    Khan el-Khalli, Cairo’s oldest market

    19 ноября 2024 г., Египет ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

The sights, sounds and scents of Cairo's oldest and largest open air bazaar, Khan el-Khalli, immerse visitors in Egyptian culture. This bazaar, or souk in Arabic, has something for travelers and locals alike: unique handicrafts, spices, cafés and more. Tucked into narrow cobblestone streets and alleys, Khan el-Khalili offers a dynamic shopping experience.
Situated in Cairo's historic center known as Islamic Cairo, Khan el-Khalili was built in the 14th century.
Mamluk-era architectural elements such as archways and vaulted ceilings still stand today. Two important Cairene landmarks are located nearby: Al-Hussein Mosque, a sacred religious site and important center of Islamic theology, and Al-Azhar University, a prestigious school dedicated to the study of Islam that attracts students from around the world.
Khan el-Khalili remains a bustling destination for both shopping and Egyptian cuisine. Travelers and Egyptians shop the bazaar for local specialties, including soaps, perfumes and spices. Beyond these items, stunning jewelry and artisan leather goods make for special keepsakes. Throughout the bazaar, it is common for locals to bargain for the best price. After a bit of shopping, choose to sample a kofta kebab or a Turkish coffee at El Fishawy, one of Cairo's oldest cafés.

    Great Pyramids of Giza

    20 ноября 2024 г., Египет ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

The Great Pyramids of Giza consist of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, built of more than 200 stone layers and reaching a height of 455 feet at its apex; the almost equally huge Great Pyramid of Khafre, at 448 feet tall; and the Pyramid of Menkaure, modestly sized by comparison at a height of 200 feet. The pyramids stand roughly in a line, from northeast to southwest, in descending order by size.
The Great Sphinx lies to the east, close to parallel with the south edge of the Great Pyramid of Khafre; this enormous statue, sporting the body of a lion and the face of a man, faces east.
Current consensus among Egyptologists is that the head of the Great Sphinx is that of Pharaoh Khafre, the 4th king of the 4th Egyptian dynasty during Egypt's Old Kingdom.

    The Sphinx!

    20 ноября 2024 г., Египет ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Contrary to popular belief, The Sphinx wasn’t built to hide any treasures.
It has a more practical origin. During the construction of the Pyramid of Khafre, a large rock outcropping was blocking the view East, so the options were to remove it or turn it into a monument. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the builders turning it into a monument with a temple for where the pharaoh would be mummified.

And no, it’s not 25,000 years old, it’s ~4500 years old. (Constructed in 2570 BC)

    Egypt Day 4 - Qena

    22 ноября 2024 г., Египет ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Known in ancient Egypt as Caene, Qena's situation on the banks of the Nile River has bolstered its prosperity over millennia. Merchants and travelers have long journeyed here from the Red Sea, through the valley, bringing goods from Persia and beyond. The Sheikh el-Qenawi Mosque on the main square serves as a monument to the city's rich and all-embracing Islamic and Sufi past. Qena is mostly known as the gateway to the magnificent ruins of Dendera, constructed by Ptolemies and Romans in classic Egyptian style. Its stone gate, towering columns and hieroglyphics are some of Egypt's best-preserved structures.Читать далее

    Luxor, Egypt

    23 ноября 2024 г., Египет ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Luxor lies amid what is arguably one of the world's largest archaeological sites: Thebes, once a thriving imperial capital. In antiquity, the Nile River ran through Thebes, dividing it into a "City of the Living" and a "City of the Dead." The former referred to the east bank (modern-day Luxor) as this was where the majority of the city's population-and at times, Egypt's rulers-made their home. The west bank (known today as Kurna) was designated the latter as it served as a necropolis, dotted with the lavish resting places of royalty and other nobility. New findings continue to surface here, reinforcing what we have long come to recognize: the remarkable ingenuity of ancient Egyptian civilization.Читать далее

    Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut

    23 ноября 2024 г., Египет ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Three ancient Egyptian temples stand at the foot of the cliffs surrounding Deir el-Bahri, an archaeological site in the Theban necropolis on the west bank of the Nile River. The Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut is arguably the most famous of the three, as well as the most beautiful and visually striking among all of Egypt's mortuary temples. Dedicated to the sun god Amun, it is also the earliest to have survived from the 18th dynasty of the New Kingdom.

This architectural masterpiece was designed in the 15th century BC by Senenmut, a multitalented official who held many titles in Queen Hatshepsut's royal administration. In order to memorialize her legacy among her male predecessors, Queen Hatshepsut not only had her mortuary temple constructed beside that of Mentuhotep II, but had Senenmut use the temple built five centuries earlier as an inspiration for hers.
Senenmut was careful, however, to make all of the elements of Queen Hatshepsut's temple much grander.
The Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut continues to be an incomparable monument of ancient Egypt, and a fitting tribute to a woman remembered as the greatest of Egypt's female pharaohs.

    Egypt Day 5 - Esna

    24 ноября 2024 г., Египет ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Ancient Egyptians knew Esna as Latopolis, named for the largest of the perch species that swam in the Nile's sacred waters. The fish is still visible in bas-reliefs throughout the region. Esna's modern feature is its lock system that straddles the river. Its ancient past lives on in the colorful street market overflowing with fabrics, carpets, brassware, mother-of-pearl keepsakes and more. Esna's glorious Temple of Khnum is celebrated for its 1st-century Roman Hypostyle Hall, 24 columns topped with intricately carved floral capitals. Its walls are adorned with images of Roman emperors making offerings to Egyptian gods.Читать далее
