• Cerro Alux & Dry Forest

    February 19 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After a fantastic breakfast at the Tikal Futura we headed up to higher elevations for our last bird watching outing of the main tour. Just outside the city lies Cerro Alux, one more chance to catch up with high elevation species that have eluded us. Nevertheless the Blue-and-white Mockingbird did what it does best. Mock us with his melodic calls without showing even a glimpse of himself. We did add two new trip birds to the list though,… Yellowish Flycatcher and Hutton’s Vireo.

Then it was time to hit Guatemalas traffic one more time in order to get back to the Hotel for our last lunch together. And just like that, the main tour came to an end and it was time to say goodbye to bye. What a wonderful experience it has been touring through the diverse environments of Guatemala with such a huge diversity of wildlife. A huge thank you to all of the participants for being such a wonderful and united group. We had the most incredible time guiding you through the country and enjoying the birds of Guatemala with you.

For a small group of us the excitement wasn’t over yet, and we set off towards the central highlands for the Quetzal extension.

Having seen the Quetzal already, we made a stop on the tropical dry forest of Guatemala in search of some additional species that would usually not be possible on this trip. Sure enough we had fantastic looks at the beautiful Varied Bunting and Stripe-headed Sparrows and even a Russet-crowned Motmot before reaching our destination for the day.
