  • Pontevedra!

    July 3, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

After 12 miles of walking we arrived in Pontevedra at Nacama Hostel. A nice number of miles, especially considering the hills. Our feet are definitely complaining these days by the time we arrive! So what do we do? Walk around town for another 4 miles! 🫣🤣 We ate lunch so late that dinner is going to be snacks we got from the grocery store!Read more

  • Passing through Poio

    July 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Today will probably be our shortest walk of the Camino. I slept in until after 7am! Luxury! 😄 Today we crossed over onto the Spiritual Variant and, for the very first time, we missed the turn!! Luckily, we recognized the error not too far down the trail! The error was due to multiple distractions at the turn off and the marker for the Spiritual Way being much more discreet! I expected much more fanfare! Stopping for lunch here in Poio… not even 2 miles from our destination of Combarro. We ordered burgers and got ham and tuna sandwiches! 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️
    Whatcha gonna do? 😆

  • Combarro!

    July 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Our Alburgue, Nuestra Señora del Camino is 23 euros a bed and is so nice! Clean, well thought out, comfortable, everything we need! We have had such good places this whole trip! The town of Combarro is a very quaint village with a marina. The old-town portion is reminiscent of Cinque Terra with its many stairs, flowered porches and restaurants right on the water. Portugal and Spain’s food portions are SO big! I can hardly ever finish!! I ordered a Spanish omelette for dinner and it was like deep dish and the size of my plate! Andrea had the sardines! 😳🫢 You may have noticed small rectangular buildings on tall pedestals, often with crosses on top… those structures were for the storage of grain and other food items to be kept dry and away from rodents!Read more

  • Arrived in Armenteira

    July 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

It was another day of climbing (approx 1500ft elevation). Come to think of it, there really isn’t a day on the Camino where we are not climbing! We woke up to cloudy skies… a first on our trip! I’m not mad! The cool air is a nice change. We mostly walked along forest roads and paths with wonderful smelling minty green eucalyptus bushes. Our first stop, as is a lot of pilgrims, in Armenteira is a cafe. I ordered a coffee with cake… once again ginormous portion! 😳🤣Read more

    July 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Blink and you would miss this place! Probably only on the map because of the early 14th century monastery that is prominent against the country fields backdrop! Two places to eat and only one albergue! We were glad to have called ahead to reserve our beds two days ago, because it is completely full! It’s our least expensive stay at 10 euros and most basic so far. We attended a “pilgrims blessing service” at the monastery, which was primarily nuns singing scripture and a prayer said over the pilgrims in several languages. Then we ate dinner with 5 other pilgrims we just met! It is so interesting to learn of everyone’s homes, lives, goals, etc!Read more

  • The way of stone and water!

    July 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Ruta de la piedra y del agua! A beautiful beginning to our long walk today! The path takes you along a creek with numerous ruins of old mills! Loved it 😍!

  • Vilanova de Arousa!

    July 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Todays walk started off magical, became beautiful, then familiar, then long, then trying and finally “when are we getting there already my feet are killing me!” 🥴 After 17 miles we were praying the albergue had beds for us! I wish I could say the Albergue De Peregrinos is nice. It has 28 beds crammed in a room above a school gym. The beds and showers get the job done but are a bit sketch on the cleanliness grade. The beaches and water here look rather amazing, but I don’t have energy to explore! After my shower, I’m laying here with a soothing foot mask on, hoping dinner won’t be a long walk, while Andrea (ambitious girl) searches out a beach to relax on!!Read more

  • Boat to Pontecesures!

    July 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

The first part of our day was a boat ride to Pontecesures! Very glad to have my coat! It was cloudy this morning and especially cold with the breeze! It was short walk to Padron where we had lunch with Sabina (young pilgrim from Czech Republic). It’s a pretty late start to walking compared to our normal routine, but we have a reservation for tonight, so no rush!Read more

  • O Milladoiro!

    July 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 70 °F

We have arrived at the Albergue Milladoiro, which is SO much better than last nights stay and only 6 euros more! We have decided to stop just short of Santiago De Compostela today. We are less than 3 miles away, which will be an easy walk tomorrow morning and we can beat the lines and crowds of pilgrims that arrive a bit later! As you can see the sun has come out once again! It’s supposed to rain tonight, but no need for ponchos, yet!Read more

  • Santiago De Compostella!

    July 8, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Woke up to rain! So, for the first time, we broke out our ponchos and pack rain covers! By the time we left, though, it was barely misting! So I skipped the poncho and just used my pack cover! It was about 5 miles to the cathedral! We made it!Read more

  • Back to our albergue!

    July 8, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We wandered the streets for a bit around the cathedral, but we are SO tired! After around 225 miles of walking and often uphill…the legs and feet complain constantly! 🤣 We attended mass at the cathedral, thinking we would sit, but they kept having us stand for long portions! Our Irish friend, McDarra, finished his Camino just about 5 hours after us, so we met up for lunch… and more sitting and watching the many pilgrims arriving! Not long after that we agreed we are lacking energy for sightseeing, so we took a taxi back to our albergue in Milladoiro for a nice evening of R&R.Read more

  • Bus to Fisterra

    July 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

I can’t believe it’s my last day in Spain already! Today was a busy and yet relaxing day! We booked a tour bus to Fisterra (aka: the end of the world). Our friend McDarra decided to book the tour, as well! I have to say it was fabulous to see so many things and places and not have had to walk to them all! 😆 It was a comfortable coach with foot rests and airconditioning! The tour made stops in Fisterra, Muxía, Ezaro, Ría de Muros, Pontemaceira & Costa da Morte!Read more

  • More Bus Tour!

    July 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

There were to many beautiful things to see to put it all in just one post… so here’s more!

  • Wait there’s more!

    July 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

Here’s some last pics of the bus tour. At times the sky looked like it would rain on us, but we stayed dry and the day was beautiful! Also our place for tonight in Santiago, The Last Stamp Albergue! And, of course my shoes! They took me over 200 miles and held up well! I forgot them at breakfast today, but when we came back to the cafe this evening, they were there waiting for me!Read more

  • Yesterdays travels

    July 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

It’s time to head home. It simultaneously feels like it’s been forever and yet the quickest trip ever!Yesterday, we took the bus from Santiago to Porto (wound up accidentally booking separate buses 30 min. apart). Andrea then took a flight to Lisbon at 4pm! I waved goodbye not know when and where the adventure of non-rev would take me this time! The first flight available for me to standby for was TAP to New York at 6:05p with one seat open. Unbelievably, I got on AND got a preferred window seat! No flights left for Seattle by the time I arrived, so I headed to a hotel. That king bed sure felt luxurious after so many bunk bed nights!Read more

  • Short night in New York!

    July 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

After about 5 hours rest in my phenomenal king sized hotel bed, it’s back to the airport! The first Alaska flight I tried for was oversold, but thankfully I can jumpseat on my airline! It’s not comfy, but I’m on the plane and headed home, so no complaints!Read more
