      Auf den Spuren der Tempelritter

      Nach Meer und Wellen war wieder einmal Geschichte und Kultur angesagt.
      Gestern war Tomar unser Ziel, eine der Gründungsstätten der Tempelritter. Das „Convento de Cristo“ ist recht imposant und man hat einen wunderbaren Ausblick über die Stadt und die Umgebung. Leider ist die Anlage ziemlich verwildert, bzw. ungepflegt.
      Der Stellplatz der Gemeinde, ein ehemaliger Campingplatz, ist kostenfrei.
      Thomas nannte das Areal „Tschernobyl“: In der aufgelassenen Rezeption steht ein ca. 20 Jahre alter Bildschirm 📺, die Mülltonnen sind mehr als überfüllt, die Beleuchtungen entlang der Wege funktionieren bestimmt seit Jahren nicht mehr und das Gras/Stroh ist ausgetrocknet. Aber wir standen ja nur eine Nacht, es war ruhig und die Innenstadt vom Platz aus fußläufig zu erreichen.      Read more

      Wenn ihr so nahe seid, dann wäre Alcobaça wirklich zu empfehlen. Schöner Stellplatz (ehemaliger Camping, kostenfrei), imposante und gepflegte Klosteranlage. Wir fanden's sympathisch und genossen die Musik in der Gasse. Ist übrigens schön und speziell, mit euch nochmals virtuell durch Portugal zu reisen. Schöne Grüße, Christoph

      Danke für den Tip. 😊 Wir haben nach Coimbra noch keinen fixen Plan wie wir schön langsam in Richtung Heimat fahren (Termine ab 16.07.😏) Aber nach dem 15.08. geht’s ja nochmals auf die Iberische Halbinsel … 🥳🤩

      Na schön, wir werden Anfang September via Südfrankreich und Galizien auch nochmals die iberische Halbinsel ansteuern (um dann für den Winter nach Marokko zu wechseln). Dann ergibt sich ja mitunter nochmals ne Begegnungs-Chance. Gute Reise weiterhin.

      Das könnte leicht sein und wär wirklich nett! Wir werden auch über Galicien bis zur Algarve zuckeln und wollen uns doch auch intensiver mit dem Surfen und Bodyboarding beschäftigen. Vielleicht mal bis zum Herbst? 😊

      Vila Nova da Barquinha to Tomar 23 km

      The big news today is that I met two Dutch women towards the beginning of the day that I walked with. Unfortunately, they are going to Fatima tomorrow and not continuing on the Camino.

      The first half of the day we walked through eucalyptus forests with a few big hills.

      However, the second half was not so nice and scenic. The Camino was mostly along a road with no shade, and the temperature was around 80° while we were walking. I felt a little guilty walking under the shade of my umbrella while Héleen and Yolanda had the sun beating down on them.

      As we approached Tomar we could see the castle built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century which overlooks the city.

      Unfortunately I was too tired to go up there while the Convento de Cristo which is within the castle was still open for the day.

      But later I took a tuk tuk ride up the hill, and had a nice walk back, discovering a beautiful formal garden along the way.      Read more

      Tomar to Cortiça 26.2 km

      Back to walking solo.

      I got an early start at 6:00 to beat the heat.

      Today's walk went through eucalyptus and cork forests with a few big climbs. Fortunately most of the climbing was in the shady areas.
      I arrived at the lovely Quinta da Cortiça albergue at 1:00, and discovered that they have a swimming pool! So the first order of business was to take a cooling dip. Then I washed my clothes and took a short nap.

      This place is kind of in the middle of nowhere, so a good spot to just rest and relax.

      According to the weather forecast the heat is supposed to break tomorrow, I hope it's correct, as I have an almost 30 km walk tomorrow.      Read more

      Tomar und seine Tempelritter

      ...richtig schön getrödelt hatten wir heute Morgen...

      ...nachdem wir dann ein Lauch-Käse-Hack-Süppchen für heute Abend vorbereitet und ein lecker Brot gebacken hatten, begaben wir uns auf zur Besichtigung der großen Festung.

      Der Weg dorthin gestaltete sich sehr kurzweilig...man spaziert gemächlich an einem Flüsschen durch einen schönen Park. Kommt dann relativ schnell an die kleine Altstadt von Tomar. Dort wurde der Fluss schon früher umgeleitet um ein Wasserkraftwerk anzutreiben. Das alles kostenlos in einem eigens angelegten Museum zu bestaunen.

      Danach gelangte man nach kurzem Gang durch die kleine Einkaufsstraße an den Fuß des Festungshügels. Ein steiler, alter Weg brachte uns zum Eingang, des zum Unesco-Weltkulturerbes gehörenden, Convento de Cristo.

      Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Kombination aus Burg und Kirche der Tempelritter (1118-1312)

      Wir verbrachten eine gute Stunde und schritten die gleichen Mauer und Wehrgänge wie die alten Ritter ab...immer wieder ein sehr intensives Gefühl

      Anschließend flanierten wir noch etwas durch die Altstadt und sogen die ruhige und friedliche Stimmung auf, um uns dann unser Süppchen munden zu lassen 😉

