    Abbey of St Augustine is founded in Bristol

    In 1140 a local merchant, Robert Fitzharding began to establish a monastery on the site known today as Bristol Cathedral. The monastery was a community of “canons regular” – priests who lived a disciplined life under a rule or pattern based on that of St Augustine of Hippo.
