  • Maun Shopping

    I går, Botswana ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We spent last night with the owners of Thakadu rest camp and the reason there is no animals is because there was a drought last February and they were culled. A month later the rains came and the camp was under 1.5 meters of water and it’s been raining on and off since. Só except for our unwanted encounter with 2 snakes nothing came to camp. But we did see a warthog and 2 jackal at the waterhole.
We left Thakadu at 9am and it was a 280km journey to Maun and the sitatunga camp. We pitched up and went straight to Maun for shopping. 2 days without meat and I was starving só for lunch we even stopped at wimpy.
After shopping we stopped at the Botswana wildlife offices to get our permits for Nxai Pan, that was easier than we thought and we were back at camp by 4:30pm when we lit a fire with some left over firewood.

  • Thakadu Game Farm

    4. maj, Botswana ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Finally after 2pm we were allowed to check in, it’s a nice camp with antelope and various non threatening animals roaming free and there is a lit waterhole at night.
There is a big bar and restaurant and swimming pool and the campsite is basic but adequate for us. It’s not as posh as we thought but it’s not a bad stopover.Læs mere

  • Ghanzi Shopping

    4. maj, Botswana ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We got to our camp for the next 2 nights at midday and we had to wait until 2pm to to properly check in so we took a drive down the road to Ghanzi to do the shopping. There was no real meat in any if the 3,supermarkets só we ended up with veggie burgers and rolls and veggie sausages for tomorrow with pasta.Læs mere

  • Xelda Game Farm - Last day in Namibia

    3. maj, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We left at 8am and it was 380km and 5 hours of driving to our next camp just 20km from the Botswana border.
Xelda Game Farm is set in a beautiful location 3km off of the main road. It is still under new development and we got to use the toilets in one of the new chalets as the ablution blocks are still being restored.
The place is immaculate with a huge reception and bar area and all of the chalets have been restored to the highest standard we have seen. It is far too good for us. The campsites are huge and each has its own seating and Braai area and there is also a beautiful pool.

  • Ombo rest camp

    2. maj, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

This morning we were up at 6am snd by 8am we were on the road taking a picture of the Spitzkoppe sign on the way out.
We got diesel 20km later snd for the first time in 2 1/2 weeks put air back in our tyres. Then it was a 2.5 hour drive to Ombo rest camp. We are now just 2 days away from Botswana.
Ombo rest camp is lovely, it has a small selection of animals, a tiny pool but it’s quiet and good enough for a nights stopover.

  • Rock arch without the tourists.

    1. maj, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

This morning we headed across the road about 1km and back to rock arch. Ellie had the great idea of going just before 10am. This meant that the campers that were here last night had left but the new ones hadn’t yet arrived. Also the tourist buses hadn’t come in this far yet.
Once we got there, there was one French family and us só we pretty much had it all to ourselves.

  • Spitzkoppe Community Camp

    30. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Today we packed up and left Goanikontes at 8am and drove just over 100 miles to our next sleepover. Spittzkoppe community camp is set around huge rock mountains in the desert. It is busy with people during the day due to allowing day visitors for hiking and climbing but at night there are only 17 pitches and we got here at 11:30am and got an amazing pitch. They are all totally isolated and off grid só even though we are not alone in the park we are alone camping. Some of the people that had arrived late got some really crap pitches that aren’t secluded and on route to the tourist destinations só we were lucky with our pitch.
After lunch of a pizza each at the restaurant we went for a hike, first to the small bushman’s rock which we have to pay for só we turned around and hiked to the rock pools and rock arch. There is also plenty of bird life here which is great for when we are sitting in camp.

  • Swakipmond

    29. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today we drive into Swakipmond for the second time to collect our goods for the caravan. Namibia has been harsh on the trailer and we’ve needed a new door lock, reflectors in the front and we brought some clips to do the gas doors up properly.
Leaving town I saw a sign for a canopy shop and we popped in and they fitted brand new working gas struts to our rear door. It makes such a difference.

