    Perth Airport

    September 30, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Just waiting for the second leg of our journey. Left Esperance on Friday, a couple of days in Perth catching up with family and friends oh and sleep after a hectic couple of weeks organising our life.

  • First Day Out

    October 2, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Drove into the city of Dublin. We wanted to go to the Trinity Library but it was closed today. Open tomorrow so will do the Hop-on Hop-off bus tour tomorrow.

I like street lamps so you will see plenty as we go round.

As we have free km’s on our hire car we will do our best to cover as much of the 70,273 sq km as possible (Esperance Shire is 42,537)

Beautiful old cottage with lovely grounds and Tara the dog showed us around in the drizzling rain.

  • Glendalough Monastic Site

    October 13, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We parked at the top lake and wandered down to the monastic site. You will see the nails on the boardwalk and sometimes they had chicken wire on it to stop it being so slippery. You will see in one of the pictures where a couple of tombstones had fallen onto themselves you walk underneath to receive protection from the dead.
One headstone says died at 106 in 1750 !!
    Deer walk amongst headstones.

  • National Botanic Garden - Kilmacurragh

    October 14, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

The greatest collection of Himalayan rhododendrons in Europe - 🤨 a shame we were too late for flowers. Although Ireland was neutral in WWII the owner at the time Charles Budina turned it into a Hotel and had Hitler-Jugend and Nazi Party functions.
Check out how big the Holy bush/TREE can grow 😱 they are everywhere here.

A guided walking tour around the City of the Vikings
Lovely town and managed not to buy or touch horrendously expensive Waterford crystal during our visit there although was exquisite

  • Glen of the Downs

    October 27, 2024 in Ireland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

This was a place that the locals lived in the trees for 5 years to stop the building of the freeway.

The Glen of the Downs is a 2km long wooded glacial valley with steep sides rising to almost 250m. It contains a designated Nature Reserve as well as a Special Area of Conservation. The valley was formed by the meltwater from a massive ice sheet. The rocks forming the sides of the valley are of the same quartzite as the two Sugarloaf hills.

Glen of The Downs Nature Reserve is also known as Bellevue. The Reserve is the finest example of oak wood of it’s type close to Dublin. It is largely Sessile Oak with an understorey of Holly and a dense carpet of Woodrush, Bilberry and Heather. The woods abound in birdlife and 21 breeding species have been recorded here. Each bird species occupies a distinct niche in the woodland having different feeding and nesting habits. Some, like the Jay, have a varied diet which includes berries and nuts while others such as Treecreepers and Wrens have largely insect based diet. The Wood Warbler builds on the ground, whereas the Woodpigeon prefers a platform of twigs up in the tree canopy. Birds such as the Blackbird and the Robin, are fiercely territorial and defend their feeding and nesting patch by singing and chasing off intruders.

  • Guy Fawkes Night

    November 1, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Guy Fawkes Night and a drink at The Castle Pub in Bedford.
also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain, involving bonfires and fireworks displays. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605 O.S., when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. The Catholic plotters had intended to assassinate Protestant king James I and his parliament. Celebrating that the king had survived, people lit bonfires around London. Months later, the Observance of 5th November Act mandated an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.Read more
