Guarapo & palm honey

Palm honey, a typical product of the island, is also noteworthy. Here in my valley they grow a lot of palms to extract guarapo from it, to produce palm honey.

The procedure for obtaining palm honey is as follows:

- First, the palm is peeled from the top to extract the sap.

- After a while, the sap begins to flow through a reed split in half and falls into the bucket provided for this purpose.

- The next day, before the sun rises, the bucket is lowered from the palm tree and taken to a cauldron where it will be heated.

- After about two hours, the guarapo (palm sap) begins to boil and caramelizes as it loses moisture, until it reaches a point where it becomes the well-known palm honey.

-At the end of the season, the palm is left to rest for at least five years. After this time, the extraction process can be repeated again.

In the town you can visit the Casa de la Miel de Palma, an Interpretation Centre where you can learn about the Canary Island palm and the guarapeo culture.Weiterlesen

El Cercado

Today we actually wanted to go hiking, but as it was raining up in the laurel forest, we drove to El Cercado.

The small village is located south of the Garajonay National Park and west of Chipude. The inconspicuous village with its mostly single-storey stone houses is the pottery village of La Gomera par excellence.

Three pottery studios still practice the traditional pottery art of the Gomeran natives here today. This is characterized by the fact that it is made freehand without a potter's wheel. In their shops you can see the three potters at work almost every day and buy one or two of their works.

The ceramics of El Cercado get their specific shine from rubbing with Siena red clay. It is then fired in a wood-fired stone oven.

There is also a small museum in the village, where the history of pottery in the village is told and the production process is explained in detail.

Since my love is a woodturner, I have a lot of bowls and dishes made of wood, so I did not buy any pottery here.Weiterlesen

La Casa de la Playa

Today we went swimming at Playa de La Calera and then went to eat at La Casa de la Playa.

The fish was delicious and inexpensive, I had grilled scorpion fish and cheese croquette filled with guava.

You can enjoy the sunset from the restaurant and listen to the drummers - a clear recommendation!

The restaurant closes at 8pm, but since we still had to drive through the serpentines afterwards, it worked out really well for us ❤️.Weiterlesen

Playa de La Calera

La Calera and La Puntilla beaches form the main beach in Valle Gran Rey and are about one kilometre long. They surround the village, meaning there are various places where you can watch the sunset.

You can watch the sunset right by the sea, either on your beach towel or on one of the many terrace bars.

The sunset at La Calera beach is one of the most popular on the island and is known among hippies all over the world. In winter, drums and other instruments sound at sunset. and sometimes fire shows are held later on the sand in front of the old Casa Maria bar.Weiterlesen

Mirador de Abrante

Today we had an awesome clear view, so we went to the Anbrante viewpoint.

At first glance, Abrante looks like an ordinary viewing platform. However, at the top of the cliff in the north of La Gomera where it is located, visitors do not look down into the precipice, but rather 'float' above it. From the end of the viewing platform comes a seven-metre-long cantilever with a glass floor, which keeps anyone brave enough to walk on it suspended in the air, contemplating a typical rural landscape of the Canary Islands.

Four hundred metres below, and in the absence of clouds, you can see the small valley of Agulo, with its clusters of houses and agricultural terraces, wedged between almost vertical cliffs and open to the Atlantic Ocean. In the distance, you can see Tenerife.

The view from Agulo down there up to Abrate is also very interesting because then you can see how far the cantilever extends into nothingness 😱.Weiterlesen

Alojera (beach)

I live in Alojera, with a wonderful view of the beach.

Alojera is located away from major roads and stretches from the coach (beach) up to a height of around 400m where the first houses are. You can enjoy an uninterrupted view of wonderful sunsets.

The typical Canarian date palms grow in the valley, from which guarapo is extracted, which is then used to make the traditional palm honey.

The town can be reached from Epina via a winding road from Valle Gran Rey or Vallehermoso.

The beach offers a breathtaking view of the sea. Depending on the swell, you can plunge into the waves here, or if they are too high, a small seawater pool invites you to take a refreshing dip.

There has been a small upturn in this remote part for a few years now, but the village has retained its cozy, quiet character.

I enjoy the silence, far from the hustle and bustle, because it is ideal for spending quiet vacation days.

If you are looking for a typical Gomerian atmosphere, you can relax here with a Cafe Cortado or Barraquito in the village café and watch the leisurely comings and goings. I will post some pictures of that later on.

Reisenderja, das ist das licht und die calima. eigentlich isses recht grün, weil wir hier ja schon ein bisschen vom NO-passat mitbekommen. es kommt im vergleich zum valle etwas wasser die bächlein runter.

Banda de las Rosas

Banda de las Rosas is a village at the upper end of the Valle Hermoso.

I love the Valle Hermoso because time is long here and tourists are far away. Every now and then someone gets lost here, but since the neighboring valleys and the laurel forest are more hyped, it is and remains quiet.

Further down in the valley there is a reservoir which is dammed by the Encantadora Dam, forming a reservoir with the largest capacity on the island (750 million liters of water).

You can hike from Vallehermoso around the reservoir and back, which is a nice tour. This time I went up the valley with the car until Banda de las Rosas

I love ❤️ freshly squeezed orange juice 🍊🍊🍊 very much. Almost every day during the orange harvest season, I squeeze a few oranges into juice. When I have visitors, like Heidrun and Rainer at the moment, I naturally squeeze three times as much 🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊.

Since I always do my workations in winter, it's always orange season. So I always have my electric orange press with me, and this time is no exception.
The oranges here are super ripe, super cheap, super sweet and super fruity. Ohn nom nom 😋❤️.Weiterlesen

Frangollo

Today I had my first frangollo 😊.

Frangollo is a Canarian dessert dish, made from milk, millet or maize flour, lemon, eggs, sugar, butter, raisins, almonds and cinnamon.

Many variations exist, for example replacing the milk with water, or adding aniseed.

I like it but if I had the choice between crema catalana and frangollo, I would definitely choose crema catalana 😋.Weiterlesen

La Gomera Airport is located in the municipality of Alajeró and is twelve kilometers (as the crow flies) from the island's capital, San Sebastián de La Gomera. The shortest road connection is 33 kilometers long.

La Gomera Airport has one runway and is 1,500 meters long and 30 meters wide. The airport's passenger terminal has a capacity of 300,000 passengers per year. It is equipped with two gates.

The airport serves domestic flights mainly to the neighboring island of Tenerife. There are also a few flights to Gran Canaria. The flight routes are unprofitable and are only maintained thanks to government subsidies.

The runway is too short for international flights, so most air travelers land in Tenerife. Most tourists arrive at the southern airport of Tenerife, but the flight connection to La Gomera is handled via the northern airport of Tenerife. It is therefore closer, cheaper and usually faster to get to La Gomera via the port of Los Cristianos by ferry or fast ferry.

But Heidrun wanted to go to Gran Canaria, so we took her to the airport. It really is a beautiful airport - the prettiest I have ever visited 😍.Weiterlesen
