    Nach der Rückkehr ins Hotel (und in die Hotelbar) gab es eine Degustation der lokalen Biere. Für Skye sicher grossartige Biere, welche aber weltweit gesehen auch noch Potential haben.

    „Eines Abends im Jahr 1992 trafen sich einige befreundete Lehrer in einem örtlichen Pub – und das Gespräch drehte sich um den Mangel an gutem Bier auf Skye. Jemand meinte scherzhaft, dass die Gründung einer Brauerei die einzige Möglichkeit sei, die Situation zu verbessern.
    Damals gab es in Schottland nur sechs kleine unabhängige Brauereien – und keine auf Skye. Konnte das wirklich funktionieren?
    Das war möglich, und das tat es auch. Drei Jahre später waren wir endlich bereit, unser erstes Ale zu brauen – Red Cuillin. Es war so erfolgreich, dass wir es noch heute nach demselben Rezept brauen. Nur der Name hat sich geändert – wir nennen es jetzt Skye Red .
    1997 gewannen wir den CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Champion Beer of Scotland-Titel. Und wir standen auch auf der Shortlist für die britische Meisterschaft. Diese Anerkennung verhalf dem Unternehmen 1998 zur Vollzeitbeschäftigung. Bis heute haben wir über 60 Auszeichnungen erhalten. Nicht schlecht für etwas, das als Scherz bei ein paar Pints ​​begann.“    Lue lisää

    Eilean Donan Castle

    Eilean Donan is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland all over the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands.

    Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

    Nur "Carlos" haben wir nicht getroffen :-(

    Wie mit allen guten Schlössern sind auch mit Eilean Donan zahlreiche Geister verbunden.
    „Carlos“ ist ein spanischer Soldat, der mit dem als Ausstellung bekannten Bereich in Verbindung gebracht wird.
    Im Jahr 1719 wurde eine kleine Anzahl spanischer Soldaten in Eilean Donan stationiert, um die dort ansässigen jakobitischen Soldaten zu unterstützen. Vielleicht war er also ein unglückliches Opfer des Aufstands, bei dem die Burg zerstört wurde?
    In diesem Bereich sind regelmäßig Schritte des Personals zu hören, nachdem die Besucher nach Hause gegangen sind.    Lue lisää

    Ein grosser Strand auf dem Weg zur Fähre und die Gelegenheit für Jan-Philip und Jürgen, die Füsse ins Wasser zu bewegen. Beim zweiten Anlauf geht es und man kann es gut aushalten.

    The Original Skye Ferry

    Wir wussten nur, dass diese Fähre was besonderes und weltweit noch einmaliges ist. Das, was uns tatsächlich erwartete, war wirklich überraschend. Und Seeroben haben wir auch noch gesehen.

    Our ferry boat, the MV Glenachulish, is the last manually operated turntable ferry in the world. She is ideally suited for this unique crossing to Skye and is an important part of our heritage. Although there has been a car ferry service crossing the Kylerhea straits since 1934, the very same crossing has been in almost constant use for hundreds of years, as this is the closest point on the Mainland to the Isle of Skye.
    The MV Glenachulish was built in 1969 and has a length of almost 18m and a beam of 6.7m. The ferry has a capacity of 6 cars but will allow any variation of foot passengers and vehicles within its safety specifications (maximum 12 passengers).
    People come from all over the world to visit our ferry. She’s been featured on TV and more recently won over new fans via online short films and videos, see Tom Scot’s video below. Travelling on the the Glenachulish is a unique experience, but she is over 50 years old and maintenance is expensive. Please contribute if you can and help to preserve her.    Lue lisää

    Baden in den Fairy Pools

    Located on the northern slopes of the magnificent Black Cuillin range, Skye’s famous Fairy Pools are beautiful crystal-clear blue pools on the Allt Coire a' Mhadaidh (Burn of the Dog), which can be seen snaking down the hillside of Coire na Creiche into Glen Brittle where it becomes the River Brittle.
    Although a spectacular and tranquil Highlands vista, in 1601 the area was the scene of the last of Scotland’s clan battles, and one of the bloodiest ever recorded in clan history. It is here the MacDonalds of Sleat and the MacLeods of Dunvegan saw the end of the long and brutal campaign of the Wars of the One-Eyed Woman. See our history section MacDonalds of Sleat.

    The wonder of the Fairy Pools entices visitors from all over the world, as they make some great wild swimming for those brave enough to enter the ice-cold waters. For the less adventurous, these magical Fairy Pools make for some fantastic photos.

    The walk to the pools uses the same route there and back on a purpose-made good gravel path. The complete return distance to the first main waterfall and pool is 2.4km, with the average time to complete the walk being 40 minutes to an hour and a half (with no stops and depending on your level of fitness). Most people will spend some time working their way up the river from the first waterfall exploring the different pools.    Lue lisää

    „The Isle of Skye's best Pub. As awarded in the recent Taste Local Awards.“

    Das klingt doch super und unsere Erwartungen wurden nicht enttäuscht. Von gestern gelernt (die Schotten essen früh und wer nicht sehr früh da ist, bekommt keinen Tisch mehr) waren wir schon um 18 Uhr im Pub.
    Die Bedienung kompetent und freundlich, die Bierauswahl grossartig und das Essen überragend. Wenn die 55 minütige Heimfahrt nicht gewesen wäre, wären wir sogar noch zum Public Viewing geblieben.    Lue lisää

    Ferry Armadale - Malaig

    Heute früh raus, Isle of Slye und Kyle verlassen, knapp vier Stunden fahrt, nur um Whisky zu verkosten. Wir haben uns für die abwechslungsreiche Strecke entschieden und dürfen so nochmals Fähre fahren. Da ahnten wir noch nicht, dass es nicht die einzige Fährfahrt an diesem Tag sein würde.
    Wenn man am Abend vorher die Fähre bucht und früh am Fährhafen ankommt, klappt alles super.    Lue lisää

    Annabel Thomas hat grosse Visionen:

    Our small distillery is located in the village of Drimnin on the Morvern peninsula on the West Coast of Scotland, and is powered by 100% renewable energy. B Corp certified and verified net zero for scopes 1 and 2, we put the planet first. Using only organic Scottish barley we produce smooth and elegant whiskies which are light and fruity on the palate, and bottled in 100% recycled glass.“

    Das Interesse unserer Gruppe und der Erfolg ihrer Whiskys zeigt, dass sie auf dem richtigen Weg ist. Wir können vier der Whiskys sowie den Gin probieren und erhalten eine spannende Führung durch die Destillerie. Und erfahren vor allem sehr vier, über das nachhaltige Konzept. Natürlich decken wir uns auch mit Whisky ein - auch um das Projekt zu unterstützen..    Lue lisää
