    8 mei 2019, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

    Off we go!!
While Rouven doesn't mind flying, I'm not particularly excited about 8 hours up in the air...
However, in the meantime you can have a look at our route for the first half of our trip - we're spending the next 20 days driving around Canada's east side.Meer informatie

  • Touch-down

    8 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    Hello Canada !!
After a smooth flight, Montreal welcomed us with beautiful sunshine ☀️
Our lovely AirBnb is located in „Hochelaga“, north from the city center. We went for a first stroll and found that the architecture here is pretty diverse. Can’t wait to see more of Montreal but after being awake for 21 hours, we’re in need of a goodnight sleep first 😬Meer informatie

  • Mont-Royal and NBA

    9 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Today we walked up “Mont-Royal” and had a stunning view over Montreal! Walking through “Parc du Mont-Royal” we noticed that compared to back home, a lot of trees here are not green yet. (It feels more like winter rather than spring)
For dinner I had my first Poutine (sooo delicious 😋) at a sports bar, where we also watched the NBA Playoffs game Toronto Raptors vs Philadelphia 76ers.

  • Au revoir Montreal!

    12 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

During our last two days in Montreal we had a day of both - constant rain and beaming sunshine.

We spent the first day catching up on some sleep and walking around the area which was not too far from the Olympic Stadium.

On Saturday we explored “Miles End”, an area with cute cafés, second-hand shops and street art. On our way back we had our first Mc Donald’s meal 😇 and were surprised to find Poutine on the menu. (For those who don’t know - Poutine is a traditional Canadian dish with fries, gravy and cheese 😋)

Yesterday we finally picked up our sweet Maple, a Chevrolet Spark which will take us to our next stops. 🚗💨

    Sooo overall Montreal was..
... a wild mix of architectural styles
... not very busy for a city of this size (maybe due to the time of the year or because is a massive city and relatively few people living here)
... definitely worth a visit if your planning a trip to the east coast!

  • Salut Quebec!

    12 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    What a beauty!
After a 3 hour drive we arrived at my personal favorite (so far).

Our AirBnb is great and just a 15min walk to Quebec Old Town. Even though we planned on a short walk around the area, we ended up walking through the park „Plains of Abraham“ all the way to „La Citadelle de Quebec“ where we had a stunning view on „Le Château Frontenac“ (The Fairmont Hotel). The red hotel is one of Quebec’s landmarks and is located up the hill, overlooking Saint Lawrence River.Meer informatie

  • Old Quebec

    13 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Day 2 in Quebec is definitely worth two posts.

The first one dedicated to Quebec’s old town which is simply beautiful!
Just when you thought you discovered the cutest place in town, you turn around a corner and find yourself in an even prettier little road.
One of the most impressive sights is “Le Château Frontenac” (completed in 1893) with a wide wooden sun deck below.

  • Montmorency Falls

    14 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

What a day! Part 2 of our day took place just outside Quebec..

After a quick lunch at home, we drove 20min up north to see Montmorency Falls. With 83m, they are 30m higher than Niagara Falls 👀
I felt super brave for walking the bridge right above the falls (preparing myself for more walks full of adrenaline on Canada’s west side).Meer informatie

  • Ottawa

    17 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

2 1/2 days in Canada’s capital well spent!

After a beer in Ottawa’s oldest pub on Wednesday evening, we did a lot of walking on Thursday. Besides Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court and Notre Dame, we saw some pretty cool art work at the National Gallery.
Oh and we had a delicious Beaver Tail - yummm 😋

Tomorrow we’re off to do some serious hiking at Algonquin Park (and NO WiFi). So we’ll catch you next week from Toronto. 👋🏼

  • Algonquin Park - Arrival and Day 1

    18 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

    Adventure mode on!
After seeing some of Canada’s biggest cities, we’re in Algonquin Park for three full days.
(Nature, nature, nature and no WiFi!)

