    We woke up. Got ready. Took the MTR to the ferry terminal. Then, we jumped onto a TurboJet ferry bound for Macau—Country #26! (Okay, technically, it’s still China, but I’m counting it. Shhh.)

    Macau is one of China’s two SARs (Special Administrative Regions), along with Hong Kong, meaning it operates with a high degree of autonomy. It has a population of about 720,000 and a GDP per capita so high that it puts most countries to shame. Why? Gambling. Lots and lots of gambling. Macau is the casino capital of the world, bringing in more revenue than Las Vegas. The city was a Portuguese colony for over 400 years, and you can still see its influence everywhere—especially in the architecture, food, and very dramatic street signs written in Portuguese.
