    Borda. Top of the mountian

    May 13 in France ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

I felt like we slept on top of the world. Looking out we could see nothing but Gods provision.

We had a great meal and slept in a room with 9 other strangers that became family. We laughed. We cried. Then the sun (son) rose and it was like a play unfolding in front of our eyes.

Our little sleeping cubbies we great but we missed our big bed from home

    Camino D2 Huntto

    May 4 in France ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Lazy start, as we "only" have 5km to walk to the hotel, today. Decided to leave in the AM, to get to the destination, look around, but also due a risk of rain later in the day. Total walk time about 1 hour up a steep incline around 400m of elevation. Amazing, amazing views, for which the pics really do not do justice. Rain duly arrived, absolutely biblical, with thunder n lightening see vids. Thank goodness we were not walking further today 🙏⚡😱🍀🍀🍀. We had an evening with our 1st (and last) Pilgrims dinner with 26 persons in total. Many different countries and languages all trying to understand eachother!! Great company with laughs but the food was very very disappointing, seems thier was not alot of love put into our dinner😒🍲 a la Fawlty Towers 😂😂.Read more

    Camino Day 1

    May 1 in France ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Today we headed to the Pilgrims office to get our pilgrim credentials and shell, then we set off on our journey from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Orisson, only 7.8km and 650m in elevation. When everyone discusses the horrors of the Camino they say how hard the first 2 days are but today was fantastic, laughing with other pilgrims, making jokes and memories. So many aussies! P.S. apparently I don’t hate red wine so apologies in advance for any spelling mistakesRead more

    SJPDP - Orison/Borda 8 km

    April 21 in France ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Walked 8 km with 8.5 kg weight to 864m. It took about 2.5 hrs only. Really not as bad as it was promoted to be. I was told tmr would be worse. Today Ii was light rain and damp in the morning. But as we reached to Orison the sun came out at 2 pm. It’s beautiful. Feeling great.

In the past days there was storm, snow and rain. It was intimidating abut My intuition told me to go up today. It was great. While tmr there is a 99% rain while we climb the steepest hill to the peak and descend through muddy road. 19 km

Whatever the result is. It is what it should be.

    About simplicity,
we constantly reexamine what can we take out to reduce the weight. We tend to carry a lot of stuff for just in case. Extra something because we are scared and worried. Once you go on the journey, then you realize what you need is really little and adjust along the way. Don’t we tend to worry too much and over stocking ? I do, I am making a list of things I want to remove from my Toronto place.

    Sense of Urgency,
at work or in life we are given artificial timelines to go and do something. And over time we didn’t even know we are rushing for no reason. honestly, today I could have push more and I feel a bit of regret because It could be a great day to move 25Km in a good weather. But what’s the rush? Would I enjoy this journey as I am taking time for myself now? if I am stressed about reaching the destination and carry my gears? And I would have missed this cute Arbuerge Borda. I am giving myself permission to connect with myself and my intuition and I deserve all the time I need.

    Something worth paying.
my family thinks I tend to live frugal. Ahahaha well this time I think at I get the most fancy place on this mountain. Having all the nonessential furnitures in a private room and a shower with hot water are something. I had to book it because it was my last option. But hey! All worth it! Turns out I also found another roomate ( Israeli girl) to share this small luxury with me. It’s heated at night with cozy siting place next to a fireplace what more can I ask for?

    Borda to Burguete

    April 14 in France ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

    Fighting the elements

We woke up this morning to an amazing view and a wonderful breakfast.
But once we started climbing across the Pyrenees, the challenge began.
We had to ascend around 800 meters and travel 19.7 km to Burguete. The elevation may not seem that much until you actually have to do it with a backpack and strong winds that threatened to throw us off the path several times.
The sun was shining and the views were surreal, as were portions of the trail. But the wind kept blowing against our faces making it harder and harder.
We found company along the way and the conversation gave us the strength to push forward.
The descend was hard on our legs and knees, but arriving at Ronsesvalles Monastery we found respite in a cup of tea and a snack.
The terrain was flat all the way to Burguete, but we faced a thunderstorm and rain, heavy at times.
At the end of the day, would not trade the challenge for anything.

St. Michel, France ... to Auberge Borda

    April 5 in France ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Day one on the Camino was filled with wonderful moments, redefining leg/glute day, and increased heart rates! 😝 I met some amazing people along the road, the first of which informed me that was going the wrong way! Lol... so had they, and I'm thankful that I had not gone nearly as far as they had! Once on the right path, the crisp fresh air, the incredible beauty, and the tranquility of it all quickly filled my senses with a feeling of calm that I couldn't explain. My first day on the Camino ended at Auberge Borda in St. Michel, France. A few of the pilgrims I had met on the walk during the day were also staying there. Our host, Miguel, made us a wonderful pilgrim meal for supper, and we sat together, sharing where we came from and why we were there. There was a heartwarming sense of commaraderie and so many laugh out loud moments... especially when I revealed that for the first time in my life, I was living without adult supervision and wondered what could possibly go wrong!! 😂 I met people from the Netherlands, Australia, Korea, Japan, Great Britain, and many other parts of the USA. The walk during the day was nothing short of amazing...albeit physically demanding! 😬 At the end of the day, we were rewarded with a most spectacular sunset... 😍Read more

    St Jean to Borda

    August 15, 2024 in France ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Today was no joke, straight up the mountain right out of St Jean. Not a long day only 5.5 miles but we had 2400 ft in elevation gain, definitely a huff and puffer for me.

Made it to Orrison for lunch and a beer, then only 1 more km to Bordo. Met folks from Maine, Indiana, Wisconsin and Yorkshire, UK, along the way. The alburgue here in Borda is nice and clean.

Mikael is our hospitalero and has been great. We'll have a communal meal with everyone staying here tonight, then get ready for a longer walk tomorrow.

    SJPP to Orisson

    August 11, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    A short and easy 8kms… or that’s what I thought they’d be!!

Started out the day with a gorgeous French petit dejeuner of croissant, bread, jam, juice and coffee, hitting the trail around 9am.

Those 8kms were the steepest and hottest I’ve ever done, and was only possible by skipping from one patch of shade to the next, for a quick rest! We climbed just shy of 700 metres to Refuge Orisson and were met by such friendly and hardworking staff, serving gorgeous food on the most breathtaking patio overlooking the peaks and valleys of the Pyrenees mountains. Gorgeous!

A community dinner with the rest of the folks staying at the hostel where we ate, introduced ourselves and shared our Camino ‘why’.

    Borda Albergue

    July 10, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

From St. Jean Pied de port, I took a break at Orisson to eat. It was a very hot and sunny day. I felt like I was getting heat exhaustion. I arrived at the Borda Hostel after I took a wrong path which added an extra 2 hours. They were completely booked, but Lorenzo accommodated me as did the other pilgrims. They made room for me. The view was beautiful. In the evening, we had a wonderful dinner together after everyone introduced themselves.Read more

    SURPRISE!

    July 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Had a bit of a surprise in store for Mum today… most people knew already, but we somehow managed to keep it a secret that it wouldn’t just be 2 of us walking, but 3! (Thanks to those who have known for so long and not let the cat out of the bag) Today Jess arrived in St Jean Pied de Port much to mums surprise and delight, lots of grins and laughter as we explained the planning that went into keeping this little secret. Our Camino starts tomorrow and we all can’t wait.Read more
