Last day - it had to arrive.

Caught the 8.48 bound for Sapporo. This one is a limited express (ordinary train). The journey takes four hours to travel 254kms - bit slower than the bullet trains.

On arrival in Sapporo, we went straight to lunch, and afterwards we were given a coach tour of the CBD.

The capital city of Hokkaido, Sapporo is a modern looking city of three million people. It is known as a winter destination, becoming well known after hosting the 1972 winter olympics. It is famous for its Snow Festival held each year in February.

In winter, the top temperature can still be a minus degree figure, while in summer temperatures reach into the thirties.

We stopped at Odori Park and took the opportunity to pose for a group photo. We then walked a couple of blocks to see the Sapporo Clock Tower. The building was constructed as a gymnasium for the Sapporo Agricultural College. Today it is a museum with displays showing the building's history.Leggi altro

Visited the Sapporo Brewery on the way to our hotel. Checked out its museum and history, then Inage informed us we would be having our farewell dinner there later. Not just any dinner but a Viking dinner

A Viking dinner, it seems, is when a Viking helmet with a flame under it is used to cook on. Beef, lamb, pork, bean shoots, pumpkin, cabbage and onion are all cooked together this way.

Run out of food? Run out of drink? Just ask for more - this is an 'all you can eat / all you can drink' occasion.

At the end of the evening, goodbyes were said as tomorrow people will be leaving at various times.

Bev LeeI hope you've bought home lots of ideas for recipes and a cooking book or two to add to your collection... looking forward to the odd Viking helmet dinner at Burragunya... perhaps a 'Japanese' alternative to a Friday night pizza on occasion! (....I heard a rumour that a sushimi cafe is opening in Benalla...). What a memorable trip you have had!

Two things set this tour apart from others:-

* Inage, our tour guide from the first to the last day.
His English, his knowledge of Japan, his organisational skills and cool demeanour were excellent, but - it was his personality, his openness and sense of humour that made this so much more than just a tour.

* the 'experiences' along the way added to the enjoyment. Mostly, they were things that we wouldn't necessarily have found / done on our own. The traditional Japanese restaurants, maple leaf cake making, calligraphy, meditation with a “real Buddhist monk”…Leggi altro

Who'd have ever thought that we would, one day, make our own sake cup and then toast our success with a drink of sake from it?

We visited a pottery, a miso making enterprise, mailed home a postcard from Mt Fuji and made our own sushi lunch.

We dressed in casual kimonos for dinner.
