After a relaxing night in Huehuetenango we left the hotel towards the airport. A 40 minute flight later, we landed in Guatemala City and set out immediately towards Finca El Amate, south of Pacaya Volcano. This is the prime location to see the recently split Spot-bellied Bobwhite. We arrived late in the morning which could have been a major problem to find the Bobwhites. While waiting for someone to come and open the gate for us, we got out of the car and gave it a first listen. To our surprise, a Bobwhite responded just around the corner. So we went around the gate and approached the area we heard the response coming from. After whistling back and forth with the Bobwhites for a while we saw our first one run along the hillside. Another three started to answer and a little while later a beautiful male hopped up on a rock and gave us fantastic views. That was #6 of 7 in the bag and we couldn’t have been happier. We birded the surrounding area for a while and enjoyed the large numbers of Orioles, Rufous-backed Wrens and the Centralamerican subspecies of Rockwren before returning to the city and facing the Guatemalan traffic one last time.Leia mais
