  • Lighting the Christmas Tree

    December 20, 2023, Tasman Sea ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

It's a holiday cruise so the ship is decked out with all the Christmas decorations. Tonight they light the Christmas tree in the Atrium which is 3 decks high and there is carol singing as well. I was late getting there and all the prime spots were taken, so I snuck into a pretty good spot behind the glass staircase where I was in the thick of things.Read more

  • Waitangi

    December 23, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Going ashore today means tendering to shore with misty rain and wind. We have nothing planned so have opted to stay on board today.
Fortunately from our balcony we are able to see the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The Waitangi flagstaff marks the spot where the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed on 6 February 1840.Read more

  • Tendering to shore

It's raining and miserable as they launch the tenders for those going ashore in Waitangi. The weather worsens during the day and passengers come back onboard soaked.

The fauna of New Zealand. NZ broke away from Gondwana Land about 100 million years ago and drifted far away from what is now Australia and South America. It had no known mammals but many birds that are/were not found anywhere else. The Moa, a large flightless bird, was hunted to extinction. The Kiwi has survived. There is a wide variety of seabirds and several endangered parrots that still survive. No snakes in NZ!Read more

  • Sounds of the Season

    December 24, 2023, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Sounds of the Season on Noordam - a fantastic start to Christmas celebrations on board. The international choir, crew and officers are from all around the world. With drama! - 2 emergencies called during Silent Night, the finale. One medical and the other fire (smoke detected). Within 5 seconds more than half the performers on stage were gone. Take 2 on the end of the concert and all squared away by around 12:30am. Wonderful response from the officers and crew.Read more

  • White Island

    December 25, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

Dec 9, 2019 at 14:11 NZDT, White Island erupted resulting in 22 deaths including 2 bodies never found. It was a popular tourist destination & 47 people were on the island at the time. The ash plume rose 3.7km into the air. In the past 40 years there have been several eruptions here.
Smoke & sulphur fumes are still rising. It feels bizarre being so close to New Zealand’s last fatal volcanic eruption.

  • Napier

    December 26, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Napier - art deco architecture- really well done, even the names of buildings reflect the era. The city suffered a severe earthquake and fire in the early 1930's and was rebuilt in the art deco style of the time.Read more
