    Cable Car Ride

    After hiking around Valle de la Luna, next was a ride on the Cable Car system. La Paz used to have trams to get around the city, but it was outgrown. Trying to build a subway or sky train was impractical, so they built a cable car system of 10 routes, as mass transportation around La Paz. It has also become a major tourist attraction as the best way to see this AMAZING city. So colorful and vibrant.

    La Paz H4 #2024

    La Paz H4 #2024 (not the real number, just what year) 🙂

    Just ran the highest elevation hash in my life . . . 10,735 feet in Bolivia with the La Paz Highest H3 (LPH4) . . . eclipsing the trail I set in Ecuador for the Quito H3 a couple years ago at 9,872 feet.

    For those unfamiliar with elevation, La Paz is the highest government seat (capital) at 11, 942 feet, while Quito is number 2 at 9350 feet. Since we were a little ways out of town, we dropped down to 10,735 feet today, but still very high. I have also run with the Baku H3 in Azerbaijan a couple years ago, the lowest capital city in the world, at 57 feet below sea level. What a contrast, breathing alone makes hashing in Bolivia a bit of a challenge.

    The La Paz H4 has a long history dating back to 1988, more on that later, and has gone dormant on a few occasions. The last time they ran a hash was back in July 2022, so it has been a while. I have been in contact with Handy Job for nearly 2 years asking when the next hash would be, and got little encouragement for a visit. This time, I got a glimmer of hope, and said OK . . . I am coming in Dec, and we agreed on a trail for 14 Dec . . . and so it was today. Trail was beautiful, with mountains in every direction. We had only a hare and 4 hounds at the start, but we picked up one more, a virgin, to make it 5 hounds. Trail basically made a lap through the underbrush around the local zoo, and back to our hare, Handy Job’s house.
    We had a rousing circle, and then drove back into La Paz for dinner. Another great day on the hash, for my 128th country to hash in.    Okumaya devam et

    Santiago H3 #276

    I am staying near University de Santiago (Chile) in the middle of town, and the hash was way out on the eastern edge of the city. Last week in La Paz, the city was all ups and down, and the trail was mostly flat. Today, Santiago is mostly flat (with huge mountains on the outskirts to the east and west), and trail was all uphill for the first half, and all downhill for the second half. We had beautiful scenery the whole way, an excellent trail. Upon finishing, and a couple of rehydrating beverages, we circled up for some fun. After all the customary down downs, we adjourned to the pool for a refreshing splash, followed by a most excellent BBQ. Good times on the hash. On the other hand . . .

    It has been one heck of a year, so many great hashing stories, but also so many losses (more than any year before). Among some other personal things, today my wallet got pickpocketed for the first time ever. Long story, but short version is . . . got on a crowded subway, traveled to first stop, then soon after moving again . . . train screeches to a halt. We sit for 10 minutes with no ventilation, then finally move on to next stop. Everyone is directed to get out. We are waiting for the next train, and about 1/3 are able to get on. Next train, another third, and then while waiting for the 3rd train, I notice my zippered pocket is open and my wallet it gone. Some little sneaky bastard got me. Fortunately, before leaving today, I took out most of the non-essential cards and cash, so only lost about 40,000 pesos (US$40), credit card (now frozen with two suspect charges), and my driver’s license (good thing I can get that replaced next week back in Florida). BUT . . . all’s well that ends well. Stay thirsty my friends.    Okumaya devam et

    Taco Tuesday (Christmas Eve) H3

    Arrived back in Tampa on Tuesday morning, and my stolen wallet caused a series of events to unfold, which were mostly unpleasant, but pushing all that aside . . . by evening I decided a nice run around in the dark would make all things right. And it did.

    We had about a dozen hashers turn up on Christmas Eve, for this most excellent trot around St Pete in the dark. Only about 3 of us were runners, so ended up doing a lot of checking, and as you can see, I explored many turns that ended up not being the right way to go . . . but that's what makes hashing so much fun . . . playing the game, finding trail, exploring.

    After all had returned, we had a short circle, then dug into taco heaven, stuffing our faces on good eats. Once our bellies were sated, we circled up once again 'round the fire, and enjoyed a blissful White Christmas gift exchange. Always a fun time with hashers. THEN, back for a nice hot shower and 10 hours of sleep to catch up after flying the red eye last night from Chile.
