The Independence Monument was built in 2001 to celebrate 10 years of independence from the USSR. The structure is over 118 meters tall and features a golden spire rising above a white dome. Surrounding it are enormous statues representing the 27 Turkmen heroes from the historic tribes. Not far from the monument stands a huge golden statue of President Saparmurat Niyazov.

In the evening, the white monument is illuminated with lights that change color, making it even more beautiful.

Interestingly, this was the only monument where we actually saw locals, mostly young men and women eating, playing, or chatting.
