Ich war viel unterwegs die letzten Tage. Unter anderem beim Bolsena See noch in der Stadt Bolsena, Orvieto und der mittelalterlichen Stadt Bagnoregio. Dort fährt eine Fußgängerbrücke in das Dorf auf dem Felsen. Alle der Städte waren sehr schön. Möglich, dass ich jetzt nicht mehr so oft hintereinander hochladen kann. After leaving Pitilgiano, we took a day trip to Civita di Bagnoregio. While this was a destination Dave was looking forward to, he was surprised how small Bagnoregio was. After climbing the big foot bridge to get to town, it was basically just a 250 yd main street with a few side alleys. Apparently at one point there were only 10 residents who called it Civita di Bagnoregio their permanent home.

The main cathedral of Bagnoregio, Chiesa di San Donato, had some event. Locals were decorating the floor with flowers. Dave and Emily looked online, but we couldn't find any explanation about what was happening. So the pictures will have to speak for themselves.Read more

I was in Antigua, Guatemala for Semana Santa (Easter week) and they did this all over the city. Very cool. And a lot of work!

Nice thanks for sharing. I'm blown away by both the dedication to the church and the frescos. makes me wonder why we don't have local artists contribute to our church's back in the states.

Auf dem Weg nach Orbetello machen wir erst einen Abstecher nach Civita di Bagnoregio. Nachbarn auf dem Campingplatz haben uns dies empfohlen. Müsse man gesehen haben. Mitten im Dorf finden wir zwei Parkplätze, wo wir mit unserem Fahrzeug Platz haben und laufen los. Und laufen und laufen. Wir sind ein bisschen enttäuscht, das soll diese tolle Künstlerstadt sein? Doch plötzlich entdecken wir ein Schild Civita und gehen weiter geradeaus. Da ist sie nun, diese tolle Stadt auf dem Felsen!

Durch Erdbeben und Erdrutsche und auch durch die schlechte Zugänglichkeit hatte Civita in den vergangenen Jahrzenten immer mehr Einwohner verloren, bis 1990 nur noch ca. 17 ältere Menschen dort wohnten. Zum Glück entdeckten ein paar reichere Römer, Aussteiger und Naturliebhaber den Ort und baute und renovierten die verlassenen Bauruinen zu einem grossen Teil. Auch wurde eine Fussgängerbrücke gebaut.

Wir kaufen uns 2 Tickets à EUR 5 und gehen über die Fussgängerbrücke. Beim Besichtigen der wirklich hübschen Stadt denken wir, das sollten mehrere Bergdörfer tun, die wir in den vergangenen Monaten besichtigt haben. Renovieren, Eintritt verlangen, ein paar hübsche Restaurants eröffnen, das würde die Städte retten, Einwohner ein Einkommen sichern und Touristen anziehen.

Auf dem retourweg zum Camper ist es schon sehr heiss und wir freuen uns, bald mit dem klimatisierten Fahrzeug weiterfahren zu können.
Eine weitere Empfehlung der Nachbarn war Grotte die Castro. Schon von weitem sehen wir die Stadt auf dem Hügel, entschliessen uns aber nur daran vorbeizufahren, denn erstens ist es schon fast Mittag und schon recht heiss und zweitens möchten wir ja am Meer dann noch ein schönes Plätzchen finden. From ghost towns (like the last post from our morning stop) to near ghost towns like this, the internet is great for finding places you know nothing about!
Civita di Bagnoregio was a dying town brought back by tourism and the internet. One of the most photographed villages in Italy, you can only reach this hill town on foot over a single footbridge. This also facilitated making it the first town in Italy that charges an admission. With 180,000 visitors last year, it keeps the towns TEN residents free of taxes and worries about eroding away!
We walked up on a hot (26 degree) October afternoon, and wonder what it would be like mid-summer at 30+ degrees and 5 times the tourists (at least!). After our solo sojourn in the morning this definitely feels more like a tourist site, but is still manageable and lovely. The first view of the town is every bit as spectacular as the photos, and the 20 minute walk over is spectacular, with breathtaking views (and steps in places!) to this living 2700 year old hamlet first inhabited by the Etruscans. Now, on Unesco's list of tentative new sites, it has suffered from 'downsizing' of a different sort. As recently as 2015 landslides took several medieval buildings off the plateau to the ravine below! What's left is amazing! We visited and old olive mill and see how the ancients methods aren't always the best however romantic they may seem! After one our delicious Italian breakfasts at our B&B we hit the road again. First up for today was a visit to Civita di Bagnoregio, a small town in the Province of Viterbo in central Italy. This whole area is beautiful and just what I imagined Italy to be. Green rolling hills covered with a patchwork of fields in different stages of harvesting, sun shining and another brilliant blue sky.

And we are getting better at this driving on the wrong side of the road gig. We had a couple of lapses when we would realise we were driving Aussie style but thankfully that was on empty roads so no near misses. We made it in one piece again.

Civita di Bagnoregio sits on top of a plateau, like an island, and is in constant danger of destruction as the edges of the plateau collapse due to erosion. It was founded by Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago but by the end of the 17th century the bishop and the municipal government were forced to move to Bagnoregio because of a major earthquake that accelerated the old town's decline.

It is now known in Italian as La città che muore, The Dying Town. Civita has only recently been experiencing a tourist revival and is only accessible by walking a long and very steep walkway. It was a bit of a climb and the heights got a bit dizzying at times.

Because of its isolation it is very much unaltered and still has the original charm of an old Italian town. The population today varies from about 7 people in winter to more than 100 in summer.

The town was placed on the World Monuments Fund's 2006 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites, because of threats it faces from erosion and we could understany why. It was a lovely town to explore, very picturesque, and it was just amazing that where we stood at some of the look out points were right on the edge of the cliff face. A wee bit scary.

The only negative to this site is that it is now on the tourist route for the Asian tourists, and unfortunately they are so focused on their selfie poses and photos they don't take time to appreciate where they are and who is around them. We found them to be very rude and obnoxious, so much so, they dampened our visit to this amzaing site. Which was a pity as the place is pretty amazing.Read more

Sorry to hear about your back. The walk across the bridge is scary! The town was good though, although fairly deserted and dilapidated. Keep on enjoying. Sounds like a super time. We are having a rainy autumn. Bit like Olympia ;-) 90 sleeps til Bali.

I had been to Civita but Gordon had not. But it was a treat anyway to see it from the outside. We have not missed Oly's weather at all and this winter/spring has been a doozy. 90 days is WAY too long to wait for Bali.
