We're right next to the Church of St. Margaret of Antioch in Vernazza! This is from our window, the back of the church is about 10 feet from our apartment. They ring every 30 minutes between 7 and 10, and sometimes there's an extra show...

We decided to visit one of the tiny towns in the Cinque Terre this afternoon while the crowds were insane in Vernazza.

We did the easy trail along the ocean...and then the hard trail up to the town. It was quiet and lovely - so interesting to walk the narrow streets and imagine what it's like living up there!

Framura, a small village on the Ligurian coast of Italy, is a hidden gem. With stunning coastline, rich history, and authentic Italian charm, it's perfect for those looking to experience a more authentic side of Italy. Santuario di Nostra Signora di Reggio

We took a very curvy bus ride up into the hills to the sanctuary above Vernazza. The early people that settled here first settled high up in the mountains for protection and farmed on terraces. Each of the Cinque Terre villages has a sanctuary high above that was one of the first things built.

We were the only people there and it was lovely and peaceful. We then wound our way back down on foot to Vernazza. We saw a lot of homes tucked away in the hills, and some cars that we still can't quite figure out how they managed to get there.Baca selengkapnya

Azure Trail to Corniglia

My watch totaled 83 stories on this hike.

The accordion player on the way in to Corniglia was a nice touch, as was the juice bar part way through.

As usual, Éowyn found a stick.

This is the smallest of the 5 towns, and the only one with no access to the sea.

I could spend a few days in each town just exploring every nook and cranny!

Unlike its coastal neighbors, Corniglia is not directly accessible by the sea but can be reached by climbing a series of steps or taking a shuttle bus. This seclusion adds to its quaint allure, as it remains the quietest and least crowded of the Cinque Terre villages. The village's narrow streets, lined with colorful buildings, lead to breathtaking viewpoints that showcase the beauty of the Ligurian coastline. We had to buy another bottle of sciacchetra (shah-kay-TRAH).

Yes, we're gluttons for punishment since you have to pay for a day pass. Sean and I decided to make the trek to Monterosso. This stretch of trail is a uniquely beautiful place.

Dinner in Monterosso

The girls took the train and met us in Monterosso, the biggest of the 5 towns.

The restaurant we ate at (brilliant idea to make burgers with focaccia) is in a building over 600 years old.

We stumbled upon an interesting little church that looks very ominous and is called the Brotherhood of Death and Prayer, but was actually a group that helped widows, orphans, shipwreck survivors, and buried the poor. The interior is a little surreal with all of the skeletons.

Monterosso is a captivating village nestled along the rugged coastline of the Cinque Terre region in Italy. It is the largest and most diverse of the five villages, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and seaside charm. With its sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and colorful beach umbrellas, Monterosso is a popular destination for sunseekers and beach lovers. The village also boasts a charming old town, where narrow streets are lined with traditional shops, delightful restaurants, and inviting gelato stands.
