    Hukuba

    15. Februar in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

We travelled from Tokyo to Hukuba via bullet train. It was a combined effort from all four of us to navigate Tokyo station, we did it though and had a fast trip to Nagano. Where we travelled to our first ski destination - Hukuba. We checked into our accommodation, sorted out our ski/snowboard hire and had a very much needed dinner and drink in town with some interesting wall artwork made out of old skis.Weiterlesen

End of a fantastic week snowboarding

    6. Januar in Japan ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

What a week. The last few days we have lived on the slopes. The kids progression has been amazing. We have been really fortunate to hook up with great family from WA which meant that Frog and Fern have had some snowboarding buddies which has helped to push each other. Inferno mastered all of the green runs on the mountain and Frog ended up on an epic trip to the 1700m summit runs. This was thanks to meeting up with a great group of Aussie lads who do some pretty hectic snowboarding. They really took Frog under their wing and took him on some double black diamond back country runs through the trees. You are supposed to get accredited for these runs but Frog took them on after only 4 days on the slopes. I also went with the Frog and the boys to the summit runs, to say that I was very quiet and apprehensive on the way up in the gondola is an understatement. The 20 minute trip seemed to take forever and the higher it went the more nervous I got. To say that these runs were steep is an understatement but after a 4 cartwheel stack on the first run, tackling these mad sections definitely helped with my snowboarding as well. The last day was a very full day and I was the assigned photographer taking photos of Frog through the trails runs practising some aerials. Inferno even started navigating the small jumps course. Our evenings have been spent having a beer with all the people we have met at our fantastic accommodation and/or local bars. Froggo even joined the boys for a late night game of cards, rinsing them for 16000 Yen ($160). To throw things into the mix, Kate celebrated her birthday with a delivered 18" pizza. Sad to be leaving but thankful for the experience and the people we met. Snowboarding with the kids has been an amazing experience and one that I definitely want to replicate.Weiterlesen

    Super snowboarding

    1. Januar in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

The last 2 days we have just been in the snow ❄️ all day! We just get up out of our snuggly warm bed and go straight up there. But it does take a while to get all of our gear on! We had a sunny day and it felt nice and warm and I even took my ski jacket off. We went into a kids area to practice some more and I also went on a tube down the hill. I also went on a toboggan. I am getting better on the snow board. I had to learn how to stop before dad would take me on the chair lift up to the top. So I practiced heaps and nailed it. So dad got me a ticket and went up. You just sit still all the way up and at the top of the hill you have to jump off. I felt so excited to be at the top. It was a long way down but I did it! I went up 2 times this day.
I have made a really good friend called Edie who is also staying at our hotel. We played together all night.
Our next day of snowboarding was the best! I went up on the lift 6 times with Edie. We snowboarded together all day. I kept on getting better and better. I can do a 180 I think.
On the way up to the top on our last go, I dropped my board off the chairlift! Oops! Frog went down to get it and brought it back up to me. Next time I will definitely make sure it is clicked onto my boot.
We had an onsen whilst everyone was still out snowboarding.
I like snowboarding a lot and hope I can keep doing it!

    Snowboarding fun 🏂

    1. Januar in Japan ⋅ ☁️ -4 °C

Posts for January 1st and January 2nd:
All we do is snowboard every day, all day! It was great to have one really sunny day, I actually felt a bit hot! Dad and I have passes now for the ski lift and we went up straight away. You have to click the board on to one foot when you sit on the chairlift to go up. We spent the first day just practising heaps and going up the chairlift. I am definitely getting heaps better.
The next day wasn't as good weather- light snow. It wasn't as good snow to snowboard on the second day either. I hung out with my mate Ronny, who is also staying at the hotel. We are about the same level so we can hang together. He is also 12.
We just spent the day snowboarding down the slopes together. It's so good having a mate to hang out with. In the afternoon we went to a few different runs that I may have had to sneak into, Haha!
I really love snowboarding- it's the best. Nearly as good as surfing. I have improved a lot and it want to keep going all week and just get better and better.

    Tsugaike Hütte

    9. Oktober 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

After travelling to Tsugaike Kogen the day before, I made my way up to Tsugaike Hütte early in the morning. I met my friend Kae there. She is currently working in the Tsugaike Hütte (that is literally the name of the hut. I don't know why it's german).
With one of her coworkers, we started hiking up to Hakuba Oike Pond, passing Mt. Norikura on the way. Next to the pond was a hut and because the workers there were friends from Kae, we got lunch for free!
One of the people there was just celebrating her birthday and after they found out that it was my birthday a few days ago, they surprised me with a cake and a candle (the "5" for 5th of October). Very sweet.
We made our way back and like the way up, it was still misty.
But arriving at the hut, the weather finally opened up and I went to the Tsugaike Nature Park, enjoying the view and the afternoon.
For dinner, I could eat with Kae and her coworkers, which were very welcoming.
    Wow!!

