    Portomarin to Palas de Rei

    May 7 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Another amazing day on the Camino!
Although the morning was chilly and there was fog over the water and the hills, it was uplifting to see the number of pilgrims marching on before the sun came out.
And although a big part of the way run alongside a road, it was still gratifying to see the landscape every time I looked up and around.
Today was probably the busiest day I have seen on the Camino. One minute I was alone and the next I was “where did all these people appear from?”
Some seemed to be walking slowly and some rushing through it to get a spot at a municipal albergue.
For me, it is important to consider stops to take off my shoes and lift my foot for a while. The only drawback I see to that is that every stop seems to also include a Serrano ham sandwich and a coffee!!!
But that is also when you get to talk to pilgrims a little.
Today, after asking a young Spanish guy to take a picture, we ended up walking the last 10 km together, sharing stories and, of course, discussing politics and cultural differences. We were also joined by a young lady walking with her dog, who asked our advice about what to do with her knees because she was in too much pain. Oh did we have advice to give! And drugs too!! Javier immediately took a scarf out of his pack-pack and wrap it to apply some compression and I loaded her up with my endless supply of anti-inflammatories and then some!!
I also learned that Steven Spielberg is walking the Camino behind us!!! Not many people recognize him, but he is staying at albergues just as us, commoners. A pilgrim had taken a photo with him.
I guess there may be another Camino movie in the making.
The journey tomorrow will be a little shorter and hopefully, it won’t start raining until the afternoon.

    Remediation

    October 25, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

    From left to right:
    - New inserts (I called my podiatrist who suggested removing my orthotics and trying something new). These are the squishiest the store had.
    - Red label and pack: I’m sending my backpack ahead via transport and taking about 13 pounds off of my feet.
    - Below the red label: Ankle brace
    - Paracetamol: The strongest dose they had.

    Fingers crossed!

Portomarin-Hospital de la Cruz 7 miles

    October 25, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

“It’s okay to stop,” is what Laura said and is all I needed to lay my head down on my poles and cry.

I hope all I need is a light day and that tomorrow will be better. I am waiting for the siesta to end so I can go get some ball of feet inserts and a brace for my ankle because it has been sending increasingly angry pain up my leg when I step down unevenly.

I feel very disappointed in my body, I can’t lie.

The emotional gas that has been pushing me is running very low. I now look at my trail runners with absolute dread. I will never wear them again after this. I don’t know if they aren’t up to the task or if my feet are just so bad that no shoe could sustain what I’ve been doing to them but I want to blame something other than myself so my shoes it is.

Laura, on the other hand, purchased a new pair of shoes in Portomarin yesterday and absolutely killed it today. She did all 15 miles like a boss. I’m so stinking proud of her. She was really struggling and was in so much pain and she just fixed that shit right up.

In the cab to Palas de Rei, the driver asked me where to go and I told him the name of the hotel. “Okay,” he said. I said, “Yo se?” intending to say, “You know it?” But “yo se” means “I know” so then I said, “Tu se?” which is closer because “tu” means you but “se” is still the first person conjugation of “know” so then I laughed and finally spit out the (mostly) correct, “Tu sabes?” And followed it up with, “Mi espanol no es bueno,” as if he needed me to tell him that.

Day 25, Portomarin to Palas de Rei, 27km

    September 25, 2024 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

We have somehow got our day numbering mucked up. Today is the 25th so that should be the title day number. Does it matter, not really.
Another day amberling along country lanes and footpaths. As Paul W said yesterday, pilgrim numbers have risen dramatically. At no moment on our 27km day were we alone. If you stop for a moment you are passed by 20 people. An Australian couple I spoke to briefly had not expected such crowds and were overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time. It is what it is.
There have been two fat American priests on the trail and we finally spoke to one of them today. Paul was naturally forward and suggested to the priest that he was on a weight loss Camino. Thankfully he laughed. He is from a Parish outside of Houston (Texas) on a sort of sabbatical celebrating 10 years since ordination. Somewhat weirdly he is wearing his priest dog collar. You don’t see doctors wearing stethoscopes on the trail. The conversation didn't last long enough for us to ask the why question. Maybe tomorrow.

The weather has not been good with occasional showers and more rain on the way. Raining now so relaxing in bunks. In-house dinner is not until 8 pm. Normally the dinner at albergues are at 7pm so a very Spanish eating time for us. Cafe's during the day are getting expensive. 8€ ($15) for a simple lunch. Up from 5€ on earlier sections. Due to the colder weather beer consumption has decreased so budgets still on target. My photos are a bit rubbish today. Phone may be on its way out. 65km to go.

Etappe Ferreiros nach Palas de Rei

    August 29, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    Part 2 of Day 28

    July 21, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

These are the churches we visited and walked by and the different Pilgrim statues.
At our albergue, we had a communal dinner made by the owner Marchelo. I met Kristine from Nebraska, David from Northern England, Lee'Ann from Africa, Katie & Nedie from France and Marchelo from Tuscany. All beautiful souls breaking bread. The picture of Spain shows all the different Camino that people can do.Read more

Day 28 to Palas Del Rei

    July 21, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We have 40 miles left, 68 kms... 3 DAYS LEFT. 28 days completed and 460 miles walked/hiked. Today's walk was really cold the entire way. For the 1st time, I wished I had a jacket but we survived. Sunrise was beautiful.
The rookies didn't bother me as much today. No blairing radios for all to hear🙏

Day 31 to Palas de Rei

    June 8, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Nice day... found my walking pace at 9:30

Also passed the 85,9km mark - 2024 Comrades distance... just as an aside... you cannot walk the Comrades... 8:22/km is the slowest time in order to finish within 12 hour cut-off. Yes! Of course I have FOMO.

So tomorrow I will follow all the runners!

  • Day 31

    Palas de Rei

    May 22, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Another day in and out of the rain. Good thing the poncho is holding up! The countdown is really on at this point, as each signpost marks my journey closer Santiago. Galicia continues to be beautiful and green despite the rain. I have gotten used to a light breakfast - toast and coffee; followed by second breakfast - coffee/orange juice and a pastry (maybe bacon and eggs) a few hours later. Going back to one breakfast may be difficult 🤔

I left my phone charger in Portomarín, so when my phone battery died it made for an interesting scramble in and out of 6 stores this afternoon looking for a charger, each one pointing me to another location (with no GoogleTranslate or Maps to help). I finally found one, and reconnected with a fellow pilgrim in time for dinner.
