Kanchanaburi is world famous for the so-called "Death Road"

During World War II, prisoners of war were forced to build a railway line through the jungle and a bridge over the River Kwai to Burma for the Japanase.
Over 1`000 prisoners of war died of malnutrition and Malaria. Hence the name "Death Road"

Today, the original route can still be traveled by train. The bridge can also be crossed by foot.

However, unlike the film, the original bridge was never made of wood, but always of concrete and steel.
The film was shot largely in ancient Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, 1959