    Hakuba/Iwatake - Day 10

    24. Januar in Japan ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

Freya and Sebi both stayed at the chalet today. Freya was still feeling pretty awful, probably dehydrated and still feverish. Sebi's cough and weak legs kept him down. James stayed with them in the morning and Ali in the afternoon.

Iwatake was a great pick for the skiers today. We were in the first gondolas and on the slopes by 8am. The overnight fresh snowfall created a powdery blanket that was wonderful for skiing: silent, soft, and deep. The white-canopied trees were beautiful and the breeze occasionally shook their powdery pollen onto passing skiers.

We tried our hand (or foot?) at weaving through the trees and Lucie and Valentina were better at navigating the narrow tracks than Mario and Ali. Andrea detected the smell of cinnamon scrolls, but we couldn't locate them.

We ate long-awaited ramen for lunch on the sunny outdoor deck and then took some more hair-raising routes between the trees that ended with Valentina doing a big, unexpected jump off a cliff face (not quite) and landing perfectly!

Ali and James swapped in the afternoon to stay with Freya and Sebi. Freya started eating and feeling a bit better so there was energy enough for the usual game of Cards Against Humanity. Who won is entirely unimportant.

    Hakuba/Happo - Day 9

    23. Januar in Japan ⋅ ☁️ -3 °C

Freya, Sebi and Ali stayed at home today and Mario skied in the afternoon only. The others skied at Happo in the freezing snow and fog to start with, but the weather improved in the afternoon. Mario, Andrea and James had dinner out in the evening. Everyone was knackered!Weiterlesen

    Hakuba/Goryu - Day 8

    22. Januar in Japan ⋅ ☁️ -5 °C

Today we explored Goryu resort which has a lot of greens at the base. It was the busiest resort so far and so a bit more stressful. Mario was impatient with the queues of up to a maximum (or should that be minimum 🤔) of five people.

Sebi was still ill and feeling weak and Freya also caught it today. They stayed at home with James who had a rest day planned anyway. He cooked up a storm for them with pot noodles, boiled eggs and toast.

Andrea, Valentina, Lucie and Ali met the Rutkowskis at Imori and they again guided us to the gondola and up to the cool reds and amazing views. After a beef udon lunch we went back down to the bottom and splintered into family groups. Lucie' technique improved a lot and she now skis parallel very well.

Lucie, Ali and Val caught the bus back to the chalet early at 1.45pm. Day three of skiing and everyone is getting tired. Andrea and Mario carried on for longer.

Mario and Ali did a supermarket market shop to buy essentials like bread, butter (in a tube!), gin and beer. Mario then went to a public onsen which he didn't rate much but decided to do for the experience.

James chopped garlic expertly and cooked rice to feed us for a week. Mario cooked again with Andrea's help. Freya got worse and Sebi seemed to stay the same but was getting weaker from not enough food.

    Hakuba/Happo - Day 7

    21. Januar in Japan ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

With Sebi still feeling very sick, Andrea spent the day with him and the rest of us met up with the Rutkowskis again, in Happo this time.

This resort has the highest elevation in Hakuba and the steepest slopes at the top. We skied with the kids and had a curry with rice for lunch at the bear café. At 1.30pm the kids had a lesson with Victor while the adults took the chance to do some steeper runs including a black run, which Ali confidently recommended and which was great.

There were no queues anywhere here, and few people on the slopes, despite it being high season. The snow was almost perfect and the weather cold but sunny. Almost ideal conditions. We really enjoyed Happo.

In the evening, the Coventrys had dinner at The Rabbit Hole with the Rutkowskis and Val while the rest of the Contreras stayed to be with Sebi. We learned that Danielle is fascinated with cults and that Stu is really quite witty.

More G&T's back at the house and straight to bed.

    Hakuba/Iwatake - Day 6

    20. Januar in Japan ⋅ 🌧 2 °C

Our first full day in Hakuba was a beautiful bluebird (sunny with blue skies) day with no wind. Unfortunately, Sebi got sick with the flu. He and Andrea joined us in the afternoon at Iwatake where we were skiing with Sienna's family. This is a lower, family-friendly resort good for beginners and snowboarders. The best run was down the back past the swing.

Sebi felt worse and got quite sick afterwards. We ordered in pizza for dinner and drank Japanese gin. Kinobi and Roku are the best. Val led the guessing game where we all write down three words and then in teams of two, have to first explain the word, then act it out and then describe with just one word. Mario and Freya tied with Ali and Lucie for first place.
