    Cassis

    Eigentlich war unser Plan heute Marseille zu erkunden. Leider haben wir einfach keinen passenden Parkplatz in der Umgebung gefunden und als die Straßen immer enger wurden, haben wir den Entschluss gefasst wieder umzudrehen. Voll ärgerlich, weil wir mit Absicht schon nicht im Zentrum geguckt haben, sondern so, dass wir mit den Öffis in die City fahren können, aber gut. Sind dann weiter gefahren in eine kleine Stadt namens Cassis. Dort haben wir jetzt einen Stellplatz für die nächsten Tage. Heute waren wir schon die Stadt erkunden und haben unsere Seele am Wasser baumeln lassen. Es sind einfach 24°C. Das ist echt schön, aber im Auto waren gerade als wir angekommen sind, 49° und das ist doch ganz schön fett.🤣Wir überlegen jetzt Marseille doch einfach auszulassen und hier alles ein bisschen entspannter anzugehen - wenig Auto, viel Meer und so🤭☀️ Pläne gibt es dementsprechend gerade keine mehr.     Tausende Schritte durch Marseille

    Noch einmal zog es uns zur Cathedrale de la Major. Diese beeindruckende Kathedrale auf dem Place de la Major erscheint auf den ersten Blick etwas verwirrend, denn sie hat eine eher italienische als eine französische Ausstrahlung. Das liegt vor allem an ihrer gestreiften Fassade aus grünem und beigem Kalkstein. Das Innere der Kirche ist riesig und beeindruckt mit viel Marmor und Mosaiken. Die Kathedrale stammt aus dem Jahr 1896. Doch an diesem Ort gab es schon seit dem 5. Jahrhundert Vorgänger-Kirchbauten. Die Kathedrale ist nach dem Petersdom in Rom die zweitgrößte in Europa und ihre Höhe beträgt an der Kuppel 60 Meter!

    Nach einem kurzen Break im Schatten der Cathedrale machten wir uns zurück auf den Weg zur Innenstadt zwischen Börse & Oper und von da aus zum Hotel.

    Für das Abendessen sind wir ins Vallon des Auffes aufgebrochen und konnten unterwegs einen der Strände von Marseille sehen und beim Abendessen den Sonnenuntergang im Vallon des Auffes genießen.    Read more

    Day 53: Touring Marseille-Part 3

    Finished up the museum by walking through an exhibit on the Mediterranean. Nothing new but interesting how they mixed in modern pieces with Roman pieces.

    Last exhibit was called Herve de Rosa and it had so much color with what we enjoyed as a child mixed in with everyday things. Like the toys walking out of an old wardrobe and old bowling balls before bowling alleys.

    Next was the Cathedral of Saint Mary Major and known as the Marseille cathedral. On my way there there was a large Haribo Bear statue. The cathedral was beautiful with lots of mosaic tile. No altars along the side of the nave.

    Per history the cathedral was built on a large scale in the Byzantine and Roman Revival styles. The foundation stone was laid by Emperor Napoleon III in 1852. Per materials it is one of the largest cathedrals in France, covering a total of 7,680 square meters.

    After the cathedral I was wandering through old town and wandered into the La Vieille Charité which was a former charity house for the poor and now a museum. Inside the chapel was a special exhibit by Laura Provoste. The exhibit is the demonstrate the power of the Mediterranean. Yes it is a breast of the Mediterrean with fish feeding off it - both sensual and spiritual.

    Had a drink at the museum cafe in the courtyard and then headed back to hotel. The old town had lots of unique street art. Fun to check it out    Read more

    Cassis

    Gerade noch einen Platz auf dem kleinen Campingplatz von Cassis bekommen, gestern Abend die erste kleine Dorfbesichtigung gemacht, ein wunderschöner Ort, Partnerstadt von Portofino.
    Zitat: „Wer Paris gesehen hat und Cassis nicht, hat gar nichts gesehen“ - könnte was dran sein 😉
    Heute 14km Gewaltmarsch durch den Nationalpark Calanques mit 290 Höhenmetern, zur Belohnung gab’s eine Original Bouilliabaisse, seeeehr lecker und was ganz besonderes 😋    Read more

