What a beautiful little village Wertheim is. The Cruise Director, Leonard told us it is his favourite place and we can see why.

Caught Choo Choo trains from the dock to the town centre, and had a walking tour after which Bob and I walked up the hill to the castle which offered fantastic views of the area.Read more

This morning we had an expert on board that demonstrated his craft of glass blowing I bought a beautiful bud vase for only $18. We have lost a few hours on our schedule because one propeller broke but we will soon be in Werthem & the Captain has arranged for repair or replacement when we go on our city tour

Another walking tour today this is a very small city- our tour leader pointed out a memorial to the towns Jewish ancestors who died during WWII- then another delicious dessert at lunch - but I am walking 10,000 steps a day
In the afternoon we went to a home hosted coffee/dessert. Our host, Doris, is in the back row behind me. She was extremely friendly & easy to talk to — she has hosted these get togethers for Grand Circle cruise lines for 18 years. Pictured is Jorge coy pond in her backyard. Tonight the crew will speak to our group about their native countries. They are all young & very polite & competent

Years ago, a friend of mine (the super talented Northamptonshire based composer and multi instrumentalist Philip Bass) said to me, "The symphony orchestra is one of our greatest inventions".
It certainly is, and this tour has seen two remarkable groups of people sing and play some very difficult music amazingly well.
We've been faced with numerous challenges along the way - just one of them being the need to lift the harp up a lengthy staircase in the Archbishop's Palace. Recognising our need for help, a team of student volunteers immediately assembled to help lift our heavy and valuable harp so carefully, it was as if as if they had paid for it themselves.
I jumped at the chance to be a part of this tour, and I'm so glad I did. The team spirit across the entire group of young people and teachers has made this tour an absolute pleasure. A huge thank you to all of the students and staff for all of the unforgettable musical moments from our amazing choir and symphony orchestra. The standing ovations at our concerts say it all.
Bravo. Encore!

Wertheim lies at the confluence of the Main and Tauber Rivers. The Main has 34 locks and 33 hydropower stations on it and is part of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal. The rivers are fed by spring snow-melt in the nearby Alps and the town is often subjected to flooding. Several buildings show the high water levels through the centuries.Read more

Langs de Tauber, richting Miltenburg (35 km). We volgen in de heenweg de Randweg Liebliches Taubertal 'der klassiker'/'der sportive'. De terugweg zou de sportieve versie moeten worden, als we de steile col overgeraken... Spijtig genoeg te warm (35°) en maar gekozen voor the easy way home (= in grote versnelling langs de Tauber).
Leuke, rustige dorpjes/stadjes onderweg met vakwerkhuizen: Stadtprozelten (Henneburg), Dorfprozelten, Freudenberg, Burgstadt. Handvol fietsers onderweg, meer niet 👍
Wel beu dat ALLE terrassen, biergartens en zomerbars onderweg gesloten zijn op maandag 🤔🤯Read more

This is again a medieval city with many buildings made with the timber frame and straw/mud and plaster infill. The tower was on quite a lean, it was formerly used as a goal for drunkard men and arguementative women. But as the guide explained “ in the morning the men would be sober but the women . . .”. Many buildings have second and subsequent floors with larger floor areas than the ground floor so overhang into the streets. This is because local rates were based on building floor area which was calculated by multiplying ground floor area by the number of floors. Therefore the extra overhang of upper floors they had for free. This is a town of glass blowers, many shops with beautiful glass. One of the workers came onto the ship and did a demo for us before we went to the town. Made a killing on the after demo sales and town visit to his shop. Quite pricey though.Read more

Wertheim Floods

Flooding is one of Germany's most devastating and costliest natural disasters, periodically affecting hundreds of communities, particularly those located along the Main River. Wertheim being located at the confluence of two rivers, the Main and the Tauber, is particularly vulnerable.

Flooding in Wertheim is not a recent phenomenon. High water levels have been marked on the walls of buildings going back as early as 1595. Many of these markings can be seen on the sides of several medieval buildings in the historical district. In recent years, severe flooding has occurred in 1970, 1982, 1995, 1998, and 2003. This photo taken near the town centre shows the same area during the 2003 flood. One wonders how these old buildings are able to withstand repeated flooding episodes and remain habitable.Read more
