    6. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Quite a nice hotel for a conference... my home for the next four days.

Since the room will be ready at 3 p.m. I have some time - maybe jump into the ocean? Or the pool?

  • Guincho-Cresmina dunes

    6. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

I took the bus to Praia da Cresmina and had the pleasure of testing the Portuguese bus. In short: 30 minutes delay seems to be the norm. But I arrived and even got back on time - at times I wasn't so confident that it would work 🤣.

The Cresmina Dune extends over 66 hectares and is a part of the Guincho-Cresmina dune system, located on the edge of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park near Cascais in Portugal. This dune system is considered fairly unique because, as a result of the prevailing northwest winds, the sand from the Guincho and Cresmina beaches eventually returns to the sea 5 km further to the south near Guia, after migrating over the flat, rocky and largely uninhabited area of Cabo Raso.

The Guincho-Cresmina dunes are an unstable system due to the constant drifting of sand particles caused by strong winds. The existence of barriers to movement, such as restaurants and hotels, which narrowed the sand transportation corridors between beaches and dunes, and the tendency of the wind speed to be increasing, led to increased deposits of sediments in areas further away from the coastline, with a consequent reduction in the beach area and potential damage to neighbouring land and homes. Studies show that the Cresmina dune is advancing in a north-south direction by about 10m per year.

Praia da Cresmina is one beach, Praia do Guincho the other. It has a shoreline of approximately 800 metres, has preferred surfing conditions and is popular for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

Strong northern winds are predominant during summer time as well as smaller north-west swells, during winter, the predominant winds are from the east, and swells increase in size, making it a perfect spot for surfing, with multiple beach-breaks providing powerful lefts and rights.

However, since Guincho is situated on the western edge of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and this designation has protected the beach from excessive tourism development, as has the fact that the waves and wind mean it is not suitable as a beach for swimming and sunbathing, particularly for people with young children.

    Good for me ♥️.

  • Cabo da Roca

    7. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today I took the bus again, but this time it was super punctual ♥️ - so obviously there are options to chaos 😉.

The route from Cascais to Cabo da Roca is beautiful and I was very happy that I didn't have to drive myself, but could look out the window. At Cabo da Roca I went for a short hike. I really liked it there, although there were quite some people directly at the lighthouse.

Cabo da Roca is a cape which forms the westernmost point of the Sintra Mountain Range, of continental Europe, and of the Eurasian landmass. Notably the point includes a lighthouse that started operation in 1772.

The cape is within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, 42 kilometres west of the city of Lisbon and in the southwest of Sintra.

The western coast is a mixture of sandy beaches and rocky cliff promontories: around Cabo da Roca, cliffs are more than 100 metres in height, and cut into crystalline rocks, composed of strongly folded and faulted sedimentary units. These forms are disturbed by dikes and small beaches.

Much of the vegetation on this cape is low-lying and adapted to saltwater and windy conditions. Many migratory and marine birds roost temporarily along the cliffs and protected coves of the coastal area.

Quite a nice area for hiking 😍.

  • Quinta da Regaleira

    8. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today I rented a scooter to drive to Sintra during my lunch break. This is possible because the lunch break is an "extended lunch break". It starts at 12:30 and ends at 6 p.m. To compensate that the conference is extended until after 10 p.m.

This meant I could drive to Rivendell on the scooter. Rivendell? Yes, you read that right. This area catapulted me straight to Middle Earth with all the underground labyrinths, grottos, towers, battlements, fountains, waterfalls and endless enchanted corners.

Of course the place is not called Rivendell but Quinta da Regaleira but have a look yourself.

So Quinta da Regaleira is an estate located near the historic centre of Sintra. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra". Along with the other palaces in the area such as the Quinta do Relógio, Pena, Monserrate and Seteais palaces, it is considered one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra.

The property consists of a Romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as "The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire", which is based on the nickname of its best known former owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. The palace was designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini.

  • Moinho Dom Quixote

    8. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Miri told me about this place a while ago, I had even put a heart into googlemaps but had now forgotten about it. Luckily Miri is a very attentive person and wrote: Are you at the Kanban thing in Cascais? If you get the chance to drive out a bit, you should definitely go here: Moinho Dom Quixote. And then I remembered...

Since I rented a scooter today to drive to Sintra during my lunch break, today was the perfect day to drive past here on the way back. I'll explain later why a lunch break is enough for this. In any case, it's great here.

The Moinho Dom Quixote is a cozy old mill with a breathtaking views and extremely delicious food. So my tip for Lisbon or Cascais: Visit this old mill for brunch! They sometimes also have live music in the evening but I'm sure it'll be hard to get a seat then.

  • My suite

    9. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today the conference is over, so if I don't show my suite to you now, it's too late.

Suite? Yes you heard right: suite.

When I arrived at 10:30 they told me that my room will be ready at 3 p.m. Ok, I though, so I first jump into the pool and then I will see.

When I finished swimming I checked my phone and saw that the reception called. When I went there they told me, that my room is already ready. Yeah! So the guy (who turned out to be head of reception) picked up my suitcase from the locker, brought it to "my room" and opened it but...

Two girls stared at me, freezed is a shock by an abrupt interruption while packing their suitcase.

The guy was so embarrassed that not only did he give me an aperol spritz by the pool to pass the time, but when the room still wasn't ready an hour later, he simply put me in the suite - lucky me that he was the head of reception 🤣.

So at 12:30 I was sitting in my suite, trying to fill the three cabinets in my dressing room with my hand luggage 🤣 - 2,5 hours earlier that promised. Needless to say, the others didn't get their standard rooms until 3 p.m.

Well, the mix-up was really worth it.
