Day 56: Wandering around Mainz

Today we wandered around Benjola’s city of Mainz. She takes me a new way from her house to see new things and walk through beautiful parks and garden spaces.
Today was the farmers market in Mainz and we headed that way for breakfast /lunch. As we walked there, we stopped at one church called St Augustine Church (Augustinerrkirche). The church is also a monastery and dates to 18th century. Beautiful entry that is glass and Rococo decorations. The ceiling has a painting of church father Augustine. Lovely.
Next was some coffee and walking through the market to a restaurant for paninis and focaccia sandwiches. On the way we stopped in some second hand stores and perused the items to see if anything needed to go home with me.
Following our food, we headed to the Mainz Cathedral. What a beautiful structure and presence in the city. Per the city’s website “St. Boniface starting in 746/47; it received the title "Holy See" during the reign of Willigis (975-1011) in Mainz.” The archbishop and Holy See from Roman Empire laid the first stone in 975. The design is based on the St Peter in Rome. The cathedral has been rebuilt a lot and there are various styles inside.
Things that I felt were different include two altars, two crypts, the 13 stages of Christ are not evident and not all the side altars face out toward the nave. One altar had a carved portrait of Mary and other figures called beautiful Mainzer. Benjola mentioned a painting exists of Jesus riding a horse but it is only seen with special access.
After the cathedral we stopped and be a local by eating some sausages with bread and drink wine. The sausage was called Weck, Worscht un Woi and it was very tasty. I had bought a nice Reisling and we had some of it although Benjola had to hunt for a cup.