  • The petting Zoo

    28. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we drove to swakipmond, the next big town and visited a store called bushwackers to replace all of the broken things on the caravan. Namibian roads are super tough.
On the way back we visited the petting zoo and then the museum in camp before chilling out for the rest of the day and appreciating all the bird life that has come to visit us in camp.Læs mere

  • Goanikontes Oasis

    27. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We left Mirabib camp at 9am just after we heard lions contact calling. We were on high alert all the way out of the plains until we got to Walvis bay where we stopped for some shopping.
From walvis bay it was a 40 minute drive to our camp in the Lunar landscape Of Goanikontes oasis camp just off of moon valley road. This place is in an unbelievable setting deep in a canyon. It’s quirky aswell.Læs mere

  • Mirabib Camp

    26. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After 4 hours in the road and roughly 70km between each stop today we finally arrived at our camp.
Mirabib Camp is an off grid camp in the middle of the desert. It only has 6 pitches around a huge rocky outcrop and we are the only ones here.
From the main gravel road it took us another hour to get here 32km out in the middle of nowhere. This is the most remote we have ever been.

  • A quick stop in Solitaire

    26. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Our next stop en route today was the tiny town of Solitaire.
Solitaire has a petrol station, a lodge, a general store and a bakery. And a population of 95. There are always more tourists than residents.
We were here for Mcgregors Bakery made famous by a Scottish man called Paddy McGregor who died in 2014 and came up with a famous apple pie recipe. We had the pie with ice cream and it was amazing.

  • The Pink Fridge

    26. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today is moving day and after the sunrise at Deadvlei we headed back to Camp, packed up and set off.
Our first destination of the day was the pink fridge. Yes a giant pink fridge in the desert literally in the middle of nowhere that runs on solar power and someone sticks with water and iced tea. How Random!!!Læs mere

  • Back to Deadvlei for sunrise

    26. april, Namibia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

This morning we were up at 5 and into the park by 6am in the dark. We were probably 10th in the queue and as the barrier lifted it was like wacky races with cars racing to be in front of each other.
I was annoyed at the speed and just stupidity of drivers and thought when we got to Deadvlei all the idiot instagrammed would be there but I was wrong.
As we approached the 4x4 area loads of them stopped wondering how they were going to get the through. Yes they have a 4x4 but that means nothing if you don’t know how to drive it and which gears to use.
We had already let the air out of the tyres, we engaged low range put it into 3rd gear and sailed by 4 cars that buried themselves in the deep sand.
We followed 3 Toyota hilux that were really just ragging the hell out of there cars but to be fair they made it through and got to Deadvlei and carried on driving. None of these idiots knew where they were going and we parked up, walked the 1500 meters over the dunes and got to Deadvlei first r we it’s no other tourists. Ellie was super pleased.

  • Hiking Sessrium Canyon

    25. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After escaping the hottest part of the day in the pool we decided to head to Sessrium Canyon late afternoon for a short but gruelling hike.
This time just one week ago this canyon was completely flooded. It generally floods once a decade, that is how rare the recent rainfall has been.
Apart from small pools of water it was completely dry today.

  • Sessrium Campsite

    25. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Back at camp for 9:30am and we were packed and ready to leave by 10:30am for the short drive through the first set of gates to Sessrium Campsite. This isn’t nearly as posh as our last camp but we are inside the first gate which gives us a 1 hour headstart on the park só we can leave one hour before sunrise at 6:15am and get to Deadvlei nice and early.Læs mere

  • Deadvlei

    24. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

At 7:15am they let us in. It was bang in sunrise and we were 13th in the queue but that didn’t really count for much as the people camped inside the fence were allowed an hours headstart.
Once we were in it was like wacky races and the 60kph speed limit meant nothing as people overtook each other in the race to be somewhere first.
We just sat tight, and gradually cars peeled off at different viewpoints as we drive all the way to the end of the park and engaged low range four wheel drive and hit 3km of super soft sand and deep water. Ghost didn’t falter once and we were soon at the destination of the day.
    Deadvlei.

  • Sossus Oasis Campsite

    23. april, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

It was nearly 3 hours of extreme gravel roads to get here and we lost the gas bottle on route as it fell out the bottom of the trailer. I’m definitely not getting Namibia. There is a lot of nothing. Nobody seems to be a local and all it is, is hire vehicles with roof tents on and those tourists are mainly French and German. None of the tourists are friendly even if you say hello they look at you like you’ve got 2 heads.
However we have arrived at camp and it is nice and we have great views of the nothingness. We are surrounded by the rooftop tent gangs but fortunately we’ll be out before them un the morning as we have nothing to pack up.