      Ein gemütlicher Tag in Tomar

      Der Stellplatz in Tomar ist schon der Knaller. Das ist ein ehemaliger Campingplatz,, der nun als kostenfreier Stellplatz genutzt werden darf. Jeder sucht sich auf diesem parkähnlichen Platz seinen Stellplatz aus wie er mag. Strom gibt es nicht, Ver- und Entsorgung ist aber auch wieder kostenlos. Und das quasi mitten in der Stadt. Wir finden es jedenfalls toll und verbringen daher gerne eine weitere Nacht hier.
      Vormittags gehen wir gemütlich durch die kleine Templerstadt spazieren und finden dabei viele tolle Fotomotive. Ich persönlich habe es ja nicht so mit Museen. Aber in Tomar gibt es ein ganz besonderes Unikat, das Streichholzschachtelmuseum. Was für ein Wort, was für ein Museum. Aus der ganzen Welt wurden hier Streichholzschachteln zusammengetragen!       Aveiro et Tomar

      Routine habituelle, on part de Coimbra vers 10h00. Maintenant direction Aveiro, le Venise du Portugal. C'est une ville située sur la côte ouest du Portugal, au bord d'un lagon nommé Ria de Aveiro. "Cette ville se caractérise par ses canaux sur lesquels naviguent des barques colorées (barcos moliceiros), traditionnellement utilisées pour la récolte d'algues." Nous en profitons pour faire un tour et le guide nous montre l'eau dans un bidon qui est effectivement transparente. C'est donc les algues au fond du canal qui donne la couleur verte de l'eau. De plus, dans la ville, non loin du centre se dresse la cathédrale d'Aveiro, ornée d'un imposant clocher. C'est une belle ville, mais je m'étais tellement fait vanter la beauté que je suis un peu déçu malheureusement.

      Vu les circonstances, on se dit qu'on peut se rendre à l'autre ville mise sur l'itinéraire : Tomar. Bon, là nous avons été conquis. Une magnifique ville près d'une grande rivière où plusieurs ponts anciens nous amènent de l'autre côté de la rive. C'est vraiment beau! On marche dans cette splendide ville où beaucoup d'art et de culture y sont significatifs. Un ancien camping y est aménagé pour les campervan, parfait pour nous cette nuit. Pas compliqué de même, on aime ça !! :)      Read more

      Templar Castle and Convent of Christ

      This is, for me, the main attraction in Tomar. The castle/monastery was founded in the early 12th century by the Order of the Poor Knights of the Temple, the Knights Templar. In the 13th century, Tomar became the seat or main headquarters of the entire order.
      When the Knights Templar Order was dissolved in the middle of the 14th century and at the urging of the king of Portugal, a new order, the Order of Christ, was proclaimed by the Pope. In Portugal, the members and assets of the Templars were transfered to the new order. The Templar fortress became the Convent of Christ and headquarters of the new order.
      This is an incredibly spectacular space, so much so that it has been the setting for many movies. In fact, filming was in progress during my visit. So significant parts of the convent were closed. Oh well.
      The 1st picture is the main gate. The next 5 pictures are various cloisters scattered throughout the convent. I don't think I've ever seen a monastery with more than one cloister. Here are 5, and others were in the closed section. The 2nd picture catches a corner of the church (see another post) above th cloister. The 3rd picture is the hospitality cloister for pilgrims, clergy, traveling brothers, etc. Social standing determined which floor one was lodged. Higher standing, higher floor.
      The 7th picture is the church (see another post), and the 8th picture is the ornate Manueline window. This open into the chapter house (closed). The Manueline decorations, named for King Manuel I, celebrate the age of discovery.

      Gisteren zijn we aangekomen in Tomar! Op een prachtige gemeente camperplaats met alle voorzieningen! Het is hier overdag rond 37 graden en deze parkachtige camperplaats staat vol bomen, het is dus goed uit te houden. Tomar is een heelmooi plaatsje met kasteel en een mooi oud centrum!Read more

      Day 6: Golega to Tomar

      The walk from Golega to Tomar was another long 30+ kilometre trek in 30+ sunny weather with nary a cloud in the sky.

      We started gently to ensure any potential sore spots didn't develop into something full blown that would quash our Camino. The first third of the walk went by pleasantly and we enjoyed the relative coolness of the morning. The second third took us through a eucalyptus forest that offered dappled shading and some good climbs. We then slogged through the last third on mainly open roads that mercilessly offered no shade.

      We were so happy to arrive in Tomar, and even happier knowing we were going to take a rest day tomorrow.

      We felt a great sense of accomplishment having accomplished 2 long days in a row under such heat, but we agreed that we would do our best to avoid 30+ kilometre days going forward.

      Tomar

      Tomar is a small town in central Portugal that has an outsized historical footprint. This is where the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal was located (see additional posts). This post looks at the town itself.
      When the Romans were here, this was called Sellium. After the expulsion of the Moors in the 12th century, the site was granted to the Templars who became the feudal lords. The town developed, 1st within the walls and later expanded outside the fortress walls. Today the old town is located around the foot of the hill upon which the fortress is built. The newer town is beyond the old town.
      The 1st picture is the view from my room. That is the castle and convent on the hill. The 2nd picture is the church of St. Mary of Olival that dates to at least the 12th century, though the current building is a 13th century renovation. Many Templars are buried here.
      The 3rd picture clearly demonstrates the importance of the Templars to Tomar. That's a city sidewalk with Templar crosses everywhere. The 4th picture is s city park with a waterwheel designed to lift water, probably originally for irrigation. The 5th picture is a view over the town from the castle. The 6th picture is a formal garden in a park at the foot of the castle hill. The 7th picture is in the best preserved medieval synagogue is Portugal. It dates to the middle of the 15th century. You can see the Torah in the ark.
      The 8th picture is the main square, Republic Square. The stature is the 1st grand master of the Portuguese Templars, Gualdim de Pais. The 9th picture is a typical street in the old town.
      The 10th picture is part of the Camino de Santiago, the famous pilgrimage path. The Portuguese route passes through the castle and convent.      Read more
