      Bordeaux, France

      December 1, 2022 in France ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

What city in France shares a name with a female deer that has nothing to do?

Welcome to Bordeaux! The city itself was Emily's favorite large city in France that we visited. It had the charm, warmth and romance of a small French town with the creamy sand buildings yet the amenities of a big city bustling with life, restaurants, wine bars and bakeries. Bordeaux is a port city on the river Garonne and has a long history of wine making and trading. Today it is the region of France that produces the most wine. See our post on the Wine Museum of Bordeaux, but in short you can have easy access to great white and red wines depending on what area of Bordeaux you choose. Bordeaux boasts many beautiful city gates as well as multiple stunning Château's within walking distance or just a train ride away. Downtown it also has Rue Sainte-Catherine which is the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe. It also has its own native dessert treat found at all bakeries in the region called the Canele. The two older ladies we had lunch with in Versailles recommended it and it was very unqiue and tasty treat. We will post that later in cuisine of France. This city can be best passed with leisurely strolls down winding alleys, window shopping the day away, popping into the cities numerous wine bars, cafes and bistros as well as learning more about the city and history in numerous wine museums across the city. The day trips are also wonderful and can be accessed by bus or train usually only an hour away. Towns like St Emillion, Cadillac, Arachon, and many others offer white sand beaches on the coast, inland sleepy wine towns, bustling medieval towns with great markets there is definetly something for everyone.Read more

      Paris bis Bordeaux

      July 27 in France ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

      Bordeaux, France

      April 13 in France ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Well, Jeff and I had an exciting day of travel to Bordeaux, France. We left Copenhagen for a change of planes in Paris before reaching our final destination. Just as soon as we touched down in Paris, we immediately took off straight up again. The aborted landing was more of a thrill than either of us needed at this juncture.
We swooped around and landed again. Apparently a plane had not cleared the runway the first time we landed.😬😱

Anyway, alls well that ends well. Jeff and I had a fun evening in Bordeaux which was absolutely teeming with people. Most of the city is a Workd Heritage sight and there is some incredible architecture.

      Arrive in Bordeaux

      July 4, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

It was a bit of a tiring day today. Another gloomy start to the day in Pau, but we had plenty of time to get on the train to head to our next stop, Bordeaux. The train ride was fairly insignificant but pretty crowded, I guess because the final destination was Paris. Luckily, we were early enough on that we could place our luggage in the rack, unlike many who got on later. Lots of tree farms along this route that I figure were for lumber, as they were mostly pine trees. While the skies didn't clear any once we arrived in the city, it at least wasn't raining. We caught the tram to the closest stop by our apartment and made the trek. Our building, modern on the outside and pretty nondescript, is very nice on the inside. The large balcony is really nice. Enjoyed dinner outside at a lively bistro in the shadow one of the large churches. Indulged in their meat and cheese platter and sampled the local wine.Read more

      Moving on - fast

      September 11 in France ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Fast train transport. We are fans.
Easy access to the stations by proximity to the centre and transport routes; turn up minutes before departure; storage for baggage on the train; quiet; on time; clean; FAST.
I am perturbed by the promise of speed as we roll out of Gare Montparnasse on the south side of the city. We are lulled by the stately progress and distracted while we settle in a make electronic connections.
      The flat farmland unfolds
“How fast are we going Regina? Peruse the farm land wizzing past. That’s a cute village. There is another, and another. Must be doing 120k - Or 298kph.

      August 14 in France ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Wieder mal gestrandet. Also fahren wir jetzt durchs Medoc, nutzt ja nix.Read more

      Onwards to France!

