    Budapest Eye

    6 Eylül 2018, Macaristan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

This new Ferris Wheel opened on Erzsébet Square in mid-march 2017. Not as big as many other “Eyes”, it does have a magnificent 360 view of the city from the top.

    To the Chain Link Bridge

    6 Eylül 2018, Macaristan ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

The Castle Hill Tunnel is always congested and very smoggy because it has no ventilation. A single lane each way with a risky pedestrian access as well if you can stand the choking fumes. This evening it is almost a car park, it is so busy with the evening traffic on the Chain Bridge.Okumaya devam et

    Budapest - a potted history

    7 Eylül 2018, Macaristan ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Budapest was mostly built in the mid 19th century.
Two million people live here, thats 1 in every 5 persons in Hungary live in Budapest. Most live in apartments. Many are very basic. We pass by Russian designed block apartments....block units which are stacked together to form a high-rise building. They are not insulated which makes them very hot or very cold. Gradually they are being given "skins" which improve their appearance and insulation. Most of these were built during communist period. The biggest residential building is one of these and holds 3,000 people. It's called the village.
We pass by the Roman ruins of the city and aquaduct. This was the edge of the Roman Empire. Archaeologists are working on this area.
1989 was a turning point with capitalism and privatisation coming to Hungary. The average salary is a mere €700 per month after tax. Tax is 47% - education is free, pension is available, health's mostly free, unemployment is only 3%.
The biggest industries in Hungary are - Car Manufacturing, IT, Agriculture, Tourism,
Hungary is part of the EU but currency is not euro. The local currency is the Florent and it is worth approximately 300 Florent equal €1.

    Skanzen

    7 Eylül 2018, Macaristan ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Skanzen comes from a Finnish word for an open air museum using original buildings. It has been open for 50 years and occupies 60 hectares of land. Traditional homes and buildings from all parts of Hungary are disassembled and reassembled to provide a living history of the Hungarian culture over time. Most of the furniture and fittings included in the displays are also historical artefacts or replicas.
At the Inn, there is a cooking class happening. They are learning to make goulash soup, a traditional Hungarian dish.

Szentendre is on the Danube River. It’s known for its baroque architecture, churches, colorful houses and narrow, cobbled streets. The main square, Fő Tér, and the alleyways around it are lined with art galleries, museums and shops.
Szentendre has been the home of many generations of Hungarian artists since the early 20th century.

    Austria

    8 Eylül 2018, Avusturya ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

Two thirds of Austria is flat around the Danube, 1/3 is the Austrian alps.
The population is around 8.5 million.
Austrians are very environmentally aware...lots of wind farms, wildlife bridges, protected areas, recycling, no nuclear power, hydro power n the alps.
    Food production is high quality.
The language is German but there are many different dialects.
There is a coffee and cake culture that we are keen to tryout.

    Mayerling

    8 Eylül 2018, Avusturya ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

This is the site of Crown Prince Rudolph’s suicide. He was the 30 year old son of the Hapsburg Emperor.
Rudolph married Stephanie and a daughter, Elisabeth, was born in 1883. They grew apart. In 1888, Rudolph met 17 year old Baroness Mary Vetsera who madly adored him and became his mistress. She was prepared to die for him.
In the hunting lodge at Mayerling, they made a murder-suicide pact in 1889. This is the site of the hunting lodge, the church built and a small museum around the incident.
Crown Prince Rudolph was buried as a Catholic, but Mary was buried 4 times as the authorities tried to hush up the incident. Her final coffin is on display and it has been looted and damaged.
