    Arrived in Seville

    Now I've arrived in Seville and unfortunately missed the bus to Conil de la Frontera by 30 minutes. The next one doesn't leave for another four hours.

    How awful! Now I have to sit in the shade because it's too hot in the sun and drink a cold drink while I wait for my gazpacho 🤪.

    From the airport, there's a bus into the city every 15 minutes and it takes 30 minutes. It's called the EA and costs 6 €. Tickets are available at a ticket booth right in front of the bus stop.

    The intercity buses then leave from the Estación de autobuses Prado de San Sebastián and the EA stops there. You can buy tickets there on the spot, but I did it online while I was on the bus.

    Now I have a bus ticket for the intercity bus to Conil de la Frontera (18.90 € plus 1 € advance booking fee) and secured a seat right at the front 😍.

    Then, of course, I checked the situation here at the bus station: There are lockers at the bus station, which cost 3 to 5 €, depending on the size.

    But honestly, I'd rather sit here in the café for now and be happy that I've escaped cold, dark, and rainy Hamburg. I can hardly believe that tomorrow I'll be cruising through the sun on my scooter 🛵 and swimming 🏊🏼‍♀️ in the sea 🌊🏝️☀️.    Leggi altro

    Enhanced mobility

    This morning I went back to the bus station to take the bus to Chiclana de la Frontera. I needed to pick up my scooter 🛵.

    Unbelievable but true, the guy at the ticket counter said the bus was probably sold out. When I asked if you could buy tickets online, he answered "no". I arrived at the bus station 20 minutes before departure, wtf? Are they sleeping at the bus station? 😫

    When I asked when all the seats had been sold out, he shrugged. When I asked if they had already been sold yesterday, he also answered "no". A mystery! 🤔

    Could I buy one for tomorrow? Yessss! But I didn't want to, I wanted to go NOW 🚌. "Obviously a stubborn German lady", he thought. 🙄

    He said he'd see what he could do. In short: he managed to get me a seat with a broken backrest adjustment. So I took the bus to Chiclana, lying down 🛌 🤣.

    I picked up my scooter aaaaaaand here it is! 🛵😍
    Almost new, only 1475 km.

    Then I cruised along the country road to Conil, doing some shopping along the way and stacking everything haphazardly onto the scooter. 😂

    First breakfast

    I haven't managed to find an ice cube tray yet, but that will come! 🧊🧊🧊

    But I definitely have enough in the fridge now, and 2 kg of oranges for juicing 🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊. It has to be worth bringing the juicer. 🤣

    So I inaugurated the balcony with my first breakfast. A little late, but at least the important things for today are already done. 🤗    Leggi altro

    The beach of Conil de La Frontera

    It's very windy 🌬️ today, so I was curious to see the kitesurfers on the beach. 🪁🏄

    The beach here is incredibly large—more precisely, wide and long. I live in the east of the city near the Rio Salado. A wooden bridge crosses the river at the front of the beach, and it leads to the quieter part of the beach.

    But there's not much going on anywhere this time of year. Many beach bars are already closed, but I found one that's open. Of course, I treated myself to a tinto de verano there 🍷.    Leggi altro

    My apartment

    This is my apartment.

    It's located in the narrow streets of the old town; you can only get around the house on foot. The nearest accessible street is only 30 meters away, and that's where my scooter is parked.

    The apartment is a small house with three floors. The ground floor only contains the entrance door; everything except the second room is on the first floor, and the second room is right at the top near the roof terrace. There's also a hose up there that I can use to shower.

    The apartment is very cozy and located on the edge of the old town near the Rio Salado. It's a 10-minute walk to the beach, and I can see the sea from the roof terrace.

    The supermarket is a 10-minute walk away, and there are also the alleys with other shops, tapas bars, and ice cream parlors.

    So this time it's not as deserted as in Crete, and close to various tapas sources 🤣😋🤗.    Leggi altro

    Daily working day routine

    It always takes me a day or two to find my workday routine. Where do I go during my lunch break? Do I eat before, during, or afterward?
    Now I seem to have found it, after trying out different routes and swimming spots.

