  • Capri to Stromboli Punta Lenta

    26 maggio 2021, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Capri to Stromboli Punta Lenta. Stromboli the active volcanic island!
An uneventful crossing however what’s up with this - it’s either 3m waves or 0. With 0 wind. 31 hours of engine time and 41 hour trip. Dodging cargo ships I have learnt to keep alert and to make drastic decisions and directional changes early and look back and sit back and observe the chart to see how close the collision would have been. So much ocean - unbelievable. We were fortunate enough to be able to hike the active volcano.Leggi altro

  • Stromboli to La Castella Italy

    30 maggio 2021, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Stromboli to La Castella Italy. Overnight in a small marina to replenish water for the next step of our journey to our last mooring before the crossing to Albania. Tired, this took 38 hours and looking forward to a good nights sleep. The first complete sleep without shifts in 5 days. 5 days away from Croatia 🔱🥂✨.

A beautiful 5am start and we are on our way👏

  • Castro Italy to Durres Albania

    2 giugno 2021, Albania ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Castro Italy to Durres Albania. Getting to Durres was with a certain amount of relief, firstly because we were getting closer but secondly because we had a clearing agent ready to check us in to the country - so no unknowns unlike most of the rest of this journey. We had the opportunity to squeeze GypsyDjango next to a tanker making our home look tiny!

Durres largely a commercial port was a welcome surprise. A city filled with elderly men riding around on bicycles and the friendliest nation that I have met so far on my travels.

The shock was finding out this country has ruled masks unnecessary due to the 0 new cases of covid.

  • Durres Albania to Bar Montenegro

    3 giugno 2021, Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Durres Albania to Bar Montenegro. So the lack of sleep continues. A stop in Montenegro was necessitated due to the 0 wind encountered crossing from Italy and from Albania resulting in GypsyDjango running on fumes not fuel. Mooring in a bay as it was too dark to enter the harbor at 4am when we arrived, we collapsed for a two hour nap. Waking up we were surprised to find the policía demanding we follow them in to give us a 200 euro fine for the two hours before reporting in. Disheartened we paid, put in diesel and off we went on the last leg to Croatia. As we entered Croatian territory the tears were pouring and the relief immense.

I had such fond memories of Montenegro and will not let this experience distract me.

  • Bar Montenegro to Dubrovnik Croatia

    4 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Bar Montenegro to Dubrovnik Croatia. Watching sunrise and sunset is always the reward of night crossings. Arriving at 4am in the morning we were greeted by the Croatian customs control and I almost hugged them. So excited to finally be here. I have 3 homes - Cape Town, Spain and Croatia. And arriving here feels like coming home. It was another trip of pure engine without wind but sometimes when you are at this level of exhaustion the predictability under engine helps and all you need to worry about is avoiding collisions with night fishing vessels.

I have to express how grateful I am for the accuracy of gps. Navigating GypsyDjango in the pitch black through the narrow channels between the islands - tired at that time in the morning and putting all your faith in the screen in front of you was a different experience to the large expanses of water we have sailed thus far.

After our not quite express checkin at the border we sailed our boat to a safe bay we know for its easy mooring, dropped anchor and went to sleep.

  • Trogir Marina to Solta

    10 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

A quick thunderstorm and impressive lightening accompanied our trip to Solta. We are anchored in Sesula Bay, a picturesque place and a short sail from Trogir. It’s a special day because today is our anniversary of arriving in Croatia in 2020 1 year ago today and beginning our life as liveaboards. 4100nm later.Leggi altro

  • Solta To Pakleni

    11 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Solta To Pakleni. Leaving with our wonderful visitors - we engined in perfectly calm waters to Pakleni. After the storm of the previous day, this was a welcome event. A stop to float in the middle of the ocean and let the 8 men hang off a rope while I drove GypsyDjango was a lot of fun. Arriving in wonderful Pakleni emitted many sounds of wonder at this ideal and pristine bay. It was then time for Kevin to head up the mast to replace our boom topping lift and code 0 halyard which resulted in some perfect photos 🔱👏💛. Somehow the work on a boat never ends.Leggi altro

  • Pakleni to Hvar to Trogir

    12 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

A long day out. A sail to discover the old town of Hvar and replenish food stocks and then onward to Trogir. I had forgotten what long days out were like. Leaving at 8am and arrival at 8pm. The past three days could not have been more different from a sailing aspect. Today strong wind carried us along our way. Tomorrow we say farewell to our mad and fun visitors and catch up on some sleep 😉Leggi altro

  • Sveta Fumija to Solta Uvala Necujam

    15 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Why have we not been here before? This place is magical. A quick sail to a bay while small in size - it well known and famous for its snorkelling activities. Solta an island only 19km’s long and 4km wide, is known as the green island and the name means unripe fig 😊. Solta has 2 easily accessible wrecks to explore as well as many underground caves. In the bay of Necujam, the Kontessa - a 25m yacht sank only 10 years ago and is at a depth of 3m.

