  • The road to Calgary

    August 23, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We are finished with our Banff leg and are now making our way to Vancouver Island. Today is a 2 hour drive to Calagary and Cabelas.

Calgary is my favorite city in Canada. +- 1 300 000 people and an open city with stacks of parks, hikes, paths, and most importantly 2 hours from Banff.

Everyone here is into their adventure sport - cycle, kayaking, fishing etc etc . The Cabelas, an example of the scale.

  • The "road" from Calgary to Tofino

    August 24, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    What a day.

We started the day in Calgary 0400 and ended the day at 1900 in Tofino.

The trip started with a Westjet plane from Calagary to a wet Vancouver. The next was a drive with our new Jeep-mobile to the harbor and a ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island. Then the 4 and a half hour drive to Tofina.

It was a long but interesting day😍

We also booked a nice house for the 4 day R&R in Tofino. Can't wait to explore Vancouver Island's premier destination.

    September 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Today, we had to say goodbye to Christine and Andrew at the airport😭
    And Canada

We again crossed to Vancouver with the ferry, dropped the kids and crossed the border into the US, late afternoon. We were not sure of the travel, so we ended the day at a hotel close to the highway and a few km north of Seatle.

  • Craig on the Missouri

    September 5, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Today was our 1st day on the Missouri.
Arrived in the afternoon at Craig. Visited some of the access point and tried my luck in the river.... no success😞

    Craig Montana Fly Fishing

There is nothing more quintessential to the Montana fly fishing experience like small, picturesque towns surrounded by scenic mountains and rivers, tucked into green valleys and pastures. Craig, Montana is no exception to this concept. Established by the homesteading miners in 1886 with the town’s first gold claim filed by Warren and Eliza Craig, this town is now home to only a few more amenities than during its pioneer days in history. With a post office, campground, and a couple of fly shops and watering holes in this sweet, little fishing town, a fly fishing trip in Craig, MT provides a truly rugged wild-west adventure unlike almost anywhere else in the countryRead more

  • Ennis and the road to Henry's Fork

    September 6, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Today, we did the 5-hour drive down Montana and into Idaho to Henry's Fork. The next big fishing destination close to Yellow Stone.

Montana is absolutely beautiful and a hunting and fishing paradise. Sue took a few photos as we were driving. The photos have some of the rustic places but Montana is covered in huge farms with impressive dwellings.

What came as a surprise as I didn't see it in my research was a town called Ennis and the Madison River. Ennis is small, quiant and has 6 fly fishing shops🤔. Must be for a reason....
We will try and include it on our return to Vancouver in 2 weeks.

The Anglers lodge in Last Chance is located on the Henry's Fork river and the ideal setting for a Friday evening sundowner.

Can't wait for tomorrow. We have booked a guide for a 0800 till 1600 drift down one of the most idyllic fly fishing spots in the US.

  • Yellowstone day 1

    September 8, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We decided on an early drive to Yellowstone and do a test run for the next 3 days.

The plan is to mix every day with some tourist must see stops and then do one big backcountry haul. Try and go as far as we can and back....

    What a tester 🤩

We did the Grant Prismatic Spring but then linked two trails for a "quick" 16km hike. The Fairy Falls trail started busy but once we hit the Imperial Geyser trail the walk was 👌

The Imperial Geyser was deserted, and we saw the odd hiker. The pictures does not do justice.

All Trails gave us an option to use an added a loop via Goose lake and the lack of tracks on the trail just said adventure😂

25min into the walk Sue spotted the old Bison bull 200m away - his demeanor broadcasted his ownership of this piece of the prairie.

We waited a while, and then he started grazing down our hiking trail. The wind was perfect and Sue and I took sanctuary in the trees. The Bison decided to chill less than 80m away and we had to bundu bash our way to link up with another leg of the trail. All Trail is the best. We will still see hundreds of Bison in the next few days, but this unexpected encounter will be a highlight.

From now on, any Bison will only be another Bison

Today, we did the last big hike.

Two days were spent on Geysers
One day on the open spaces at altitude
Today, the plan was to hike 18km into the Canyon.

The hike to the Seven Mile Hole trail in the Canyon is a gem. We saw 4 people on the 18km hike.
The hike takes you from the rim to the Yellowstone river.

  • Yellowstone to South Dakota

    September 12, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Today we did the big jump from Yellowstone to South Dakotha.

Just after our visit to the Battlefield of Little Bighorn, where Custer did his last stand, the Montana weather gods decided to give us a final goodbye. A proper thunderstorm with 60km gusts.

But back to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The battle was fought along the ridges, steep bluffs, and ravines of the Little Bighorn River, in south-central Montana on June 25-26, 1876. The combatants were warriors of the Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes, battling men of the 7th Regiment of the US Cavalry, along with their Crow, and Arikara scouts. The Battle of the Little Bighorn has come to symbolize the clash of two vastly dissimilar cultures: the buffalo/horse culture of the northern plains tribes, and the highly industrial based culture of the United States.
