Waltzing Mathilda

heißt ein altes australisches Volkslied.
Das wusste ich noch nicht, dachte eigentlich immer, das Lied gehört zu Rod Stuart.

In dem Lied geht es um die Leidenschaft zur Freiheit. Ein alter „Swagman“ ertränkt sicher lieber in einem Billabong, als dass er seine Freiheit aufgibt.
Ein Billabong ist ein Wasserloch im australischen Outback. Ein Swagman ist ein Mann auf Wanderschaft – was sich eleganter anhört, als der Begriff Landstreicher. Man könnte aber auch sagen: der Mann ist auf der Walz; etwas was auch in Deutschland zur alten Handwerker Tradition gehört.

Der „Swag“ ist ein Gepäckstück in Form einer Rolle, in dem Volkslied ‚Matilda‘ genannt.

Ob zu dieser Zeit Waltzing Matilda von dem australischen Dichter Banjo Peterson geschrieben wurde ist umstritten.
Unbestritten ist jedoch, dass es am 6. April 1895 im Rahmen eines Empfangs für den Premierminister von Queensland in Winton uraufgeführt wurde. Dass die Straße auf der ich walze „Matilda Highway“ heißt, belegt die Bedeutung des kleinen Volksliedes.

Beinahe wäre das Lied sogar zur australischen Nationalhymne geworden
.... und hier an Bord wurde zur Einstimmung jede Lektion oder Ausflugsvorstellung mit diesem Lied eingeleitet....
