Trincomalee is located on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka and is the 5th largest harbor in the world. In "Trinco," we selected a 4.5hr morning excursion, "Temples and Places in Trincomalee".

We started our coach ride through the gates of Fort Jafra and on to the oldest Hindu temple in Sri Lanka, the Temple of Konessaram. A giant Shiva statue, the auspicious one, sits at the entryway to the temple. Devotees, incense, and chanting provided a wonderful sensory backdrop to this journey. Interesting side note: domesticated deer were all about the grounds.

Koneswaram Temple of Trincomalee is a classical-medieval Hindu temple complex in Trincomalee, a Hindu religious pilgrimage center in Eastern Province, Sri Lanka.

We then drove over unpaved and uneven roads to an ancient site of Buddhust temple ruins, Velgam Vehera, where we walked, seeing monkeys, peacocks, and ruins including a standing Buddha statue.
