    October 6, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

My first visit to Apano Meria highlighted that human activity had been present in the area, but with more traditional ways of living...is development possible in todays society whilst protecting the environment 🤔

    October 9, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    🛵 # 1

The SCE was contacted by a travel programme who asked to include a piece about Apano Meria. Totally unexpected that we would be asked to take part!

We all went to the nature reserve... I travelled tandem with Io on her moped. The views were amazing, I just hope they can translate Stoke-on-Trent English 🤭

The presenter, Jerome, is very well-known in 🇬🇷... More information to follow...but food then drinks 🍻 first!

  • Walking Ano Syros

    October 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

  • Manchester of Hermoupolis

    October 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

Syros, historically an industrial town, had a network of textile 🏭

Unknown why, in August 1986, the workers were told the factory was closed. The doors were shut, and everything was left in situ. In 2013, the factory was discovered, and private money invested to preserve the history of the last workers and their skills...🪡

The Jacquard Loom is an absolutely amazing piece of technology! Peggy was absolutely fabulous 🥰 A trip to see if a working one is in action has been added to the list...

  • Industrial Diversification?

    October 13, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Why, when Ermoupolis has a rich industrial history, is development being framed largely around tourism without consideration to possible alternatives?

  • Lady of Tinos Pilgrimage

    October 14, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

A shrine to the Virgin Mary, becoming a destination of Christian pilgrimage to an Icon believed to be the source of miracles.

Pilgrims crawl on their knees for about 800 meters from the Port up to the church's front steps, an act to pay homage to the miraculous Icon. Once inside the church, they would kiss the Icon adorned with jewels and pray for a miracle 🙏

It was way too busy to visit inside...

  • Marble Museum

    October 15, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Marble, a crystalline solid rock formed by the metamorphosis of limestone, is a formation of calcite and dolomite minerals. The presence of other minerals in differing amounts affects both physical properties and colour, 120+ kinds in Greece.

Quarying methods ⛏️ largely stayed as per Greek antiquity until the 1950s, with quarrymen exploiting natural fissures to extract the massive block. Along the fissures, they fit iron wedges sandwiched between iron splints. Pounding on these wedges with iron-headed mallets as well as pushing on levers inserted elsewhere eventually releases the block.

  • Human-Centred Development?

    October 16, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

🇧🇹 GNH principles applied result in Human-Centred development for conservation.

Development with no footprint, like a boat sailing through the ocean, yet an approach that keeps the boat in shape. Apano Meria SCE needs a participatory approach to decide how best to achieve it 💚Read more

  • Whirling Dervishes

    October 22, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

A Sufi’s way of life is to love and be of service to people, deserting the ego and all illusion so that one can reach maturity and perfection, and finally reach Allah, the True, the Real. The Order of the Whirling Dervishes is one branch of the vast Sufi tradition of Islam 🕌

While whirling him arms are open, his right hand directed to the sky ready to receive God’s beneficiance, looking to his left hand turn towards the earty, he turns from right to left around the heart. This is his way of conveying God’s spiritual gift to people ✨️
