    Kinchega shearing shed

Back to Kinchega NP today. This time, we visited the heritage shearing shed. I love the smell of lanolin that is impregnated into the timbers of these old buildings. This has to be the most impressive one we have visited over the years. The raised undercover holding pens were something we had not come across before.
Is blowing a gale today. You wouldn't believe how windy it is looking at the photos.

    Olary

Crossed into SA today. Pulled in the camp in the tiny town of Olary.
The rail line is on one side and an old pub just across the road. That about sums up the town.

    Peterborough

Free camping again last night. There is a great RV park just on the outskirts of town. We stopped here on our way home from Uluru just after covid. Have passed through Peterborough many times. It is rich in rail history.

1° here this morning... was just a bit chilly overnight 🥶. An invigorating stroll this morning was rewarded with some nice tree photos around the camp site.

    Parachilna Gorge

It's a beautiful evening here. The best we have had for a few days.

Started the day with trees at Peterborough ending the day with more trees. Plus a magpie and youngster.

    Will do some exploring tomorrow.
Love this part of SA. We have travelled through parts of the Flinders Ranges on a few occasions. First time here.

    Blinman

While exploring the Parachilna Gorge area, we drive to Blinman. An interesting old mining town. On arriving, we realised we had been here on our first trip to SA around 12 years ago.
It has a number of interesting buildings. Plus a great cafe. The first time, if I remember correctly, I had a roo wrap. It's under new owners now. We had devine sausage rolls. Made on the premises. Plus, Giant Twin ice cream, made in SA. We became a little addicted to these on our Uluru trip. A perfect reason to visit SA.

    Marree

We have made it to our first major tourist stop for this trip.
We will finally be seeing Lake Eyre for the first time tomorrow. We are so excited to be doing a flight over tomorrow.
We have been to Marree a few years ago. We travel out to Birdsville, then down the Birdsvilles Track to Marree.
As you can see from the photo, Marree was a stop on the original Ghan railway.

    Flying over Lake Eyre

Today, we were so lucky to be able to fly over Lake Eyre. Photos don't do just to the beauty of this area.
To think that the waters have found their ways here from the flooding in NW Queensland earlier this year.
    A very special day.

Level Post Bay - Lake Eyre

Braved a hot, windy day to travel out to Level Post Bay today. It's still in the mid-30s here, almost sunset.
Was a great drive along the salt plains of South Lake Eyre. The water hasn't flowed through to it as of yet.
Was well worth the 100k round trip drive to explore this part of the country. The only wildlife spotted was one frill neck lizard on the road.

    Farina Historical Town

Tonight we are camped at Farina south of Marree.
It is a fascinating historical town. It is slowly being restored over the winter months by a group of very keen volunteers. They have the old underground bakery up and running during the restoration season. Sadly, we missed sampling their delights.
There is also a very moving war memorial, for those that served from the area.

    Info from Wikicamps...
Originally called The Gums or Government Gums,[12] Farina was settled in 1878 by optimistic farmers hoping that rain follows the plough.[13] The town became a railhead in 1882, but the railway was extended to Marree in 1884. During the wet years of the 1880s, plans were laid out for a town with 432 quarter-acre (0.10 hectares) blocks. It was believed that the area would be good for growing wheat and barley, but normal rainfall proved to be nowhere near enough for that. Several silver and copper mines were opened in the surrounding area.

Farina grew to reach a peak population of about 600 in the late 19th century. In its heyday, the town had two hotels (the Transcontinental and the Exchange), an underground bakery, a bank, two breweries, a general store, an Anglican church, five blacksmiths, a school (1879–1957) and a brothel.[11][citation needed] In 1909, a 1,143-kilogram (2,520 lb) iron meteorite was discovered north-east of the town.[14]

A wet stop here... but it is lovely to see the area looking so lush and green.
Free camping just a few minutes out of town. A property that a generous local has open for campers to use.
There are so many beautiful old stone buildings in the area. Plus, magnetic hill where your car rolls up the hill.
Not forgetting the local butcher. Drop in for a chat and excellent meat if you are in town.

    Burra

Freezing cold today. We have become very soft. Camping tonight in the Burra Showgrounds so we could have power. Currently have the AC running on warm.
Sorry, there are no photos. We did duck into the butchers for a nice local lamb roast for dinner.
We were here 12 years ago. Was melting hot. It is a wonderful town to visit, with lots of interesting things to check out. They were filming Wolf Creek 2 during our last stay.
Baking Graham a date loaf while we have power.

Our last stop on our day exploring the area was the shearing shed.
This was a working shed up to 2005. In the day of the paddle steamers, wool bales were picked up from the Murrumbidgee River that runs past the shed.

There is also an old shearing shed that was moved there... that make 3 shearing sheds this trip. 🐏🐑🐏.
