    Family visit for a start

    Ready for some holidays again: 2 weeks in Alps (probably). We are not sure about the destination yet, but just go with the flow - or better: follow the sun.
    However, there’s no sun nearby on the first day. So off to Lofer to visit Dre and family who spend there holidays in the Alps as well this year. Good times talking and getting entertained by my 1-year-old niece.
    Forgot to take photos though, so only have this one shot taken on the playground of the mountain restaurant.    Lue lisää

    Find the sun

    Rain when we woke up - time to go South and find the sun! Due to the bad weather conditions, we decided to pass Großvenediger and go hiking in the Dolomites first. It was a great decision! The snow line is at about 1400m in the Northern Alps, it’s super cold! However, passing the Felbertauern Tunnel changed everything! Sun on the other side ☀️☀️ and less snow ❄️
    We stopped in sunny Lienz for a coffee, a nice almost Mediterranean style town, and drove to the Tre Cime. We checked into a hotel with a beautiful view of the peaks and went for a Mountainbike ride around the area. Great views everywhere!

    Cima grande is calling

    Project for today: Summiting Cima Grande! We cycled up to Auronzo hut to start our climb. It was freezing cold outside, but 600m of elevation gain and a slope of up to 20% warmed us up.
    Climbing Cima Grande, the highest of the 3 impressive peaks was fun. We tried to avoid the snowy and icy rocks as they were really slippery and dangerous in that kind of terrain. Apart from some chimneys, this worked out most of the time. The summit views were absolutely beautiful! Could have stayed forever, but it got cold and we still had a long and strenuous way down ahead of us. Down was kind of tiring: some climbing, some abseiling, pretty loose rocks in some parts. However, we made it down safe and all in all it was super interesting tour.
    Luckily, our bikes were waiting for us at the hut and we could roll down fast to get to a dinner rich of calories 😉 now planning the next few days…    Lue lisää

    Bday Cabin Party

    It’s Herbert’s birthday and - of course - he wanted to do something fun to celebrate it. In the morning, we stopped in Toblach and discovered the area with the mountain bikes. We cycled to Pragser Wildsee, a beautiful mountain lake. The downside is that it’s easily reachable by car, so unfortunately, there were hundreds of other tourists at the lake.
    We then drove to Hinterbichl from where we cycled up to Johannis Hut, a cosy mountain hut. The way up was super exhausting, 800m of elevation gain, slopes of 20%, all on gravel and with our mountaineering equipment on the backs. However, the landscape totally made up for it.
    Birthday dinner was spaghetti with a couple of beers of course.    Lue lisää

    Crevasse Tango

    After a small breakfast in the hut, we left off to climb Großvenediger. We weren’t sure if it was possible to reach the summit today as after the snowfall a few days back no one had crossed the glacier from this side yet. Luckily, a group of three left the hut before us and made their way through the crevasses all the way to the peak. We only had to follow their line ☺️
    It was freezing cold and windy, but we being at the top of Großvenediger on a sunny day is definitely special. The way down was relatively fast. We stopped at the hut again for a Radler and were happy we could roll down the path on our Mountain bikes. Way better than a 2 hour hike downhill 😉    Lue lisää

    Kaiserschmarrn deluxe

    Today was a mountainbiking day. We followed river Isel up Virgen Valley. It was a beautiful trail with the high mountains covered in snow on both sides, the crystal clear water of the river and no cars anywhere near us. Some parts were a little challenging and required pushing or carrying the bikes.
    Our plan was to cycle up to Clara Hut, but the last few kilometres of the track were closed to bicycles. Luckily, there was another hut right there, so Herbert could enjoy a Kaiserschmarrn with a view.
    On the way back, we took some detours via mountain roads and hiking paths (with more pushing and carrying). Still fun though!    Lue lisää

    Another Mountainbike day today. We saw a pretty exposed hut on top of a ridge yesterday. So this was our destination for today. A really nice but also pretty exhausting and steep ride later, we reached the hut. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and views not the best. But the hut was cosy and food was good.
    Going down was fast, so we decided to climb up the other side of the valley as well before the rain started.    Lue lisää

    City hopping

    Travel day: the weather wasn’t the best, so we decided to change our base again. We drove to Graz where we are going to spend the next few days. On the way, we stopped in Villach and Klagenfurt, walked around the cities for a bit and had a coffee.
    In Graz, we moved into our apartment and went exploring as well. It seems to be a lively city with lots of bars and restaurants among those historical buildings.    Lue lisää

    On top of Schöckl by "Bio-Bike"

    Time to explore the surroundings of Graz. It’s super green and hilly, reminding us of the Bavarian Forest area. We climbed up „Schoeckl“, the nearest mountain. No great views today, but a good ride anyways. There’s lots of pro trails to go down for the locals - but definitely too hard for our skill level. We preferred the easy trail down - more fun and for sure healthier 😉 but how good is it to have lots of trail options in a distance of only a few kilometres?!Lue lisää

    Bad weather programme for my birthday: first, a hike around the city including castle hill overlooking the centre of Graz and Eggenberg castle West of the city centre. Second, Sauna and relaxing. Third, dinner and bar hopping in the colourful Lend quarter.Lue lisää

    Small wall

    Sunshine again on Wednesday: the morning was spent rock climbing in an area just about 6km North of the city centre.
    In the afternoon, we went biking again and explored the Northwest of Graz. Green hills and forrest everywhere, perfect for any type of cycling! There’s also quite a few castles, churches and other ruins on top of the hills.
    We closed the day with a beer in one of the awesome little bars in the Lend quarter. Overall, Graz seems to be a great place to live, especially when you enjoy the outdoors.    Lue lisää

    Unfortunately, the weather forecast was right and it rained most of the day. We changed location again and drove to Lake Millstatt.
    When it stopped raining, we decided to go for a little round on the bikes. Of course, we got pretty wet eventually, as the dry window didn’t last long. Luckily, there’s a sauna in our hotel, so we could warm up after the ride.Lue lisää

    Another rainy day, but not as bad as the weather forecast had indicated. So we rode to Gmünd, a cute middle age village with a castle, small alleys and lots of art shops. We also stopped for coffee in Seebogen and visited Spittal. Happy to have our rain gear as we got soaked 3 or 4 times today. And best to use the sauna again afterwards 😀Lue lisää

    A bit of everything

    No rain on the radar for today, so we opted for a route to Millstatt Hut which is located at about 1900m. Less than an hour later, we had to put on our rain gear again and got pretty wet. We almost turned around when the sun came out for a few minutes and we decided to continue to climb up the mountains. The road was blocked a couple of times because of landslides, but with the bikes we could pass both times. All in all, it was a challenging but also really nice route even though we could only catch a few glimpses of the surroundings due to the clouds. Luckily, food on the hut was super yummy.Lue lisää
