Information to the journey from Chiang Rai (Thailand) to
    Luang Prabang (Laos):

After passport control in Laos, I recomment taking a boat / ship to Luang Prabang.

The bus ride is an overnight trip [unless you take the 5:00 am bus (book online)]

The overnight bus departs from the Terminal at 5:30 pm (accessible by taxi after passport control) and arrives in Luang Prabang around 1:00 pm the next day.

There are not seats on the bus, only double bunks. If you're unlucky, you'll be squashed next to a stranger; the bunk is only about 80 cm wide, so a bit tight for two people.
The best things to do is buy two tickets next to each other, then you'll have the bed to yourself

There's also no toilet on the bus.

I was told afterward that taking the ship / boat would be more comfortable

  • Kanchanaburi ● Thailand

    Sep 9–14, 2025 in Thailand β‹… 🌧 30 Β°C

Kanchanaburi is world famous for the so-called "Death Road"

During World War II, prisoners of war were forced to build a railway line through the jungle and a bridge over the River Kwai to Burma for the Japanase.
Over 1`000 prisoners of war died of malnutrition and Malaria. Hence the name "Death Road"

Today, the original route can still be traveled by train. The bridge can also be crossed by foot.

    ➑️ There`s a film about it:
"The Bridge on the River Kwai"

However, unlike the film, the original bridge was never made of wood, but always of concrete and steel.
The film was shot largely in ancient Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, 1959