      August 21, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Yesterday was our last day with our friends at Lake Como and we had a relaxing day in Gravedona. They took us to the Sailing Club on the lake where we lay in the sun and later had lunch. Back at their home we did some admin work on the computer before packing our bags for the next day.
Last night was a memorable evening. Kris cooked a typical and delicious Italian eggplant pasta served with cold meats and cheese antipasto. The evening sunset views over the lake were beautiful as we chatted while listening to a range of Andre Bocelli music. A great way to round off our lovely stay here in Italy.
Today we picked up our E-Vai car-sharing electric car and drove to Milan Malpensa airport. A hot day but thankfully in the air conditioned car, and the route we took was along the western shores of Lake Como. Lovely scenery!
Then it was off to Terminal 2 for our easyJet flight to Bordeaux in France.
Our plans to meet up with our friends Peter & Lou on their lovely canal boat experienced a bit of a hiccup earlier in the week. Plan A was to meet them in Bordeaux and spend the next 9 days slowly cruising eastwards on the Garonne River, the Lot River, and the Canal Lateral à La Garonne finishing up in Toulouse. However last week a large commercial barge smashed into the doors of one of the large locks on the Garonne River severely damaging the lock and putting it out of action. Since then no boats have been able to travel on the Garonne River until this lock is fixed. So Pete & Lou have not been able to get to Bordeaux and our cruise plans have had to change.
Plan B now is for us to meet Pete & Lou on their boat at Carcassonne. This means us flying to Bordeaux as scheduled but staying overnight tonight because the flight gets into Bordeaux too late to catch the train to Carcassonne. Early tomorrow morning we will catch the train and meet up with our friends in Carcassonne around 10am. The cruise route we take after that is up to our friends to work out but we hope that in 9 days we will still be back in Toulouse to start the journey back home to Brisbane.
Today the flight was uneventful and we arrived OK in Bordeaux on time and finally reached our hotel at 9:00pm.
Another early start tomorrow with the alarm is set for 5am. It’s going to be another hot day so we hope the train journey goes well. We are looking forward to seeing our friends and relaxing as we cruise the canals of France.

      Weinberge soweit das Auge reicht

      May 23 in France ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Was will man mehr?!

      Exploring Bordeaux

      August 4, 2020 in France ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Although the Ibis Styles does have fairly small rooms, it has big beds, so it was nice to stretch out and enjoy a good night’s sleep. Breakfast was included and was the usual continental fare of bread rolls, cold meat, cheese, yoghurt and coffee. I did however indulge in a portion of Nutella. It was a lovely sunny morning which developed into a lovelier hot day. I bought an all day public transport ticket which gave me unlimited travel on the excellent modern trams, on buses and included the local ferry. Great value at 5 euros 💶 , and I certainly made good use of it.

First stop was a visit to probably the most photographed spot in Bordeaux - the Place de la Bourse and the Water Mirror. The water was just coming on at 9.30am when I visited, so I got some good shots before it got busy with pesky kids splashing about and ruining the mirror reflection. I then took a trip on the free BAT ferry up the River Garrone and got a good view of the city from the water. The Garonne is a mighty river, as wide as the Thames, but is a chocolate brown colour, like molten Dairy Milk. Next stop, the magnificent Grand Theatre (no shows on at the moment sadly), and the mighty Saint André cathedral, adjacent to the Hôtel de Ville. This huge cathedral was regrettably closed - and I did so want to see where Eleanor of Aquitaine was married. So many references to Eleanor here - even the local sports centre was named after her - and having only recently watched The Lion in Winter, there was no sign of Katharine Hepburn having a go on the dumbbells!

I realised this morning that in my efforts to economise and travel with a carry-on bag only, I had forgotten to pack any socks! I headed therefore to my favourite French department store - the Galeries Lafayette. I won a watch as they were having the last of their 70% off sale, and got 4 pairs of nice white ‘chausettes’ for 5 euros!

Back to sightseeing, and I took in the flamboyant gothic style Basilica Saint Michel with its beautiful stained glass. Had to walk back quite a bit to get the whole of its huge separate bell tower in the photo! By contrast, the catholic Sainte-Croix church looked diminutive, but lovely in sunshine.

A highlight was the famous Cailhau Gate, in the Saint- Pierre district which I climbed up via a tight staircase reminiscent of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh, and was rewarded with a lovely view of the river. And not too far, the Saint-Paul district had its famous gate too: the Grosse Cloche, another jewel of Bordeaux. What an impressive city for monuments!

After a visit to see the ‘lion’ at Stalingrad (yes, that’s the name of the area), had a rest at the hotel before going out for dinner. In spite of the coronavirus, all the restaurants and pavement cafés were busy, so I took a tram to the quieter area of the Bacalan, where I treated myself to a nice French meal of pâte de fois gras, and tartare de boeuf (I had forgotten it was raw, minced steak!) All washed down with a nice glass of Bordeaux 🍷 - well, when in Rome...
