  • My workplace

    November 6, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Of course, as always, I'll show you my workplace. This is it.

Nothing has changed in terms of equipment at the moment. I'm very happy with it: my laptop, my EasyRiser for the laptop, an external monitor, external mouse and keyboard, my headset with a foam pad on the microphone to suppress wind noise, and a small USB hub.

I also still have a sun hat with me, because last year it turned out that parasols aren't very practical in windy conditions. 🤪🤣

I always find boxes on site or stack pots to get the external monitor to the same height as the laptop.

Happy working with my workation equipment!

  • Mama Manolis

    November 7, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I finally have some time to write about my arrival. I arrived last Saturday and the key was in the key box outside the house.

I already know the apartment, I was here last year at the same time for a month's workation. I haven't gone to the same place for vacation since I was a child. This time I made an exception because I was able to find my center so wonderfully here.

The secluded beach 15 minutes walk away, the beautiful rocky coast, the warm sea, the peace and quiet in this small village, the balcony that is perfect for doing yoga with a view of the sea.

In other words, I know the place, I know this apartment and I know the landlord Manolis and his parents. They own the apartment above and spend some time there from time to time.

When I arrived this time, it was like last time: fresh eggs in the fridge, orange juice, fruit, bread, biscuits, coffee, wine, tea, liquor, olive oil, milk, vinegar, and so on. Everything prepared for me. And the best part: in the evening, Manolis' mother brought down a whole casserole dish filled with freshly stuffed vegetables, and it was still a little warm.

Thank you Mama Manolis - What a welcome!

  • Tris Ekklisies

    November 8, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Tris Ekklisies (three churches) is a remote seaside village located 64 km south of Heraklion, in the middle of the wild and inhospitable landscape of the Asterousia Mountains. The area, one of the most remote in Crete, is difficult to access but (as you have already seen) has some amazing beaches. To reach Tris Ekklisies you drive about 10 km down a serpentine road from the village of Paranymfi.

This road leads through the mountains of Asterousia. Half a kilometer after Paranymfi, you have a breathtaking view of the Libyan Sea and Tris Ekklisies.

In summer there is a small supermarket here, now in autumn it is closed. But three times a week a vegetable truck comes down the serpentines to the beach and stands there for a while so that the few villagers can buy their vegetables. To let everyone know that the truck is there, it plays loud music, but check out the footage yourself.

In short: Tris Ekklisies is just wonderful! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Asterousia Mountains

    November 9, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

To get to Tris Ekklisies, I have to drive through the Asterousia Mountains. This is a barren mountain range with only small villages and chapels everywhere. The mountain range separates the Messara Plain from the Libyan Sea.

Roughly speaking, the low mountain range is located in the south of the island in the Heraklion regional district, east of the beach of Matala. The mountain range reaches a height of up to 1231 m with Mount Kofinas.

There are many gorges in the mountain range, the most important being the Agiofarango, named after the monasticism that was practiced in the past in the countless small caves along both sides of it. To the east of the mountain range is the palm forest of Agios Nikitas with Theophrastus palms (Cretan date palm); it is considered the third largest palm forest in Crete.

The area of Asterousia, which covers an area of 27.27 square kilometres from Agiofarango to Kokkinos Pyrgos, has been included in the Natura 2000 network because the area is of ecological and archaeological importance.

I love driving from the plain through the mountains and then looking out over the sea from above and seeing Tris Ekklisies below. 😍

I will make you a short film of the serpentines soon. 🤗

  • Fish, sun and ocean

    November 9, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

At the moment the water is very clear. The wind has also become a little less and therefore the sea and the weather are very suitable for snorkeling.

That's why I watched fish 🐟🤿🐠 today, of course on my private beach. 🤩

So I was here on the beach until 4:30 p.m., swam and snorkeled and then made my way home to grill delicious vegetables in the oven.

What a wonderful Saturday! And now I enjoy my dinner ❤️.

  • What I always bring…

    November 11, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

When I go on a workation and am away from home for one or two months, it is usually in autumn or winter. I am usually far south in Europe and that is where and when the oranges are harvested. 🍊 🍊 🍊

I love freshly squeezed orange juice, 🍊 🥤 so I drink at least one glass a day. When my sweetheart comes over, that's two. The amount of orange peel I produce is immense and my wrists are put to the test.

That's why I always have my electric orange press with me. What I always have with me is my Opinel - I need a good knife 🔪 for cooking!

  • My private bakery 😉

    November 12, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today I worked from the café again, or more precisely from the bakery, *my* bakery 😉, in the small mountain village.

The ancient Greeks there eye me when I sit there with my headphones on and talk into the air. He was in the Ruhr area from 72-76, one of them tells me and invites me to the Greek café.

The boss brings out two more biscuits. I am very happy and thank him. The biscuits are over 1000 years old, says the boss. I hope the recipe, not the biscuits, I say. He laughs loudly.

He and the ancient Greeks already know me well and as we say goodbye the boss says: See you tomorrow!

And today was a very special day because today he showed me his bakery. He delivers not only all over Crete, but also abroad. ❤️

  • Heraklion

    November 13, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today I went to Heraklion, I actually wanted to buy a set of knitting needles 🧶 in sizes 6 and 7 - but neither shop had them.

Of course I strolled through the old town and sat down in a café by the sea. A nice city I must say. I would have to spend a bit more time here to be able to judge it conclusively, but at first glance I still like it as much as I did a few years ago.

But I can't sit here much longer because I've come to pick up my sweetheart from the airport. 🤩

  • Feels like summer

    November 14, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today I took the day off because Rainer arrived yesterday.

Of course we walked to the private beach first thing in the morning. At some point it got too hot for us and we settled down on the balcony for brunch for 2 hours.

Then we walked to the beach again to look at the fish and splash in the waves.

    A midsummer day. ❤️❤️❤️
