Woke up today to a cold morning, but the van was nice and toasty once we turned the heater up. Really this morning it was working almost too well! So that is way better than freezing! Looks like whatever it was isn’t an issue anymore…and we will be home soon so it shouldn’t be a problem if it does act up again.

We got up and stared driving and saw a moose!! He was in the field on the side of the road and I was yelling “moose!! Moose!!” And pointing and Raymond was like what am I looking for?!? And finally he saw it. There was a place to turn around not far after so we turned around so I could see him again, and then when we turned around again he crossed the road right in front of us! So exciting!! I’ve never seen a moose in person before!!

We drove on and quickly got to an area where everything was covered in frost! Not that far from where we camped, but significantly colder! I was really glad we didn’t camp farther south! And we hit an area of really foggy which we haven’t had this whole trip!

We were driving and there was lots of snow in the mountains and got to a point where the road was frosty too, the pullouts were covered in snow, and I thought should we go over to the scenic route I wanted to drive today?? If this is the main road what will that be like…We went to spy on the scenic route and it was sunny and beautiful! And either the sun had dried everything already or they didn’t get as much precipitation yesterday as everything was fine. There were small spots of frost in the shade when we made our first stops, but overall it was dry so that was good. The scenic route was not that long, but a really nice drive! We took a walk through the woods that was covered in lichen that Raymond touched first and was like it’s like a sponge! And it was - hard and stiff. But it was everywhere and my app said reindeer eat it in the winter (there was a sign that this area had the only wild reindeer in Norway!).

After the hike we started to drive away and Raymond was like wait! There is a giant chair! So of course I had to go get a pic sitting in it! I wonder of there is a list of giant chairs in the world? I asked Raymond if he thought there was and he was like if there is not you could make one. True! (I was pretty sad yesterday when I was going through my photos and saw the place with the giant candy canes also had a giant chair and I did not get to sit in it! I didn’t notice it as we passed by…and we were on the way to the mechanics so…. maybe next time!)

We drove the whole road and it ended at a small church which was pretty nice. It was absolutely gorgeous outside even though it was very cold! The sun was really warm and we had to keep the heat off in the car as it was way too hot! Such a nice drive and such a gorgeous day! It was like making up for yesterday being not so great!

  • Lillehammer

    9. oktober, Norge ☁️ 1 °C

After the scenic route we headed on up and I had planned a hike in the area, but unfortunately since we couldn’t go as far yesterday we didn’t really have time. The area was absolutely gorgeous though! It is a definitely come back and hike around area! Up in the pass, wide open areas, super busy (lots of cars parked at the parking spots). On another trip we will come back and explore more.

Then it was on to Lillehammer for a wander through town and it was a pretty nice town! Definitely way nicer than the others we have been to on this trip. There was a nice pedestrian street and we found lots of treats (blueberry cake, chocolate sorbet from 7-11 which was surprisingly good, snickers cake, and a cardamom bun!). It was a nice wander and perfect day for it!

Then on to camp with a quick stop at “To Sew A Seed” artwork…I didn’t actually think it was supposed to be a giant sperm from far away, but then saw the name and it is. We are camped on a very quiet road next to a lake (last photo) and it is pretty nice.

This morning when I woke up I saw all the weather notifications saying that the roads in the mountains will get snowy/icy by this evening so I’m glad we are out of the mountains now and won’t get stuck. We have a ferry tomorrow at 5:30pm so we have to get to that! The forecast says it might snow where we are in the morning, then turn to rain so we shall see. We don’t have a lot on the agenda as we want to make sure we catch our boat, but we will see what we get up to and what the weather is like.

  • Ferry Home

    10. oktober, Norge 🌧 2 °C

Today we woke up to cloudy, cold, and no snow! We turned up the heater…and it started making those noises again. Not as loud as the other day, but still something is not right. I’m glad we are almost home and this didn’t happen at the beginning of the trip!

We headed out to catch our ferry. Originally I had planned on driving back to Gedser and taking the same ferry home, but right before we left someone asked on one of my groups the best easy to get from Berlin to Oslo without flying and someone suggested the Gothenburg/Kiel overnight ferry. I looked it up and it actually would work way better for us. Gedser is another 5 hour drive, the boat would get in way earlier (9 instead of 11), and it was only another hour drive on the other side! So we would save 4 hours of driving and we would get home earlier which is great! So we looked at the rooms, and they are small, but have a nice big window so we decided to go for it (they technically are for 4 people with beds that fold down above ours, but that would be so small!). So off to Gothenburg!

I had so many things planned to stop and spy on depending on how much time we had…and we didn’t do anything except go to the grocery store! We started driving and it was so rainy and windy and awful weather. The wind was blowing us around on the road a little bit so that plus pouring rain = don’t want to go explore.

When we got to Gothenburg the weather was better, and I was going to wander around town a bit, but we could not find parking and there was construction everywhere and it was so stressful we just headed to the boat. We didn’t have a ton of time so it was fine, but I was sad we didn’t get a final walk somewhere!

We sat outside on deck until it got dark and now are hanging out in our room. Tomorrow just a short drive and we will be home! (Also just a note - the red thing in the second photo is a toilet at a rest stop!)

  • Home Again

    11. oktober, Tyskland 🌧 11 °C

Phew! We are home and unpacked and finally sitting down for a break! The boat ride was pretty nice - slept well and it didn’t move very much. Woke up to a nice sunrise and then on to dock.

Headed back to Berlin and saw so many roe deer and a ton of cranes! There were fields covered in them! So that was fun. Then unpack and clean and do all the things!

This was a really nice trip and more relaxing than normal. We did a lot of hiking, but most were easier hikes than Norman and not too bad, but had lots of amazing views! So many fun rocks and animals and all the things! Raymond and I love traveling by camper up in Norway (and Sweden and Finland!) because you can just stop wherever for the night and that is wonderful! Raymond especially loves that :) I just love traveling with the camper as it is more flexible. The drive home was way nicer than I was expecting after seeing everyone say it wasn’t very nice (it is not as nice as the coast, but it is still really nice!) and we had a lot of fun! Til the next adventure!
