Penzance, Newlyn, and Mousehole

9:30 Eurostar Lille to London St. Pancras, and yes, I did book seat 61.
Arrived at St. Pancras in good time for a full English at Weathespoons. Then the gods of transport struck. Got to Farringdon to find the Elizabeth line wasn't running so had to double back on the Circle line. My easy 10 minute trip to Paddington turned into 30 minutes and had me running to catch my train.
Managed it with 3 minutes to go and had a first class table for 4 all to myself to Exeter when a man claimed the window seat ☹️ Luckily he turned out to be good company. On his way to the Scilly isles to visit his wife's ashes, shades of Last Bus.
Arrived at Youth Hostel at 5:30 and set off to walk to Mousehole via a chippy in Newlyn. Saw a seal! 🦭 Only one, just her head sticking out of the water about 25 meters offshore, but definitely a seal.
Walked on to Mousehole and caught the bus back to the YH.

First dinner in Lille

We caught the fast train from Paris to Lille, checked in and went for a walk.

We found the cutest resteraunt and had the most amazing smoked food ❤

The waiter only spoke French, we had some struggle getting his attention as we originally were seated for 5 and only had 4 members. In France a waiter only serves once all members are seated at the table. Eventually we were able to explain there were only 4 and we had a go at speaking French for out orders.

106 years after the battle of Fromelle

An amazing event of remembrance. The town locals turned up along with other visitors to the region and we all contemplated what must have been going through the minds of those men before they stormed the enemy trenches! Thousands were killed and many more wounded. We're so grateful we have had this opportunity to reflect on their courage and faithfulness even in face of insurmountable odds. We put up with 44°during the ceremony...we can only begin to wonder what they put up with 106 years ago! Less we forget.Read more

Two diggers rededicated and Cambrai.

This morning we celebrated the rededication of two new headstones for SGT Edwin Lillie and LCPL Paddy O'Neil. Mates, who served together, we're killed in the same dugout and now eternally rest alongside each other in Roisel, France. Afterwards we took a leisurely drive to Cambrai for a look around and an ice cream!Read more

Day 14 Vertigo and Menin Gate!

It sure has been a strange 2 weeks! Covid has taken a crazy toll on my system and I haven't been able to kick it properly! Vertigo! I've never had it before but it's the side effect that's been knocking me around!
I'll get out again today and hopefully a little more steady! It's a big one tonight...Menin Gate!

The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is in Ypres, Belgium and dedicated to the Commonwealth soldiers who were killed during the battles on the Western Front.
The last post ceremony has taken place every night at 8pm since 1928 and the local town via the Last Post Association have honoured the war dead through such a solemn and moving tribute.

We were so privileged to be part of the evening proceedings by escorting an unknown Australian digger to lying in state for the ceremony. We celebrated discovering him and even though we are still unaware of his identity, it is only a matter of time before further DNA results will return a positive identification! Some of the Jonathan Church recipients escorted him in, I was honoured to play the digeridoo and our bugler Aaron played the last post. Others participated with the Ode of Remembrance and the Kohima as well as wreath layers. It was an amazing and memorable event that will stay with each of us for years to come. Tomorrow we I'll lay the digger to rest at Tyne Cot Cemetery.Read more

Day 10 Freedom!

Finally out of iso after 7 days in the hotel room! Goodness me, I think I overdid it a little for day one...18K steps, thanks Mitch! 🤣 we had a walk around Lille and a drive out to Poziers and Thiepval to see the memorials! This is my first experience of the French landscape. It's amazing how 'sleepy' everything looks. The villages seem to be constantly closed with no obvious 'corner stores', and virtually no one on the village streets!
Another amazing feature are the countless war cemeteries! They are dotted across the country and beautifully cared for what an amazing spectacle!Read more

Day 3 - 9 Iso!

Not a lot to share! Well, at least I've caught up with my sleep!
I have so much time to focus on my Chaplains Reflection for each of the services. It's amazing how much information we have available to us on each of the recipients of new headstones even though they perished over 100 years ago!
I sadly missed PTE John Quinn, PTE Lewis Webster and PTE Leslie Styles but the boss jumped into my role and did an amazing g job!
As I read of their life journeys, and even look at their pictures I can almost hear them speak to me!
I will be out for next weeks proceedings so looking forward to overcoming this infection and doing what I came here to do!

The view from my window doesn't afford me much but it's relaxing just to people watch for a bit each day! I'll upload a couple of things I've seen! 👍🤣Read more

Landed in Paris yesterday (July 1) and travelled by train to Lille.
Huge journey but memorable! 👍

July 2 - had a great day out with Connor and Honey but felt a little seedy! Now I know why...tested positive to Covid! Connor and Honey bought me a few supplies and visited me to say good bye! 🥺Read more

Farewell PTE DUdley Green

PTE Dudley Green was 25 years old when he was killed in battle and for over 106 years no one has known where he lay! He went from Dudley Green to missing in action, presumed killed. No earthly remains to mourn, no headstone to visit, no hope for his 11 brothers and sisters to hold on to! But now a new generation of family can say, 'here he is!'

Thank you to the Victoria Barracks Museum for donating the watter bottle and mess tin which we used to remember with a little bit of Australia with eucalypt leaves. Your generosity was deeply appreciated.Read more
