    Christchurch, New Zealand

    November 12, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

I checked out the International Antarctic Center while the girls rested up at the Jucy Snooze (yes, we hit 3 of their 4 service areas: camper van rental, cruise and snooze...they do make it convenient!). Very cool (literally!) facility with lots of interactive exhibits. I got a chance to feel the effects of an Antarctic ice storm...brrrrrr...and got to ride up front in a Hagglund. What a ride! We're off to Oz very early tomorrow and then catching the boat for the reef dives. So excited!Read more

Orana Wildlife Park - Part 2
Lion Encounter!!! Lexi had the brilliant idea to get back to Christchurch in time to fit in this up-close encounter with a pride of lions. We're in a cage on the back of a truck...can't get any closer than this (without being a keeper or losing an appendage or two). Amazing!!Read more

Orana Wildlife Park - Part 1
We left Kaikora early in the morning so that we could check out New Zealand's only open range animal reserve. Great park with lots of focus on education...very cool to see some of these guys close up in more natural setting!Read more

  • Day15

    Kaikoura, New Zealand

    November 11, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Today we're headed back to Christchurch, where we have a date with lions (and tigers, but no bears) and a visit with a friend of Amy's. Check out the morning view on our way out of town!

  • Day14

    Kaikoura, New Zealand

    November 10, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

We decided on lighter day today...drove to Kaikoura to see the sights on this coastal "eco" town. Lots of sea life tours here, as well as a thriving seal colony right outside of town. Had a blast tramping along the coastline and seeing the seals hanging out along the rocks. We're going to stay here tonight and relax, catch up on laundry (my surf tumbling adventure cut into my wardrobe!) and give Alexis time to rest as she fights off a nasty head cold. Tomorrow, we're off to Christchurch, where our caravan road trip begins and ends.Read more

  • Day13

Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

    November 9, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Abel Tasman NP definitely lived up to its reputation as amazingly beautiful. We took the Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle out to Medlands Beach and spent a couple of hours hiking and relaxing on the gorgeous beach. Best spot ever for a picnic...and we found a few friends along the way.Read more

  • Day12

    Charleston, New Zealand

    November 8, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Great stop at Mitchell's Gully Gold Mine!! Amy and I donned the headlamps and went exploring all of the old mining tunnels and equipment. There are a few "what the heck is that?" moments and one "which way now?" moment, but we loved every dark, dank meter of it! And found glow worms!Read more

  • Day12

    Punakaiki, New Zealand

    November 8, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 55 °F

Penguin hunting stop just north of Pancake Rocks Blowholes. No penguins, but the surf was awesome and led to the next adventure...accidental wave surfing. So I got a little soaked by a huge, surprise wave...it was fun and worth the wet clothes, shoes, bruises and scrapes. I'd do it again (but maybe get off the rocks a little sooner next time).Read more

Pancake Rocks Blowholes....rocked!! The striations on the rocks were fascinating and we had fun trying to time the pics for the blow holes. I took about a million pictures...here are a few of my favs.

  • Day11

    Hokitika, New Zealand

    November 7, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

We spent the night in Hokitika, a very cool little beach town! Started off the morning with a walk on the gorgeous beach, complete with Whitebait fisherwomen. Whitebait is famous here...primarily made into patties. I got to see some freshly netted - think tiny, white eels with big eyes and you get the picture.

Next stop was the awe-inspiring Hokitika Gorge. I could have spent hours perched on my rock by the turquoise blue river.
