What better than to spend Halloween day at a cemetery. We wandered through Greyfriars Kirkyard today on a mission to locate some Harry Potter inspiration! But first, a stop at the Museum of Magic, Fortune Telling, and Witchcraft. It's a tiny space, residing in a charming wee building, which once was a 17th century bishop’s cottage. "With a touch of whimsy, we at the museum always say the Close itself is magical, cloaked in invisibility—blink, and you might miss it."
Then on to the historic Greyfriars cemetery, known for its association with the Harry Potter books and its reputation as one of the world's most haunted places. It is famous for the grave of "Bloody" Mackenzie, which is said to be the source of a poltergeist, as well as the grave of Greyfriars Bobby, a dog who guarded his master's tomb for 14 years. It contains a prison area where Covenanters were held, and many died or were later executed. It is also a site of alleged paranormal activity. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the cemetery was a target for body snatchers, leading to the use of "mortsafes" or iron cages to protect coffins. And, it's located next to George Heriot's School, which is believed to have inspired the fictional Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter series.
Then on to The Writers Museum, a light lunch and home for a rest, we have a big night tonight - Samhuinn Fire Festival! 🎃🧙
