• Glorenza - a fortified trading centre

    The smallest town in South Tyrol, Glorenza, has an eventful history and an interesting past as a late medieval trading centre. The town walls, still fully preserved, lend the little town a unique character with their imposing gates and fortified towers. Glorenza is first mentioned in 1163 but was originally a Roman settlement. It became a free city that was chartered in 1304. The city walls were built in the 16th century and are 10m high with town gates. The current wall protects the old town from regular flooding from the nearby small river. A tide mark about 2 m up the wall marks the highest flood level.Read more