    Quinta vasca

    Marsiglia
    Parto per il tappone pirenaico del mio Tour de France, che mi programmavo da un po', onestamente. Mi porterà a Tolosa e Carcassonne, per poi scendere a mare a Narbona (dopotutto era la capitale della provincia imperiale) e Montpellier.
    Il viaggio ha un insolito prologo, un ritardo a Marsiglia per un motivo se non altro singolare: dei tizi volevano salire a bordo con dei biglietti del giorno prima! Chiesti soldi per dei nuovi biglietti da parte degli autisti (cash! ...non so quanto sia regolare), loro bloccano le porte, chiamano la polizia, intralciano la ripartenza...
    Motivo? Gli mancavano 20€! Ritardiamo 40 minuti per questa pantomima e alla fine, quando si fa una colletta per farli salire, uno di questi stronzi si scusa con tutti per il ritardo, "...ma la colpa non è nostra: si sa che gli italiani sono razzisti".
    Me lo guardo e gli dico: "quindi il problema sono gli italiani che sono razzisti, non tu che non avevi i soldi?"
    "Amico, lo dicevo ridendo".
    "Io te lo dico senza ridere. Siediti e non rompere più il cazzo, che hai dato spettacolo a sufficienza!".

    Spent our last morning in Spain roaming La Rumbla & the food market food. A place of absolute deliciousness! Everything is so fresh & inviting, the variety of seafood was outstanding!     Marseille, France

    Marseilles is France's 2nd largest city and deserves more than one day and night, but that's all the time we had for it, so we made the most of it.

    We checked into a cheap hotel in the historic center near the old port and hit the ground running. We walked all along the port, checked out the fish market, did some cafe culture, trying to stretch our coffees as long as a Frenchman. Impossible!

    Then we bought 24 hour transportation passes and took a bus up to the Basilica on the huge hill overlooking town. Great views. It also overlooks the Chateau d'If on a small island in the bay. It's the place where the count of Monte Cristo action takes place Alexander Dumas' book.

    Lunch was at a seafood restaurant near the harbor. We spent way too much time trying to find a place that wasn't too touristy yet had good seafood. We lucked out. The plot du jour was excellent. Unfortunately, you have to make a 3-day reservation if you want good Bouillabaisse, the local specialty.

    Then it was off to Le Panier, the "breadbasket" neighborhood on a large hill. It's narrow streets are fun to walk through. There's lots of graffiti and trendy shops and cafes up there now. Not long ago it was a very poor neighborhood.

    After a nap we took a subway two stops away and we were in a different world away from the port and tourists. Deanne found a nice seafood restaurant. Dinner was fresh oysters and langistinos with a bottle of wine.

    We had time in the morning for coffee at a cafe and a stroll in the sun. We're on a train right now heading west from Marseille towards the small town of Servian to see Delgres, a band we like. We've seen them at the Fete de Marquette in Madison a couple times and the Festival Internacional in Lafayette, Louisiana.

    Cassis - bezauberndes Städtchen

    Marseille - Tag 2 bei schönstem Wetter

    Der heutige Tag stand voll im Zeichen der Kirchen. Zuerst machten wir uns auf den Weg zur Notre Dame auf dem Hügel über Marseille.

    Wo auch immer man in Marseille herumläuft – Notre Dame de la Garde is watching you! Errichtet auf einem 162 Meter hohen Kalksteinfelsen scheint diese Basilika aus dem 19. Jh. regelrecht über die Stadt zu wachen. Die Einheimischen nennen die Kirche liebevoll „la bonne mère“ (die gute Mutter). Es versteht sich fast von selbst, dass man von dort oben eine fantastische Aussicht über die Stadt und das Meer hat. Auf der Spitze des 60 Meter hohen Kirchturms thront eine riesige Skulptur der heiligen Maria. Das Innere von Notre Dame ist noch prunkvoller als schon in der Cathedrale.

    Der Abstieg ging schneller und wir belohnten uns mit einem kleinen Lunch im Restaurant La Caravelle im ersten Stock des Hotel Belle-Vue....Sehr urig & lecker.    Read more

    Marseille - Hippe Küstenstadt

    Unser Hotel liegt im Viertel le Vieux-Port, am Fusse des Fort Saint-Nicolas.
    Le Vieux-Port ist strategisch und ästhetisch betrachtet der beste Ort, um mit einer Erkundungstour durch Marseille zu beginnen. Der alte Hafen (aus dem 15. Jh.!) ist von zwei Festungen umgeben: Fort Saint-Jean und Fort Saint Nicolas. Als Marseille im Jahr 2013 zur Kulturhauptstadt Europas ernannt wurde, unterging Le Vieux-Port einer kompletten Metamorphose: Die Straßen rund um den Hafen sind seitdem nahezu autofrei, dafür wurden neue und sehr schöne Fußgängerbereiche geschaffen.
    Eine Runde um das Hafenbecken mit den unzähligen Booten herum zum Mucem, der Kathedrale und damit auch ins Viertel le Panier.    Read more