    This is now my swimming spot when I go swimming during my extended lunch break. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to the water; there are reliably nice waves, the surf school flag to tie my bag to, plenty to observe, and a shower to rinse off on the way back. Every now and then, a paramotor whizzes over me.

    Torre Vigía El Palmar

    Today, after work, the time had come for the first small jaunt with the scooter at the end of the working day.

    I chose the Torre Vigía El Palmar, it wasn't that far and there is a small restaurant right on the beach.

    So after work I was able to go shopping quickly and then start off.

    Unfortunately the restaurant was too loud for me, a Spanish live band blared badly mixed from the amplifiers. But without band it would be great, so I'll try again on my way back.

    The beach here is very different from Conil, narrow and there are a few rocks out of the sand. But lovely and I'll remember the restaurant anyway: Restaurante La Torre - because the location on the beach and the distance with the scooter is perfect!    Leggi altro

    Bar - Asador - Freiduría Sánchez

    There are tapas bars like sand on the sea. I won't report on every one, but this one is worth a footprint.

    The bar Asador is a bit off the beaten track and probably that's the reason why it's not Germans who dominate the picture here, but Spaniards.

    The menu is simple and cheap, the quality great and the service friendly and zippy but not stressed.

    I had 3 tapas for 7.50 and the Tinto de Verano was cheaper than anywhere else at 2.50.

    I think it's especially great that there is no hustle and bustle around and above all: it's right around the corner of my apartment on the way to the beach 😊🥰. Perfect!    Leggi altro

    Carajillo

    Anyone who knows me knows that I'm always on the lookout for new coffee drinks. I've found another one here: Carajillo. 😋

    Its origins date back to Cuba's Spanish colonial history. Colonial soldiers mixed coffee with rum to gain courage (coraje in Spanish, hence corajillo and, more recently, carajillo).

    Today, carajillo usually refers to an espresso with brandy (Spanish brandy). However, other spirits such as rum, whiskey, Baileys or anise liqueurs, such as Licor 43 are also common in a carajillo. It is usually served in a small heatproof glass.

    The simplest way to prepare a carajillo is to pour the brandy into the finished espresso. Connoisseurs, however, prefer the "quemado" (= burnt, scorched) version, in which the brandy is heated with a piece of lemon peel and some coffee beans using the steam nozzle of an espresso machine and then ignited. Sugar is caramelized in the flame with the help of a spoon and then added. Finally, the still-burning mixture is placed under the espresso machine and extinguished with the coffee. So I will definitely look around if anyone is serving it like this 🤪.

    Another type of Carajillo, especially popular in summer, is the "Café del tiempo" (coffee of the season). This usually consists of a Carajillo made with anise liqueur and served with a glass of ice cubes. The Carajillo is sweetened to taste and then poured into the glass with ice cubes. I definitely have to taste this, if I stumble over it!

    Although the Carajillo is a very alcoholic and strong drink, it is consumed in Spain at any time of day, even at breakfast or after dinner. That definitely convinced me to give it a try right away 😊. Here in Conil, it is drunk with Baileys, so I started with that 😋🥃.    Leggi altro

    World traveling hammock

    I can't remember where in the world this hammock has hung before. 🌎🌍🗺️🌏.

    It was a brilliant idea to spend some money and buy a hammock that's light and big and, above all, has really good, tree-friendly, long-lasting and, above all, quick-to-install attachments. And it's pink too 🤩. But that was a coincidence, because it was on sale; the color was probably too bright for the average consumer 🤪 . So, although it was still expensive, it wasn't incredibly expensive.

    This time I can't hang it anywhere on the beach, but here on the roof terrace it's hanging perfectly. At 10:00 the sun comes around the corner and then it slowly but surely starts to get too sunny. In the evening I have to hang up a sheet for sun protection.

