    A glacier

Glacier National Park has glaciers. This hike is to the most visited one. Views start out promising.

    Views

    1. Views higher up were hazy. Hard to tell but for a while the drop was a sheer 200 feet down.
    2. Do the layers represent an ancient ocean? See later post.

    Critters

    1. What's this?
    2. What's this? (Oops, he's facing away.)

    Grinnell Glacier

The glacier was "discovered" just 120 years ago. 1. is one frame of a panny. 2 is a glacierberg.

    WTF

What the hell makes rock look like this? By good fortune i found out. They are traces of 1,000,000,000 year old stromatolites*. Current altitude approx 6500 feet.

*Colonies of bacteria that live in shallow seas. Still exist today, they look like white mounds a couple feet across.

    Rocks

The huge variety of rocks left behind by the trillion pound bulldozer is amazing. Many were beautiful.

    Way out

On the way out more of the haze had lifted so i got a better picture of the lake. The great color is from rock ground extremely fine by the glacier.

On this trail there is water cascading onto the trail. People like it.

    Cattle Baron Dinner Club

Who suggested going here?! Do you see the menu? Who would have expected 4 star prices here? At the time i went the A/C wasn't working and the all teen wait staff couldn't keep up with the medium-sized crowd. There's nothing around it but a trailer house and down the road a bit is run-down cabins. At the end of the small road is the very large, old resort on the edge of a lake.

    Eulogy to Lexie

I'm really going to miss that dog. She had so much personality. There was nothing not to like about her. I sure wish i could have brought her to the vet. I would have brought her a huge hunk of cheese and told her she was a very good dog... she was such a good dog... I'm going to miss her a lotЧитать далее

    On the way

This was a gas stop that reminded me to record how there are "casinos" in practically every gas station and restaurant.

    Billings MT

The road into billings is up high and runs for several miles along the edge of a cliff (escarpment?) The airport is on this high part. The people that built houses here have a view of the entire city in the valley. The second pic is the long straight drop to the city.

    Mist

Can you see the mist? It had been 92ish on the highway. In the high plains it seems to me that it doesn't start to cool down until the sun is really low, like 6ish. Around 6 today the sun went behind some clouds. The combination dropped the temperature all of 10 degrees. Very quickly any area with actual vegetation got a mist around it.

    Little Bighorn

Here's where a small number of soldiers killed many native persons. Or was Little Bighorn where Custer's hubris got his troop wiped out? Anyway, its all cows and trailers now.

    Another stream video

This was from an earlier hike - Ptarmigan, i think - where i stopped to rest on the way down. Hikes outside of Yellowstone are a lot more difficult. I'm guessing because temps are 20 degrees higher and there is some humidity. (Summer weather at 8000 feet is stupendous.)

I took the 1 mile walk around its base, which is paved.I believe this is a prayer flag. On close inspection it looks like a handkerchief. The way the mountain erodes makes regular geometric tubes.

    Devil's Tower

A really wondrous, immense natural formation. You can see why humans of all kinds are attracted to it.

You can take the Presidential Boardwalk to get a little closer.

    Mt Rushmore

One thing I've noticed about travelling is that when you get there you know what you're going to see. Four dudes in rock, check. With the gargantuan revolution that is the Internet you can see anything any where. Like i found this once. https://www.google.com/search?q=genghis khan st… That's 13 stories tall. Anyway, seeing the sights today was more like confirming what I'd already been aware of, so it takes a little away from the trip. Guess that's how things are now.

PS Thomas Jefferson's recipe for vanilla ice cream is very good.

    Campground

I'm not getting soft. Rapid City has an ordinance preventing people from staying overnight in places like Walmart. Boy this KOA is great. Its right on the edge of the city on a main road, it has tractor rides for kids, beer for adults, a pool and hot tub, and its layout is pretty good. No wonder this chain is everywhere.

I hope to be in Wisconsin tomorrow. The hook of Harvey is all over Nashville now. I hope to drive right over it.

    Badlands National Park

What i said yesterday counts today. Pictures can't represent how wild this area is. Driving through these formations and colors was really something.

    Badlands

One end of the main road has lots of valleys (the erosion is below you.) The other end you are in the formations (you are at the base of the eroded areas.) Here is the latter. Really awesome area.

    Closer

Made it another 612 miles with no major catastrophies. I mention this because my mileage is like 9 mpg now. Wasn't it 12 on the way over...?

    Quick patch up

The plastic bowed out enough to hit the tire. The hole would let in plenty of water. Hope the screws i put in right behind the tire don't back out.

    Oasis

This is a rest stop in Illinois. They call them "Oasis". Its one rest stop on both sides of the highway and all the stores are on a giant bridge. People who stop get a neat view and it must cost the state less than building 2 stops. I give them a win.

    Imagine

Imagine you've just come out of the rest stop bathroom and you're skipping along humming a happy tune and you come around the corner to see this. Holey crap, who would've seen that coming? As i said i was more aggravated that a 10 ton semi rolling down a hill did only minor damage. Its like, how could something so unlikely happen and yet the results are so small?
