    El cocuy

    El cocuy, capital of the area but a small 5k people town, suffered from many drawbacks after the reunification and the introduction of the global market. Most of the area was living on agriculture and livestock but they couldn't compete with the global market and in 60 years the town moved from 20k people to 5k.

    The place feels and looks like your small andean village with everyone wearing ponchos and hats. People are some of the most cheerful and friendly I met on this trip.    Leer más

    El cocuy trek day 1: cabana el pulpito

    First day, after a quick visit of el Cocuy and filling the registration formalities of the park we went to a refuge at 3800m to acclimate and we did a small hike (3h with 300m of elevation) to warm up and prepare our bodies. And I already had a blast with the landscape with that small "hike".

    Unfortunately my camera is half broken at the moment so I can't control the aperture and all my lenses are locked to the maximum aperture. Can still take pictures in daylight with small iso and shutter speed but it clearly limits my flexibility.

    There are a lot of issues with the local natives that want to close the park, the park will be closed for two month at the end of September but there is already rumours that it will be closed for far more times, I may be one of the last lucky guys to do those trails for an undefined amount of time.

    Tomorrow going to Laguna Grande de la Sierra, 4600m high for a 1000m elevation gain.

    5pm here at 3600m and it is already super cold, can't wait to froze at 4500+ 😅 after the horrendous heat of Santa Marta and Leticia, I guess my body will take some times to recover from this trip.    Leer más

    El cocuy trek day 2: Laguna grande

    First real hike of the trek, going to the laguna grande de la sierra (4600m) and then to the border of the glacier concave (4700m). 22km trip with 1100m of elevation gain that started at 5am.

    It started well with cloudy weather and some small rain but it was still okay. But then at around 11am, while at around 4/5 of the way to the lac it started to rain and it would not stop until the end of the day. Couldn't get a clear view on the lac and the mountains and ended totally wet and frozen, honestly at this point I was considering canceling the last day as it was obvious some of my clothes which I didn't had changes for would not dry in time.Leer más

    El cocuy trek day 3: Pulpito del diablo

    Third day, so decided to keep it til the end. And I did well, the day has been all sunny and I got a blast on the way, the landscape was amazing and I could reach my new elevation record at 4850m at the glacier limit of the mountain.

    Will probably be my last activity for this trip as my camera is half broken and I am just exhausted (and supposed to get back to work on Monday ><)

    Guanajuato

    Guanajuato for El cervantino festival, a whole city completely built around the theme of Don Quichotte for some reasons. One of my favorite places in Mexico.

    The festival is the biggest Latino festival, the town host various concerts, shows and movies projection for almost a month. You can't walk in the evening without running into spontaneous fanfares or jam in the street and some performances.

    Unfortunately I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted as I was working all day and tomorrow I will need to move to Chiapas :( probably my biggest miss on this trip    Leer más
