married Jane Smith in 1825 and they set up married life in London.
Using the wealth they had acquired in London, the couple decided to leave England and purchase the Dunlewey estate.
James died in 1848. Heartbroken, his widow decided to build the church as a monument for her husband.
Like the Taj Mahal, the building was constructed using white marble and also blue quartzite which was quarried locally.

The Church of the Sacred Heart in Dunlewey is aperfectly situated building. It was built in 1877 on top of a small hill on the shore of Dunlewey Lough. Nestled so close to the foot of 'Errigal Mountain' that it could almost hide in its shadow.

  • A celebrity wreck

    August 18, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

This shipwreck is known locally as Bád Eddie, Bád meaning boat in Irish, so once it was Eddie's boat.
She was a fishing boat and she was originally built in Brittany, France, and bought by local fisherman Eddie Gillespie. In 1977 she needed two planks repaired and she was towed ashore onto Magherclougher beach and somehow got left. The repairs were never done and she is there for almost 50 years.
And she became a celebrity! She was featured in a U2 video, has her own twitter account and is very much loved by both tourists and locals.
    A star, a landmark, a legend.

  • Storm Betty and the mountain

    August 19, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Mount Errigal photographed while storm Betty was in Ireland.
The weather and view changed every 30 seconds. The mountain was only visible for a short time, sometimes only 10 seconds or less. Then the clouds or a heavy downpour hid it again.
After taking the photos we were drenched.

  • A school with no pupils

    August 20, 2023 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

The Gleniff Horseshoe is a 6 miles looped drive in a valley of mountains in the county of Sligo.
It's a more than fascinating place with high mountains leaning towards you from each side.
In the centre one can find an old, now ruined schoolhouse. But for which students, please?!? There isn't and there wasn't any settlement close by for many miles?!?Read more