We arrived at Bongo’s Lodge (our AirBnb) on Saturday evening and decided to get pizza in one of the three restaurants in Whitney (yes, the village is tiny). The owner decided he wanted us to learn how to make pizza ourselves and taught us how “Whitney Pizza” is made. (The secret is tons of cheese)
Saturday night is also music night at Bongo’s, a slightly crazy guy who is also some kind of maire here?!😄

After the first night in our lovely, cosy room we went for our first hikes in the park.
Booth’s Rock (5.1 km), Lookout (2.1 km) and Beaver Pond (2.0 km)
All of them have scenic lookouts but the Beaver Pond was my personal favourite! Even though we had a bit of rain that day, we had wonderful first day.

  • Algonquin Park - Day 2

    20 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

In order to prepare us for an approximately 6 hour walk on day 3, we chose Track & Tower (7.5 km) on day 2. Although it was a fun walk with scenic lookout it was a real challenge too, as some parts of the path were flooded and super muddy.

We ended the day with Spruce Bog Boardwalk (1.5km) (nice and relaxing 😌).

Update at the end of day 2: no moose spotted :(

  • Algonquin Park - Day 3

    21 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

    Last day in Algonquin!

We were very excited for our longest trail so far, especially since the sun came out and made the park look even more beautiful 😍
Also, Mizzy Lake Trail is known to have the best possibilities to see wildlife which made it even more interesting! Even though it was a veery long hike it was one of my favourite, as it took us through so many different sceneries.

After a short break at Canoe Lake, we ended our Algonquin experience with Hardwood Lookout (1.0 km). (A path for those who want a nice view but no hiking)

Throughout the trip we were lucky to see birds, beaver, deer, a large snapping turtle aaaand (finally on the last day!!) a moose - woohooo!

Our stay at Algonquin was absolutely magical and prefect for relaxing your mind!

  • Stop No. 5 - Toronto

    23 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

Last stop on Canada‘s east side!

The first day was suuper relaxing and full of vintage stores, coffee breaks and chilling at the park. We walked around Kensington Market, an area close to China town with tons of cute restaurants, bars and cafés.
On our way we came through Graffiti Alley (as you can see 😁📸).

Oh and obviously we didn’t miss out on CN tower..

  • Niagara Falls

    24 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    Woooow 😯

On our second day in Toronto, we drove down to Niagara Falls which are definitely pretty impressive!

Although I‘m aware that it‘s a tourist attraction and a spot millions of visitors come each year, I was surprised by the „fun park vibe“ the surrounding has. Other than you might assume, Niagara Falls are between two cities (🇨🇦&🇺🇸) and not surrounded by pure nature. I can’t speak for the American side but as you walk into the main street right next to the falls in Canada, it’s full of lights, sounds, arcades and other attractions.

At the end of the day we had to say goodbye to sweet Maple (our 🚗), as we‘ll get on a plane in a few days over to Calgary.

  • Bye Toronto!

    26 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    We the north!
This phrase of Toronto‘s NBA team was written everywhere Saturday night when they played back home. The vibe was similar to a soccer World Cup final in Germany and after the team won, the whole city went crazy. This was definitely one of our favourite experiences so far 😃

We spent the next and last day on Canada’s east side in Toronto’s distillery district. This part of the city is full of art shops, restaurants and is the perfect place to spend a Sunday.

Now all bags are packed again for our flight to Calgary!

  • Oh Calgary!

    27 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    To be honest ...
we haven’t heard a lot/the nicest things about the city. This stop was primarily planned as it is close to Banff.

The truth is, you don’t need a full week to explore everything. However, it is sooooo nice here!!!!
Downtown with cool sky scrapers, loads of stunning parks and buzzy districts with restaurants and bars.

Rouven and I are definitely recommending this stop before heading to Banff.

  • Banff - Arrival and Day 1

    29 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    We arrived in paradise!
Banff National Park is exactly what you imagine it - but much better!

The first night wie stayed at the Samesun Hostel wich was .. short (6 person dorm with 1 snoring and one talking in his sleep). However, we were rewarded with pancakes and muffins for breakfast. 😋

We were lucky to reserve the last spot on Tunnel Mountain campground for the next three days, where we’ll sleep in our lovely 🚐 (we named him Bagel).