    And: this time I definitely brought enough wool for the various handicraft projects 🧶🧵.    Leggi altro

    Barbecue

    Last night, Zoran and Micha were there for a sundowner barbecue on the roof terrace 🌅 🐟🦑.

    I've known Zoran from Hamburg for about 30 years. I hadn't seen him in ages, but now Rainer told me that he and Micha happened to be in Conil.

    We were sitting together in a tapas bar the other day, and the conversation turned to my apartment. I told them I had a small house with a large roof terrace and showed them a little video. The two of them were immediately enthusiastic and suggested a barbecue at sunset. It's important to note that Zoran is Croatian and a grill master. I was, of course, immediately on board.

    I got the grill, the coal, candles, and a fridge full of all kinds of drinks, and the two of them brought bonito, calamari, scampi, salad, and bread. First, of course, we went to the sofa on the roof terrace for an aperitif, then to the kitchen and then to the grill.

    Today is Spain's national holiday.

    The National Day of Spain (Spanish: Fiesta Nacional de España) is held annually on 12 October. It is also traditionally and commonly referred to as the Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanicity, Spanishness Day), commemorating Spanish legacy worldwide, especially in Hispanic America.

    National Day of Spain commemorates the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus for Spain on 12 October 1492. The date is a key point for Spain's overseas influence and legacy to the world and to the Americas in particular. It symbolizes Spain's vast, common heritage with today's American countries, which made up the Spanish Empire, the first global power in world history.

    If this holiday falls on a Sunday, the Comunidades Autónomas can decide whether the following day is also a holiday. Andalusia has decided this way, so tomorrow is another holiday here. Pretty practical, I think 🤪.

    That's why it's crowded here in the tapas bars today. Also the beach is full of Spaniards.

    We walked almost to the end of the beach and stopped at El Curro Jiménez on the way back. We just managed to get the last tapas 😋. This tapas beach bar is definitely worth recommending – the other beach restaurants aren't comparable to this one. There's still a Spanish flair here 🏖️❤️.

    Long working days

    I have long working days here. Usually the same amount of time as at home, 9 hours.

    If I start at 7 and take a 2 hour lunch break, I'm done at 18:00. Today I finished at 17:45. But here it is still far from dark.

    That's why I took the scooter to my favorite beach bar. Cruised through the sun ☀️, went swimming 🏊, drank a carajillo ☕ and crocheted 🧶 until the sun went down.

    Now it's time for a tinto de verano 🍷 and then it's time to go home.

    I like this kind of working days, especially if I have hard working days, like today.    Leggi altro

    Torre Vigía de Castilnovo

    The Castilnovo Tower is located on "my" beach 🏝️, meaning the beach around the corner, where I swim every day. It's called Castilnovo beach.

    In 1295, King Sancho IV wanted to reward Don Alonso Pérez de Guzmán for his heroic behavior in the siege of Tarifa by granting him a series of favors, among which were the almadrabas and tuna fishing in the town of Conil.

    To prevent Muslim attacks, Guzmán the Good fortified the coast and the almadraba by building a castle (Guzmán Tower) , the Walls and the watchtowers of Roche Tower , Blanca Tower, Atalaya Tower and Castilnovo Tower, of which only Roche and Castilnovo remain today.

    In the Middle Ages, as a complement to the defensive system consisting of castles and fortresses and a militia that patrolled the coast on horseback daily, a string of watchtowers were built that marked the coastal area from Ayamonte to Gibraltar, such as the Castilnovo Tower.

    These towers alerted neighboring towers through a system of smoke and fire signals, warning the townspeople to be on the alert. 🔥🔥🔥

    Over time, these towers fell into disuse, becoming silent witnesses to a turbulent past. The Castilnovo tower was partially destroyed by the tsunami of November 1, 1755.

    The Castilnovo Tower is the most important in Conil after the Guzmán Tower, as it had a dual purpose: defensive and to assist the almadraba fishing ground of the same name. It was part of a walled enclosure, a small fortress with an alcaide, a prominent position with a voice and vote in the Conil council.

    It is in a state of consolidated ruin. It was restored in 1995.
