  • Dakar, Senagal

    28 Maret 2025, Senegal ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Arriving in Dakar at 8am, we prepared for our final safari excursion.

On the ride to Bandia, I noticed vast swaths of unfinished residential tracts; much built but all unfinished.

The Bandia Reserve was very nice. We saw a small variety of grazing animals up close!

For lunch, we ate at the Royal Horizons Baobab restaurant.

Today, we took the Museum excursion.

Museu Nacional do Azulejo is one of the most important of the national museums by the singularity of its collection, Azulejo (tile), an artistic expression that differentiates Portuguese culture, and by the uniqueness of the building in which the Museum is set, former Madre de Deus Convent, founded in 1509 by Queen D. Leonor.

  • Bordeaux, Day Two

    7 April 2025, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Today, Cathy took an early excursion to Saint Emilion and nearby winery.

I took a walk back the location where we walked yesterday and picked up some wonderful pastries for the crew.

Then we took a wine-tasting excursion to Saint-Émilion, a town in the Bordeaux wine region of France.

Here, we visited the Château Margaux, recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, a prestigious classification for Bordeaux wines. The estate's history dates back to the 12th century, contributing to the legend of Bordeaux wines globally.

Then we wine-tasted at the nearby Château Siran, which has belonged to the same family for over 150 years, with Edouard Miailhe representing the fifth generation of owners since 2007. The estate boasts 25 hectares of vineyards in Margaux.

  • Saint-Malo, France

    10 April 2025, Perancis ⋅ 🌙 46 °F

Today, we have an 8.5-hour excursion to Mont-Saint- Michel, the tidal island.

Amazing experience to see the majestic tidal island, to walk the streets, and to explore the castle and Abbey. We walked through the narrow streets: many people, shops, and eateries.

The legend of Mont-Saint-Michel begins in 708, after the archangel Michael appeared to a Catholic bishop three times in dream. Saint Michael asked him to build a sanctuary in his honor on an island called Mont-Tombe. The construction of this first oratory echoes the rise of Christianity in the West.

In 966, the Benedictine monks came to the mountain, and the construction of the abbey church began in 1023. The Mount became a place of pilgrimage for the entire Christian West. It welcomed pilgrims including several kings of France and England.

Strategically situated in the heart of the bay, the abbey was also a fortress during the Middle Ages. During the Hundred Years War, Mont-Saint-Michel resisted every siege thanks to the powerful ramparts, which made it an impregnable city, but undoubtedly, also thanks to the ceaseless coming and going of the tides. It became a symbol of victory for the kingdom of France.

In the 17th century, the abbey was gradually transformed into a prison, nicknamed the Bastille of the Seas. During the French Revolution, the State nationalized the property of the clergy and the monks were expelled from the abbey.

The abbey became a "central house" in the 19th century, and most of its spaces were refurbished to accommodate prisoners.

The abbey was classified as a Historic Monument in 1874.

  • Southampton, England

    12 April 2025, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

Wow! First time in Iconic Southampton! We took the 5-hour excursion to Winchester Cathedral, a little over 45 minutes away.

The grounds of Winchester Cathedral have been a sacred site for almost 1500 years. Having begun as an early Christian church around 645 AD, named Old Minster, it became one of the most important cathedrals in England.

Magna Carta -- Today, the cathedral holds a 14th-century volume containing a transcription of the 1217 version of the Magna Carta, the third version of the document.

We learned that Jane Austen, one of England's greatest novelists, was buried in the Cathedral in 1817; and that Winchester is also the final resting place of Saxon royalty.

Our guide was very knowledgeable as she walked us through the little town.

  • Rouen, France

    13–15 Apr 2025, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

We arrived today about 4pm. The ship sailed up the La Seine River for several miles. There were so many beautiful home farms along the way. When we finally arrived we just stayed on the ship and relaxed because the shops were closed on Sunday.

We had a UK-themed Sunday night dinner with Ravi, Kala, Bala, and Barbara. The food was, well, British, but we had fun!

The Palace of Versailles is a former royal residence commissioned by King Louis XIV located west of Paris,

We took our seats for dinner amid the history and artistry representing 'all the glories of France' in Louis-Philippe's grand hall, which celebrates 15 centuries of French military successes.