In the afternoon of day 1, we did a shorter (but intense) hike up Tunnel Mountain which offers a wonderful view of Banff city and the surrounding mountains.

  • Banff - Day 2

    31 mei 2019, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

The first night in our new „hotel“ was not us comfortable as we hoped. Ohh but when we woke up the view was definitely worth it!

As none of us has travelled and slept in a car for a longer time before, these first days are all about learning and improving. So we decided to step up our game and buy an inflatable mattress.

Our hike for the day was up AND down Sulphur Mountain, a 5.5km trail, 700m total elevation gain to 2281m!!
My face looked a tiny bit as if I would faint any minute but we made it all the way up and it was sooooo worth it 😍

Oh and the perfect end of the day was a visit at Banff Hot Springs!

  • Lake Louise - Day 2

    3 juni 2019, Canada ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

    Wow wow wow 😮
This is one of the most beautiful places we’ve both ever been to!

The first part of the way led us up to the “Little Beehive” where we had the most incredible view on Lake Louise and Mirror Lake.
Our next stop was Lake Agnes which was nearly completely frozen (in June!). After a short break at the super cute Tea House, we made our way back down to the lake shore.

In total we walked 17,9 km and 133 floors that day and luckily didn’t meet a grizzly in the way.

  • Yoho National Park

    4 juni 2019, Canada ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Soo.. taking suggestions by locals into consideration and in view of the weather forecast, we decided to change our route slightly.
Instead of driving up to Jasper, we took a left turn and are now driving through Yoho National Park.

Here we’re staying one night in Field, a town which doesn’t even have a grocery store. However, Emerald Lake and the Wapta Falls are close by and that is reason enough to stop!

  • Golden

    7 juni 2019, Canada ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Out of Yoho, just before Glacier National Park lies the city of Golden. We stayed here for 3 nights and due to lots of rain we took it a bit slow. Nevertheless, we hiked to Bear Creek Falls in Glacier, walked around Cedar Lakes and checked out one of the local Breweries in town.

Tomorrow we‘re off to Revelstoke, to see Mount Revelstoke National Park 🏞

  • Revelstoke

    10 juni 2019, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

As Revelstoke wasn‘t on our original tour plan, we weren’t too sure what to expect. For everyone who is planning a trip to this side of Canada, you should definitively stop here for a few days!
There are so many cool things you can do in Revelstoke and the city itself is super cute too.

On our first day we drove up Mount Revelstoke, to enjoy a fantastic view of Columbia river and walked to the „Broken Bridge“. As it started to rain in the evening we decided to watch Rocketman (highly recommended!) at Roxy Theatre Revelstoke (first opened in 1938).

The next day the sun came back ☀️ and we had a day full of exciting things planned. First we took the Gondola up the mountain to ride “The Pipe”.
After lunch we walked “Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk” and “Giant Cedars Boardwalk” before relaxing at Canyon Hot Springs. 😎

  • Kamloops

    12 juni 2019, Canada ⋅ 🌫 22 °C

On our way to Whistler we stopped in Kamloops for two days and enjoyed the first days of summer here.
As we drove from Revelstoke to Kamloops we were surprised how the landscape changed from mountains and woods to hills and grasslands.
Kamloops itself is a paradise for everyone who loves biking and sports in general.
Rouven and I spent an hour at the driving range of Mt. Paul Golf course, relaxed in the park by the river and strolled around town.

  • Whistler

    13 juni 2019, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

On our way to Whistler the scene changed back to high mountains and dark green forests. We came by more beautiful lakes and stunning views.

As we slept in our car the last 12 nights, we decided to treat ourselves to two nights in a hotel.
(Right in town, with a swimmingpool!!)

You can definitely feel the sports spirit in Whistler - in summer it’s a dream for every biker, in winter a skiing paradise.
We walked to Lost Lake, in Lost Lake Park which feels like walking through a forest in the middle of the city. There we went for our first swim in a lake (up to that point all the lakes and rivers were toooo cold).

Oh and while our time here, the Toronto Raptors won the NBA Championship 🏀🎉
