"Discover an abandoned open pit iron mine that supplied iron ore pellets to Bethlehem Steel Mills in New York, from 1955 to 1979. Discover the history of this site, which once employed some 300 men who worked to fill 30 to 35 railway cars with iron ore each day. Wonder at the natural beauty that has taken over this once industrial land, with underground streams and rainfall filling the pit with water since its closing in 1979, and the unusual geology of the region adding a unique hue. Imagine what once was -an open pit mine that, when blasted out, measured approximately 1700 feet by 1200 feet, reaching 600 feet deep -as you gaze upon this present-day lake."

Fort Henry National Historic Site
August 24, 2022 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C
"Fort Henry National Historic Site is a 19th-century British military fortress situated on Point Henry between the mouth of Kingston harbour and a second natural harbour at the mouth of the Cataraqui River. It sits high on a natural cliff facing the confluence of the eastern end of Lake Ontario with the beginning of the St. Lawrence River. The designation refers to the fort, its redoubt, advanced battery, the former ''dead zone'' to the north and east, and the associated cultural resources found thereon."

An inter-related defense system, the concentration and orientation of the limestone fortifications towards the water convey their essential purpose as a defensible platform for guns. Built between 1832 and 1848, the Kingston fortifications represent the apogee of smooth bore technology. Official recognition refers to the boundaries of each of these installations situated around the Kingston Harbour. "

Smiths Falls - Railway Museum of Eastern

Adults: $10
Dwayne is always asking 'what's on the agenda today?' while I am still working on my first cup of coffee and incoherent. Some days we don't get much done, unless we stumble upon it while we're out, since I usually answer him with 'groceries', 'walmart', 'laundry', etc.
Since we had been in Smiths Falls almost a week already, and not yet been to the museums, thrift stores, or Canadian Tire, I decided to write a list of stuff I wanted to do in town on the whiteboard, so we could make plans even when I'm half asleep, and scratch things off as we finish with them. Much better than trying to remember what's available at each stop.
So it was that Dwayne called the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario early in the morning to book us a tour. Reservations are required, with maximum capacity of 10. We were booked for the 11am tour, and planned to hit a nearby thrift store afterward.
The tour was fun, 3 families, so we each took our turns walking through the exhibits we were allowed to enter, and peaking through windows of the ones we weren't. Our tour guide was very informative, with a loud, booming voice, even with his mask on. It took about an hour, and Dwayne stayed through the whole thing. He likes trains. It was a great experience, and I'd highly recommend it.Read more

We spent an afternoon exploring the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge. It crosses over the river into Ferris Provincial Park.
The bridge itself is pretty cool, built out of cement and lots of steel. I didn't take any pics of it up close, but looking through the open slats in the floor was a bit eerie. People have been hanging locks on it, like they do in France, which is kind of cool, since there aren't that many. I'd hate to see it become a danger to itself and others though.

We scooted up the trails to a couple of look out points. The paths were steep and muddy from the rain, so Pete and Julia went out to explore the falls on their own, leaving us old folks to sit and rest.
It's a beautiful spot, and well worth the visit.Read more