The diversity of an island such of this reminds me why I love this Country.

  • Solta to Split, Bol, N Hvar Rt Polce

    18 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Split to Hvar. A long day out. It’s not only the 36nm but the multiple destinations along route. 8 hours sailing but 11 hours duration. It’s quite humorous how quickly we forget the 3 day and night crossings. Bol the most perfect beach, the Zlatini Horn was not worth the hours and diesel. Note to self. Bol is a no. The night spot undiscovered by the many tourists in Croatia was a great find. Croatia definitely has two sides to it, the beautiful bays with too many people and the undiscovered bays only frequented by locals which do not offer restaurants access to land or shops.Leggi altro

  • Rt Polce Hvar to Pakleni via Stari Grad

    19 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Leaving this quiet bay and heading to a town which we have heard of but never before visited. Stari Grad is very special- beautifully maintained with flowers and cobbled streets. I finally had the feeling of being a tourist which has become more difficult of late. It’s strange but still miss Arenys de Mar and the predictability of waking up each day in the marina with our friends close by - ready for a drink or two or three. And let’s not even get started on missing darling SA with our precious family and friends. I have to constantly remind myself to be in the moment. Shocking I am and without gratitude but at least I acknowledge it 😊. Tonight’s bay is one of our favorites Uvala Tarsce on Pakleni.Leggi altro

  • Pakleni to Vis -Stiniva to bay Smricevic

    20 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Pakleni to Vis - Stiniva and to Smricevica. I definitely cannot pronounce some of these names. Heading to Vis - a supposedly quieter island within the archipelago was a mistake. So, similar to Bol, Vis is on demand only. And discouraged. It’s an island at a distance from the rest of the split islands and it literally hosts one good bay, Uvala Ruda. Vis for some reason is over marketed as the must see destination. There is a submarine bunker which you can experience launching yourself from - around 20 meters to the water I think. There is a blue cave which is now a two to three hour queue of speedboats with charged access in order to visit for 1 whole minute. No swimming? I remember 2015 having access via our dinghy and being able to swim within the cave. The Island which was primarily a naval location has two small towns that are not as picturesque as on Hvar or Trogir. Before I sound too dismissive we did have the opportunity of visiting Stiniva a beautiful phenomenon with a beach behind cliffs which is quite spectacular. However later having two failed attempts at finding bays with sand on the south side of the island and eventual anchoring on rock was not great. This necessitated having to tie two supporting ropes to either side of the bay to augment our safety for the evening. Ok Vis off the list 😉.Leggi altro

  • Smricevica to Komiza, to Uvala Okljucna

    21 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Bad bay Smricevica to Komiza, to Uvala Okljucna. After our horrible rock bay we were ready to head to Komiza for an ice cream and yogurt- the necessities one has and then to another rocky bay in the north of Vis. Again some fancy mooring and shore lines to combat the lack of anchor hold was required in this bay. A pretty bay however, and pleasant for the day.Leggi altro

  • Vis to Pakleni

    22 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Vis Uvala Okljucna to Submarine Bunker and on to Pakleni Veli Duboka. An early exit from Vis back to Pakleni. Finally today Croatia provided wind to enable us to sail. So over the sound of an engine. Imagine climbing in your car to drive three or four hours to change location every day. You just wouldn’t do it. Certainly not without wind but at this moment that’s the name of the game. I remember when we arrived in Croatia last year we ping ponged between the islands keen to explore each new bay and build up this wonderful list of perfect locations. Well today we added another wonderful location to the list driven by an unusual wind dictating shelter on the north of Pakleni and what a great find it was. Picnic virgin mojito drinks on the shore made it even more ideal. Yes you heard me - virgin. I must be the only sober skipper out there. Enjoying this break from alcohol since Spain. However even more enjoying the concept of tequila with Becs when she arrives in July 🙌 what a good way to break the fast 😉.Leggi altro

  • Pakleni to Solta

    23 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Pakleni Veli Duboka To Solta Necujam. Returning to a beautiful bay and as its midweek the charter boats are on a different schedule allowing this bay a respite from incompetent sailors. Speaking of that we had the opportunity to meet Stephen and Kerry who bought a boat and moved to Croatia from Australia and it was great to share our experiences gained in the past year. Mr Mojito man arrived to offer drinks to Amy and Edward. Still not drinking Kev made me a virgin cocktail.Leggi altro

  • Trogir Marina to Uvalica Polijica

    25 giugno 2021, Croazia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

An hour out of Trogir Marina - with a sparkly clean boat we have headed to a bay to drop anchor and meet with a boat person. This is one of those people who live in Croatia and provide parts and services from a location on the ocean from the back of a dinghy. It’s a different life. The bay is a great find and just perfect. 40 degree heat at 8pm and an attempt to set up the tent outdoors to try and get some fresh air and coolness during the night. Still too hot. Time to source a mosquito net somewhere 😭Leggi altro
