    Cruising the Inside Passage

Coastal Waters Of Southeast Alaska And British Columbia ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

A bit windy today, but at least it’s not too cold. :-)
Cruising the inside passage should be great scenery, except there’s pretty heavy fog, maybe a 1/4 mile visibility. Thick enough the ship blares the horn to alert other vessels it’s here.
So we get to explore the ship and enjoy just chilling.

Onboard a Bering Sea crab boat!

I’ve been watching the Deadliest Catch and now I’m actually on one the crab boats, the Aleutian Ballard.
I know I can see them in Seattle, but I’m tickled I get to actually step abroad one! 😁

Awesome excursion! Highly recommend it. They show and explain multiple fisheries plus share their stories.
The numerous Bald Eagles that came to the boat was a delightful surprise.

Walked around town before heading out on excursion. So much gold rush history that intertwines with Seattle’s history. Loving being in places where history happened.

Didn’t see any moose or bears, but I did spot a river otter and we saw a bunch of Trumpeter Swans. Still a beautiful ride on an even more beautiful day.

Not a bad way to end a cruise…

Gulf of Alaska ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

    Last stop of the cruise.
Seeing the glaciers at College Fjord.
Named after Ivy League colleges. Female colleges on the west, male colleges on the East. The largest and still growing is named Harvard Glacier. Notably missing is Princeton, mainly cause there wasn’t a Princeton alumni on the expedition… lolもっと詳しく

    Heading to Denali

    Disembarked at Whittier.
Town has a population of ~200 people during the winter and ~600 during the summer.
Cruise part of our adventure is over. Now we’re on our way to Denali.
    Think Moose…
Pic attached is taken at 11:30pm… I don’t think it actually gets dark here right now.

Pretty cool spot. Close to Denali park entrance and a nice place to soak in the breathtaking surroundings. Looking forward to our adventures tomorrow exploring the park.
Mom saw a Moose on the ride up, but I missed it…
Come on Moose, I just need 1 good pic.

Are you on the Norwegian Cruise Line who just hit the iceberg?? [Roy]

    Jenn J

Jenn JNo, we were on a Holland America boat. We encountered fog the first day, but clear the rest of the trip. They hit a growler, it’s like a small iceberg, nothing like the Titanic.

    Heli back from the glacier

Flying back from the glacier was just as cool as the way in. Coming over a ledge we were treated with a view of Denali. According to the pilot only 30% of visitors actually get to see the mountain. It’s the highest peak in the US and tall enough that it creates its own weather, so most of the time it’s peak is hidden behind clouds.

    Denali Tundra Wilderness bus tour

Tundra Wilderness tour via a Blue Bird school bus (the only type of bus they allow in the park).
Goes 43 miles into the park (road is washed out at mile 44 or they would go further). Narrated tour with hopeful sightings of the ‘Big 5’: Moose, Caribou, Dall Sheep, Bear, Wolf.

Pics are from the same location, about 1.5 hours apart. The smoke moved in really fast!
    Complete change from the morning!

There’s a 10k acre fire burning ~40 miles North of Denali.

Caribo chilling on the side of the road

This guy was kind enough to chill on the side of the road for us as we head out of the park…
Poor guy is shedding his winter undercoat while trying to cool down in 70 degree weather.
Caribou shed their antlers every year, what we see is all new growth from the past month. He has another month of growing to do, they are going to be a massive rack!
