    Mystery Coast, a controlled/restricted area—but just during bad weather I think. And for dinner? Fresh, locally-caught Wanli Crab—I saw the round crabbing cages just outside by the harbor!

  • Jiufen—Spirited Away

    The town of Jiufen, with its hundred-year-old teahouse, winding stone streets, delicious local foods, and countless lanterns, was a major inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s film Spirited Away. Two Jiufen specialties that I tried were taro balls (a springy dessert made from taro, sweet potato, and water) and red vinasse meatballs (a translucent Taiwanese dumpling).Read more

  • Bukchon Hanok Village

    A village consisting of restored homes (hanok) dating from the 14th century. It is popular for women to wear a hanbok (traditional Korean dress) during their visit.

  • Wongaksa Pagoda

    An unusual 10-story marble pagoda from the mid-1400s encased in a giant glass box. The carvings are exquisite and one of the best examples of art from the Josean dynasty. It’s hard to tell scale from the photo, but the pagoda is about 40 feet tall.Read more

  • Changdeokgung Palace and Secret Garden

    The prince Hyomyeong, who wanted to be just like his grandfather, would study all day. Hyomyeong would go through the red gate at the top of the hill to reach the back of the library before returning to Uiduhap Pavillion (built in 1827) to read. He died at the age of 22 of unknown cause.Read more

    After going pretty far on what turned out to be the wrong bus, I got off near an elementary school and explored the coastline, which had some beautiful swaths of green in the water.

  • Yongmeori Coast

    There is a story about the formation of Yongmeori Coast. Emperor Qin felt insecure about his kingdom and was worried about the birth of a new emperor. So, Gojongdal (his legman) cut the tail off a dragon and stabbed it twice in the gut before finally cutting off its head. Blood gushed from the blow, turning Yongmeori into what it is now (Yongmeori is in the shape of a dragon half-submerged into the sea).Read more

    Olle are walks marked by ribbons that weave along the coast. Forming a web that encircles the island, the olle go through villages, temples, and countrysides. And you can meet friendly locals!

    Manjanggul, which runs 7.4 km out to sea, is one of the longest and best-preserved lava tubes in the world. Formed about 300,000 years ago by lava moving beneath the hardened flow of Geomunoreum volcano, Manjanggul also contains an incredibly large, rare lava column as well as a diverse community of cave biota.Read more
